Billy Mills is from my tribe and a tremendous inspiration. Like him, I went into the Marine Corps and used that money to get through law school. Billy inspired me to run when I was a little girl. I have used it to cope with everything in life. At the age of 46, I have run three LA Marathons and two half Marathons.
LOOK AT MILLS!!! LOOK AT MILLS!!! Amazing. I don't know what's better, Banks's call or Mills's dreamy smile as he relives this incredible triumph of half a century ago, this day that he just *knew* he could do it. What an inspiration--if he doesn't already, Mills really should go into motivational speaking!
What a very wise and spiritually together dude. "It takes a dream to mend broken wings and fly like an eagle." I want to be like him when I grow up. (I'm 63).
Anyone out there who is a competitive athlete at any level, LISTEN TO WHAT THIS BRILLIANT MAN SAYS. THAT is how you plan for and attain a miracle! He convinced himself it was possible.
To me, this is the most inspired Olympic performance ever. Watching this still gives me goosebumps and a lump in my throat. Bless you Billy Mills! (See the movie “Running Brave” - very underated movie, with Robby Benson as Billy).
Bill Mills has been an inspiration in my life since 1964, when I was 13 years old. What he did with his life after his gold medal victory made me a life time fan. God bless Billy Mills for being who he is.
I don’t know you but I am in awe of you Billy Mills. Amazing individual from what I have gathered. I loved the movie running brave. I was 16 at the time and a runner myself. Your actual run is more amazing than the film portrayed and I thought that the movie exaggerated the scene for Hollywood effect. Thank you for such a memorable moment and the humanitarian work that you do. Fan of a real sports hero, not the jokes we have today in 2020
A tremendous, remarkable achievement for Billy Mills and the USA in his 10km Olympic final. This moment was an inspiration for many young runners in the year 1964.
I met Mr. Mills. Very sweet and humble. No arrogance in him at all. Thank you, Mr. Mills for serving our nation and, of course, winning the gold medal in the 10,000 meters in the 1964 Olympics.❤🇺🇲🏅
@thorpes85 I am not Lakota Sioux, I am from Mexico, but watching this video brings tears to my eyes, and reading about his life and his accomplishment inspires me. He overcame prejudice and conquered. All my respect to Him and all his people, the real owners of U.S.A.
It's crazy how much contact there was in that race, especially those last couple of laps! You just don't see that these days!! Very inspirational video. Mills is a great champion but also a great human being.
I still remember the day I met him...I was 7 years old and probably the only thing I remember from when I was 7...simply put this man is unforgetable..He is forever my hero..
We are coming up on another Olympics, and I enjoy the events, but I always come back to this race as my favorite. God bless you Billy Mills for what you achieved, what you overcame and for all you have done since that great race.
Absolutely. Remember watching that race on TV in 1964. I was 11 years old and was so pumped watching him win and hearing the announcer scream - I still get the chills every time I watch that race 50 plus years later. Best of the best
Amazing guy. Today, everyone would be suspecting steroids, but Mr Mills shows the power of the mind (and incredible preparation, of course) is even better.
A lot of people ask who the announcer was that said "look at Mills, look at Mills". He was Dick Bank a high school track coach that loved running events and was asked to be a color commentator. Bud Palmer the actual caller of the race didn't realize Mills was coming from behind and Bank grabbed the microphone and made the famous call. The network fired Bank and it turned him off on something he really loved. He said he wasn't trying to show up Palmer, but he wasn't reacting to the situation.
Dick Bank gave us one of the greatest calls of all time. He absolutely did the right thing by grabbing that mic. Look how much joy and inspiration it provides even so many years later.
I just got done watching Running Brave with my eleven year old son Ian. He liked the movie. I'm thrilled and filled with emotion. May the Creator bless Billy Mills always.
This is the best way to achieve this sort of seemingly impossible goal, small but consistent improvements all added up. Well done Billy, a clockwork plan came to fruition and you got your reward.
I run the 2 mile and one of my last races there was 400 left and I faded to 7th. The leaders were about 50 meters ahead of me so I just thought to make my move now in the last 400. So I felt amazing running the last lap and I caught up and came in 4th. Never felt better in any race of my life.
This year there was a Fresh/Soph and I was a freshman in the 1600m. It was so windy. This kid who pushed me a few weeks before the race was in it also. He was a Sophomore. I don't remember anything until 450m to go when he took off. Then I knew, if I could hold on I could win this, "he won't ever out kick me, I won't let him" were my thoughts. Then at the 225 mark I took off, and everyone thought my kick was too early. But I held on for the win! Best win ever in my life!:)
A few years ago I got to meet and speak with Billy Mills in person! and THEN his friend 'Kip Keino' walked up!! WOW! I can't believe this, I was thinking, I'm here with Billy Mills and Kip Keino!
the tingling sensation signifies you KNEW,just KNEW that you're gonna win, finish the race ahead of everyone else,no matter what distance in between you have to cover up..you can feel it and that no one,not even the ones in front of you can reach the tape first except you.the sudden feeling that you can outpace anybody at the last moment.i experienced it once..only happens in long distance running..
Great discussion! Never knew this about his self-visualaization. Scuzzy move by Clarke! Listening to the actual race commentary is electric!! I hope Billy was able to watch the 1500M today (at age 86!). Not as big an upset as his but just as exciting.
@whaaaaateverful: Agreed! His stride lengthens in a way that all theorists of running stride would call ill-advised. Watch it again and again and it remains magical. It's as though he willed himself to fly. It's quite surreal. It's "crushing," I imagine, to the two guys he crushed. But from his own perspective--and ours, if we allow it--it's pure magic: light as a feather, supreme effort as pure realization. I'm waxing Platonic because that's what I'm seeing: pure Will in action.
A couple times when I was running cross country I had an event that boosted my adrenaline. One time my jogging suit zipper became stuck and I thought I wasn't going to be able to get it off. The adrenaline was pumping through my veins. I ran one of my best races then. I wonder if Mills getting pushed out caused a jolt of adrenaline which enabled him to finish with such a kick.
@IkaikaKahoano Totally agree with you. The determination and inspiration of billy mills in this video is just amazing. This has got to be the most inspired video on youtube. Makes me want to throw on my running shoes and go. Glad you checked out the movie though! happy trails bro : )
incredible video. If you're a fan of Billy Mills or just running in general check out "Running Brave". pretty good movie. especially since its from '83
Maddie brewer ...you are lucky and part of us...Your Grandpa makes all us proud.....Not many Native Heros in sports...your grampas race always make me proud to be an Indian..He did us all good!
I remember that day. Early fall afternoon in 6th grade. I was ten years old. Got home from school. No one home, flipped on the TV to watch the Olympics and there was the 10,000 final. Black and white, poor picture. Didn't know anything about the American runners. When he was among the leaders early I thought it wouldn't last - but he did. I still have that race burned into my memory 53 years later.
You are lucky to have such a man in your family. My wish for you is that you have the same heart and strength-- this country is not an easy place for first peoples to realize their dreams.
dang dude thats awesome. if you have a video of that you should put it on youtube. i love seeing that stuff. i have a few of my races on here and one of them is a nice come from behind win in the 800m where i PR'd by 3 sec my sophomore year
@IkaikaKahoano I figured the name was a derivative of "Little Lebowski Urban Achiever". One of the coolest youtube handles I've seen yet. Well played. TBL is definitely in my top 10 (maybe even 5). I pretty much only watch comedies. Anything with Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller etc. I also love standup. I think laughter is very important in life. Oh and sports, too. I only watch ESPN and Comedy Central. :-)
Just a bit of Trivia, when Ron Clarke (former record holder before Mills and race favorite) was asked if he was worried about Mills, he replied "Worried about him? Never even heard of him" wow

Him and Thorpe greatest Native Americans Olympic champions
Almost 40 years later, still one of the top moments in sports history.

This is the best video on the internet. It's perfect. That finish gives me goosebumps every time.
Try the whole race commentary from the last couple laps and the film Running Brave!
He has such a calming voice; I could listen to him for hours!!
I was 16 when he won this race. I watched it and cried with joy. What a Heart, Billy Mills.
Billy Mills is true legend ! One of greatest win ever

The most-thrilling Olympic moment. Sheer willpower.
Still the greatest kick in history. This one and Dave Wottle.

Such a gentle man with the heart of a fighter.
Still one of my favorite movitation clips when I need a boost. Thanks Billy Mills (y)

The commentator when he screams "look at Mills, look at Mills!" is about the most ecstatic I've ever heard anyone get.
yeah, and he got fired for being so emotional
Just amazing. What an amazing human being. The finish is incredible...
I find this so inspiring!

love the excitment of the announcer. The best kick I have ever seen

How fast did he run those last 30 meters? He ran liked an olympic sprinter. Incredible!
What a inspiration, I could watch this all day long , great upset and great finish
what a neat guy, got to hear him speak at our school and shake his hand.
Great video, remarkable human being. Consummate role model. The call at the finish and the 'war whoop' at the end frames it perfectly.
This finish sends chills down my spine

“Look at Mil- … Look at Mills! Look at Mills!!”
