  • FOR YEARS I have been telling people that you dont need a ton of front grip to drift. Now Im finally going to be able to prove my point. I headed to the junk yard to pick up 20 year old SPACE SAVERS to throw on my car and rip with. Watch what happens!
Thanks to Gundies Auto Wrecking for the spares!

I've gone from using scrubs to overkill grip in the front, and I feel like it just hides driver mistakes and creates bad driving habits. Obviously at a pro level and tandem driving you want a proper setup but for beginners its excessive imo

  • @RileyLH
    @RileyLH 3 роки тому

Front grip at my local track is pretty important if you are taking an outside line. It's a fast straight that you Manji then it goes to a long sweeping corner to a hairpin. If you have too high of a front tire pressure when you take the outside line (cough cough the cool line) your car wants to keep going forward with all its speed and you start going wider and wider until you hit the marbles and lose all rear grip.

Both of you said a balance set-up and one of you (cant remember which) said youre steering with the ass end, making the big changes with the throttle and the small changes in the wheel. since then ive been running 215 or 225 westlakes (i had 225 westlakes when you drove my car) and dropped the 225 feddy rs-rr. i love the way my car drives since the change. and if its understeering im obviously not driving it hard enough.

I found a similar but no way as severe situation when I tried a set of 235 40 18's on a 8.5J on the front of my old s14 and spun out a few times (bear in mind I have been drifting quite a long time), back on the 225 45 17's on a 9J or even 205 50 17's on my 8J's and everything was back to normal, it could have been that I couldn't adjust to it (or the wheel width and size changed my suspension set up, or maybe the 18's touched the inner wing where I didn't realise) but seemed like it was dragging the front having the extra tyre size and wheel width/mass...

This proves what ive been saying for years as well, you need front grip for big flick entrys a bit, and after that its just pointing the car in the rough direction it should go and the rear does all the steering. Sticky fronts are just very helpful in covering bad front suspension setups (and im guilty of that)

you are overall Chelsea a person, thanks to which I have such a fun drift suspension knowladge what I have now, but comparing to your FD experiance and mine from last 3 years and 4 cars - will not fully agree :) 1st of all I'm opinion, that your both FD progress in Mustangs is 1:1 connected with better front grip and better selfsteer. Cars are noticable (just from watching movies) easier to control. 2nd of all: make such test in your ori 318ti :) My experiance from my 316ti (100hp or below, on the channel) says - this car pushes so much forward due to having no power to lift the tires easily, that without front grip to 'hold it' 'forced' on the drift line, it will be not able to drift. Here it is possible thanks to great SLR geometry and huge amount of NA-blasting torque which fires up the tires immediately. I will be glad to heare what do you think about my theory :)

@@chelseadenofa My comment doesnt deny anything you are saying. Every car had a balance for front and rear grip that should be decided by the driver, I think we both have this same understanding and you attempt to prove that with this video. The problem is the people that's only takeaway from this is you dont need front grip, some setups do and its up to the driver to dial the car how they like it. Ill say it again, too many people take your words as the words of god and dont get any other opinion or input, they are just clones of your driving style.

Sick that it worked out so well.. I guess for drifting it can be awesome to learn better in the beginning, just like you shouldn't start with 400 hp, always start small for learning, same for grip Oriented racing, I learned to drive fast and smooth with my mk1 Golf wich made driving fast in more powerful and advanced cars way easier. I don't think the no front grip thing would work out on a grip car lol, like we're the brakes lol 😂 awesome video man 👍

I used to beat guys with stock road tyres on the front of my car, I always thought they were wasting their money putting semi slicks on front.

I remember my mate mentioning he wants to run a competition where everyone runs these wheels on the front.
Would really seperate the men from the boys 🤣

I think the front alignment is more relevant than the grip on the front tires, so your car performs well so

Drift cars are literally turning into drag cars

They are 'drag cars', FD cars especially are built to be fast with as much grip as possible

Chris Harris did this a few years back with 4 spares on a C63 AMG
    On a wet track haha
It looked super cool and he said it was super fun

Yea the 4 spares would absolutely work, but that wasn’t the point of my video, it was to show a normal drift car that has no issues keeping up with everyone, then toss spares on it
