I changed the oil every 3000 on my 1998 Saturn SL. I got 455,000 miles before I sent it to the salvage yard. It still ran great but leaked a bit and started smoking a bit. A clutch and front struts but nothing other than routine maintenance. I absolutely loved that car. I have a 1999 in the driveway that replaced it. Unfortunately the former owner was not good with the oil changes. Still changing every 1200 miles but burns a bit...no smoke. I'm mid 50s. Might be the last car I own. BTW, I've owned five Saturn SLs, all 1998 or 1999s. A big thanks to the men and women of Saturn. Those cars were very good to me. Nearly zero problems, rock solid and good on gas.
My 2002 has 223,000 and its still going. Its had oil changes, 4 sets of plugs, 4 sets of plug wires, 1 coil pack, 1 water pump, 1 TPS and 1 IAC valve, 2 quick struts and a couple serpentine belts, other than that....LOTS of brake pads and rotors. Heck...it still has the factory AC charge blowing Ice cold air! Very low overall cost of ownership.
I love this car so much - I have a 98 SL2 and it’s the best car I’ve ever had, if you take care of it, it will take care of you! Thank you for posting this, great video. I wish they never went out of business too.
My hats off to you for taking the time and making this video to share your findings. Interesting factoids, and enjoyable to watch/listen. I feel these great little cars were generally underappreciated but after owning several I can attest to their reliability, durability, value and simplicity. I bought at least one of these for all my kids as their first cars and never had any major problems with them ever. I've owned many far more expensive performance-oriented cars (still do) but for some reason, I always find myself picking up another one of these now and again when I find them listed locally. Good, low mileage ones are getting pretty scarce. After watching this I think I'll keep this last one I just picked up and see if I can run it to 300K miles too, lol. Thanks !!!
My '02 that I bought in '08 still runs great at 227K, has had no internal parts replaced (not even the timing chain) and I'm still running the original clutch! I did replace the 5th gear and driven gear with the SL1 parts to decrease revs per mile. And I use full synthetic oil and change it every 5K.
Those are good engines, still got a 95 Sl2 as well with a ported intake and bigger throttle body, CAI, a 1991-92 factory header, replaced the rubber bushings with full polyurethane bushings, H&R sport springs, lowered about 1.5 inches, and KYB's, stiffer than stock and a Seibon carbon fiber hood and about 50 Lbs of weight reduction overall. Also replaced the worn out steering wheel with a Momo Gotham steering wheel. Nice car, was my dad's originally, got the car at 135,000 miles and he said you might get a couple years out of the car, that was 15 years ago and now it's at 236,000 miles and still runs terrific with great gas mileage! When I did the polyurethane bushings I even slightly gained some bottom end from increased traction, great car.
I have a 2001 Sl1, and it has almost 300,000 miles on it and i took apart the engine and it looked like it just came out of the factory brand new like you said. I've had this car my whole life and I'm thinking about restoring it and turning it into a luxury car.
236,000 for my 95 Sl2, not junk engines. Wish I could find one close to my though with the 5 speed but at the video I commented on the mods I did. Much quicker than stock, beat a 2014 Honda V6 with it once, and the guy got pissed and turned the corner at the next light really fast...lol Still runs like new almost..lol
That's well over ONE BILLION revolutions that engine made, it's gone more than twice as far as a typical Mercedes. Mine went 208,000 on the first engine, now thinkin of rebuilding it and putting it back in. The S Series was the only original platform, don't thing the others were quite this durable. Thanks for posting the video, good job.
Awesome video! Love the info you shared. My hunter green 96 SL2 is still getting 40mpg in East TN with plenty of power to get me up over Clinch Mtn on 25E. 😂 Looking forward to breaking 300,000 miles by the time she turns THIRTY!
I'm the second owner of and SW1 (1998), it has 228k miles, other than an engine mount, clutch, and oil burn fix needed, the thing runs great. 40mpg freeway at 70. Pretty sure the clutch is alright but the pressure plate is worn out. I've done EGR, clutch master/slave, ECTS, rad, new thermostat, plugs and wires. I'm in this car maybe $650.
Got a 95 Sl2 also, 236,000 miles the comment i did a comment at the video describes the mods I did and still runs terrific. Even got the last factory door panels and one door cup under the interior handle, and factory outer door handles and mechanism as well from vintage parts, gave me a great deal on all of them. Was so lucky they had my color too, gonna do em when the window motor on the passenger side goes cause the outer door skins gotta come off to do the motors anyway, haven't got around to it.
I have a 1999 SL2 DOHC. I appreciate you sharing this video. I thought this car was special. I still see a good few of em on the road looking good and running just fine. Mine had 2 owners prior to me.
@3:35 How heavy is that Cylinder Head? ~150K on our Saturn and I think to replace the Piston Rings on its engine. Saturn (we have 2001 Saturn SL2) consumes some oil between changes. Thank you for a great film.
While the bearings may look good, that crank has to have some out of round to it. I would check the crank for out of round before putting new bearnings on it.
I'm about to buy one of these off an old teacher of mine (auto tech school) with 300,000 miles for $200. Fingers crossed that it lasts me a year. I plan to do some fun stuff with it.
I have a 99 sl2 that has 100,500 miles on it has a miss on cylinder three and now 2 and 3 cause the dealer didn’t detail it so I didn’t she had a blown head gasket she has a bad knock on cylinder three I think the coolant mixed with the oil after I added it and had at the bore or the wrist pin thank you for your video just goes to show that my $400 car was worth the buy I’m getting a junk yard motor same year and less miles for her and Imma maintain her accordingly
I have a 98 SC2 we bought it brand new, it also has 333300 miles on it with same clutch! It has been religiously taken care of up to now and ran like it was new. I went out to start it yesterday it started ran for 2 seconds and quit I turned it over, no start but could hear the unusual sound it made. I have experience with Ecotec engines and recognized the timing chain sound. The dealer replaced the chain at about 180000 miles when Saturn was still in business. I pulled to plugs and ran compression test 60, 60 ,150, 60# they did not hold that compression the gauge but could be leaking by the gauge itself... I hope. The Question I have, do you think the valves were affected by turning it over after the timing chain went out? I am hoping I can just change timing chain and not have to deal with a head rebuild. I have not removed the cover yet to check timing marks or condition of the chain.
It's very rare for the chain to do that on start up, the 1.9 dohc can have an issue where when started cold the lifters can hold the valves open. I'd remove the valve cover and confirm it's the chain. If it's in time, you can spin it over at 3/4 throttle until it cranks
I had a 1993 Saturn SL2 for 11 yrs from 2003-2014 with over 300,000 miles (got it with over 100,000) and it would start burning Castrol GTX at 3000 miles just to let me know it needed changed. I flushed the coolant at every 75000, changed the clutch at 180,000 but I didn't take care of the subframe to engine cradle and it eventually rotted out because of the sunroof
What do you recommend on oil change intervals? I am running Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w30. What could cause the burned valve on the engine in your video?
Hey Robert, I'm a fan of conventional oil on the 1.9 to be honest. Many people including engineers argue with me, but for me the 1.9 seems to burn through the synthetic way faster and has absolutely shown that in oil consumption test that I've done over many years. Burned exhaust valves usually happen from chunks of carbon hanging them open too long during the combustion process and normal wear and tear.
@@PSBEadventures Thank you for the reply. You might be right. I just switched to Pennzoil Ultima platinum, but all of the sudden i notice oil consumption.
233k on my 01 sl2 but she's tired. Lots of blow by. previous owner didn't do oil changes every 3k. just put a valve body out of a parts car i have. i think i'll get one more year out of it then park it.
I also have an '01 SL2 (built 9/5/2000 according to the VIN) and mine just rolled over 234K yesterday. Still going strong except for the transmission which started shifting hard around 80K, and now shifts like an old 18-wheeler. But I also have an '04 Impala with 167K that does the same thing. So it's a GM transmission problem, not just a Saturn thing. The oil consumption is real; roughly one quart every 500-1000 miles. But then my Impala had some sort of problem between a bad oil pan gasket and a bad sending unit that ultimately led to spun bearings and a Jasper engine at 148K. Right before that point, I'd often be adding a whole quart or two at a time. So again, not just a Saturn thing. My SL2 was my very first car; at 19 I spent all of my life savings (and then some: thanks Mom, Dad, and Grandpa) on it in October 2001. It had (briefly) been owned by a young woman whose father had bought it for her, but who decided the car wasn't her cup of tea (!). Her loss, my gain; a fully-loaded year-old SL2 with 7,302 miles for $11,492. The CD player still works great, the A/C has never needed an ounce of recharge, and the car has carried me on road trips short and long all over the eastern US. The only drawback always was how easy it could be to get a speeding ticket while cruising along! I'm looking forward to being eligible for "Historic" plates in 2021. Only scary thing is that parts are becoming fewer and farther between, and as my insurance agent reminded me the other day, just about any claim is going to total the car. My plastic wash tub on wheels apparently has a blue book value of $500, LOL. But I love my SL2. I've had the chance to drive a Town Car, a huge Ford E350 van, and lots of cars in between, but I have the most fun driving the Saturn. Well, except for the kicks in the behind accelerating onto the highway. Good luck to you and may you travel many more miles in your SL2!
My 97 SL2 with 225k miles just burnt a valve and needs a valve job. I am contemplating doing a rebuild leaving the block in just like this video. Is there a reason you didn’t go with new pistons and rings? If there was bearing and crank issues is it possible to pull the crank while the block is still in the car?
Hello Chris. I enjoyed this video. I was gifted a 1999 Saturn SC2 that has a few minor issues that I am fixing. One part that I am having trouble with is finding a spring-loaded release tip for the emergency brake. Would you by chance know where I can find one? I have tried Ebay, Rock Auto without success. The car body is in great shape, and I want to fix it up as a spare vehicle. I have been learning everything about them since I get the car and I am impressed with it. Hope you can stir me in the right direction. Thanks.
So you can 3d print them. I have one on my 1998 saturn SL2 that I 3d printed. There is one on thingiverse for download if you know someone with a 3d printer
Thanks! I would like to know more about the valve job on these engines. Mine has a bent exhaust valve on #3. I tried to straighten it without disassembly. What are my chances of this lasting? Also, #3 has lower compression, I assume the stuck oil ring. Any remedy besides disassembly? Thank you!
Definitely do a new valve and lap it in. When you take the had off, pull the pistons out and clean the ring lands with a broken ring. Look for scratches in the cylinder wall you can feel with your fingernail. If none, use a ball hone and do new rings and valve stem seals. The bent valve will cause your low compression
@@PSBEadventures Thank you! Taking the head off is beyond me at this point. Should I dare drive it? After straightening the valve shaft, the compression is now up to 70 from 20 and doesn't stick anymore. When I fill the cylinder with cleaner (Berrymans b12) it drains out within a few minutes. Thank you!
Got a 95 Sl2 also, 236,000 miles the comment i did a comment at the video describes the mods I did and still runs terrific. Was so lucky they had my color too, gonna do em when the window motor on the passenger side goes cause the outer door skins gotta come off to do the motors anyway, haven't got around to it.
I have an 01 SL1 that had 274k on it before my nephew ran it low on oil, scored three holes, and boogered up two rod bearings. Slapped the engine out of my 282k mile parts car in it and its back to being my daily beater

@@junechris excellent. I'm actually in the process of a rebuild and turbo on mine. Mine is fully gutted and weighs almost nothing lol. I'll let you know how it goes 👍🤙🐌💨💨💨💨
@@MU93N_POW3R I'm wanting to do the seats in the front carbon fiber but I gotta have some interior. Wish I could find one with a 5 speed. Even with the mods I've done its definitely quicker but to keep adding more like a turbo I'd feel better with a manual. Even if u could on a whim find a universal transmission computer the TATT transmission would likely die earlier. With a 5 speed u u could run an EMS 4 from AEM for like 800 bucks or so and the wiring anther 200 bucks, or a megasquirt, but the megasquirt are notoriously hard to tune. And I I'm not a tuner , good luck in even finding someone who does at that point.
lol nope. As mentioned by someone else, the Saturn Vue had a Honda 3.5L V6 engine in certain models from I think 2005-2007. The S-series was all original Saturn goodness.

Plis torque of head saturn sl2 1999??
22ftlbs, 33ftlbs and then 90 degrees
I have an 01 SL1 that had 274k on it before my nephew ran it low on oil, scored three holes, and boogered up two rod bearings. Slapped the engine out of my 282k mile parts car in it and its back to being my daily beater
Awesome job
Even though it's been some time since
Have the same exact one. how ironic.
Fail to see the irony. Coincidental?
@@canvasbuttercup2223 yeah that too.
My 94 sc1 has 434k👍

@@junechris nice. 👍
@@MU93N_POW3R yeah, I looted vintage from the deal they gave me. I'm sure they thought nobody might call to buy them.
These motors as crude as they are, are bulletproof engines there’s a UA-cam video of a guy hitting 1 million miles on his Saturn
I heard that these motors are realy Toyota motors I can remember were I heard that
Welllll, no. The Vue SUVs had Honda Motors for a while but Toyota ? Nope. S Cars are home grown.
lol nope. As mentioned by someone else, the Saturn Vue had a Honda 3.5L V6 engine in certain models from I think 2005-2007. The S-series was all original Saturn goodness.
I bet the she is that clean lol
