I meet Billy in 1983 when he was my guest at my press conference at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. I was the first man who was running around the world. Billy was a great wonderful runner gifted and has the most beautiful nature . The power he showed in the last 200 meters of his Olympic run shows the power of his mind and the speeds he could harness. Long long life Billy my family and I will always have you in our hearts. Peter Parcell. Globe Runner.
I grew up in a rural town in CA and my high school cross country coach showed this video to our team in 1998, it inspired me so much. Coincidentally I got to meet Billy Mills when we boarded the same airplane to the Mt. Sac races only a year later, it was soooooooo cool!
Was never a fan of Robbie, but noticed that his form and rhythm looked very much like and elite athlete. An excellent movie about an exceptional champion.
Have you seen "One on One" he's good in that also. He's a good athlete, he played basketball. He wrote the script for that movie. For me it was that movie, I was too young for Ice Castles. 😊
Thank you for sharing. I've always wanted to see this movie. Billy Mills is such an inspiration. I've watched the end of the actual race online multiple times and it always brings me to tears.
Back in the early 80's, when I was in Middle School in Honolulu, HI., we went to Varsity Theater to watch this movie. And when the movie was over, to our surprise... Billy Mills stood up from the front and waived to us?! He spoke a little about the movie and told us what was real and what was added for the movie. He was a nice, humble person!
Good God I've been searching for this AWESOME movie for ages ,I grew up in Berkeley California reading about Mr Mills extraordinary Gold Medal Performance in The 1964 Olympics, what a heart pounding run that was in the 10,000metres . I wish they could Honor him again in this 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris 🍁💜👍
Wonderful movie so uplifting what you went through Billy Mills , I’m not American Indian but I know what it’s like to not fit in and your story is so inspiring and lifts up my life thank you very much
This is one of my favorite movies since childhood. I can't remember when I watched it for the first time. Since I see that it was made in 1983 that's the year I was born. Amazing and beautiful movie ever. Among other true story films as well. God bless all those athletes keep thriving 💯🙏🏾👏🏾
One of the first movies I ever saw on cable when we got it in 1984. I was 14. I was a sports fan but never knew about him or this story. Amazing from top to bottom.
Billy Mills…. Awe a man from Kansas. Developed by a coach who had little understanding of pacing. It wonderful to have seen him win in the Olympic Games. And he came from behind…. Like he always knew he could. He set a world record…
@@sarahcartier3393 Yes at the time his coach only cared about winning and was true of the high ranked KU Distance runners in the 2000's they had a coach who only cared about winning not pacing. He was much nicer then the Coach of the 1960's and 1970's though and was more normal according to a guy I met who was at the time running for KU from Miller South Dakota.
What incredible grit. He ran his race and made his mark on the history of the Olympics. Billy Mills not only stood up for his people the Oglala Sioux but for all Native people in North America. This movie reminds me in so many way of the movie McFarland. I have a friend who ran cross country and he said the long distance team from McFarland could not be caught. The team of McFarland was made up of the hard working people from Mexico who have worked the land of the San Joaquin Valley in California.
Now I understand why they used Robby Benson. They look similar. This gentleman had a heart problem. God Bless him, he's a champion also. The amount of effort and energy it took for him to do his job.
Footage of the 10000 meter race from the Tokyo Olympics can be found on UA-cam, allowing us to see for ourselves how the race actually finished. The movie has the usual Hollywood overkill - the savage push with 400 meters remaining by the race favorite never happened and would have earned an immediate disqualification. Hollywood can never just recreate events as they happened - they have to pile on more drama ("the hero stumbles"), which detracts from Mills' actual performance. Geez, the story is already compelling enough.
Mills won the Big 8 cross country title and graduated from KU. This movie plays loose with the truth in order to create dramatic conflict. Good movie BUT...
@@barbarahanson210 Thanks, I've heard the phrase once or twice. But nah, the writers took so much license that the film risks no longer being a biopic. Mills was a disciplined, tenacious young guy who went on to be a successful businessman. He was never estranged from his coach or had these inner conflicts about living outside the res and marrying a white woman.
@@shangrila73eldorado Billy did admit to dropping out of a lot of races at major meets out of pure defiance. I think this was more an example of trying to dramatize the inner turmoil he felt.
The push portrayed at 1.36:27 by Clarke on Mills never happened. It was a slur on Clarke that he never deserved. And - I know - this is a movie and it portrayed this way "for dramatic effect", yet did it really improve the film? I think not. Clarke was a terrific bloke.
You’re wrong, the push happened exactly as seen in the movie. If you want to see it up close in the actual race check out the video “Billy Mills 10,000m Olympic Final One More Try” @1:45.
@@jonkurszewski1779 Yeah I saw that - what are you smoking? In the movie Mills is shoved across 2 lanes, that did not happen. The shoving of both athletes by Ghamudi (spelling) pushing between them a few seconds earlier was more pronounced. Look anyhow - it was a great run by Mills - on the day he was on and his victory was deserved. He can be celebrated without creating a "bad guy" in Ron Clarke, who had nothing to apologize for in this race. The Hollywood movie portrayal is more a slander to Clarke than a compliment to Mills. Hence my comment.
Easy, you little flip-flopper. First you said that “the push portrayed in the movie never happened”, now you’re saying that it did happen and just wasn’t as pronounced?😂 Where did the room for Gammoudi first come from to get in between Clarke and Mills if Clarke and Mills were running shoulder to shoulder? You’re ridiculous if you think the movie was more of a disservice to Clarke than a credit to Mills.
@jonkurszewski1779 yes, the push portrayed in the movie did not happen;ie the act of Clarke of exaggerated shoving of Mills across 2 lanes did not happen. End of story.
Billy mills was the one I loved, I started running because of himy hero. 1970- 1973 in high school. Thank you Billy ❤

I ran cross country in high school in my sophomore year (1984). So, rented this movie for me. It was inspiring
Thank you for this wonderful movie. Our children need to be❤ inspired. Understanding hardship, but seeing the reward of that effort.
I had no idea that Robbie had such a natural runner’s stride. Billy Mills ran amazingly.

Billy Mills spoke at my hugh school in Gallup, NM. I got his autograph with his picture, what a legend!

I so much love this movie...wonderful story and it has that great made in the seventies feeling even though it takes place in early sixties.
I love that he kept his focus until the end. Too many runners these days look around at their opponents.
I took my nephew's to see this movie.
