- This year’s completed One Week Wonder had a successful first flight at Wittman Regional Airport on Thursday morning, August 18. Joe Norris was at the controls of the Sonex Waiex-B on a beautiful sunny day.
The One Week Wonder project began as a kit on Monday morning of AirVenture Oshkosh 2022, July 25, and ended on Sunday, July 31, with the aircraft’s first official taxi during the air show.
EAA Director, Chapters & Homebuilt Community Manager Charlie Becker reports that more than 2,200 people stopped by the booth to pull a rivet.
What makes this Waiex-B unique is that it is the first to incorporate a factory-designed installation of a Rotax 912iS engine.
The aircraft will also feature a custom paint scheme courtesy of the “Pick The Paint” contest presented by The Sherwin-Williams Company and supported by Scheme Designers Inc. Voters had 10 options to pick from, created by Craig Barnett, CEO of Scheme Designers Inc. After more than 5,000 votes, an American flag-based design was the winner.
More test flights are on the horizon as the aircraft certification process continues. Once certified, the One Week Wonder will be flown by EAA to chapter events and other activities throughout the country.

My two sons and I pulled rivets on the one week wonder this year. Great to see it fly! So what happens to the airplane now that it is done?

Nice job! Performance looked pretty sporty w/ the 912iS!
Beautiful aircraft! EAA never ceases to empress!
Amazing and Iove to flight
What a thrill! You guys done good!
Congratulations! What a fantastic accomplishment. Kudos to Sonex and EAA!!
Awesome!!!!
You must feel like a test pilot when you take off a kit when it's finished. The frame, skin, wings, tail, and engine have to settle in. It's cool that everyones names will be preserved for the life of the plane/paint job. Great idea teaching people & letting them see it fly. Its their plan.
Awesome!
I really enjoyed watching the various reports of the build during the week at Oshkosh and is great to see the plane in the air.
Was wondering if you folks will be posting more info from the build, things like specs specific to this plane with its Rotax motor and such. I’m guessing the plane was built reasonably bare bones other than perhaps flight electronics so I’m curious as to its finished weight. Thanks
Bravo! I'm sure it went through a thorough inspection before flying. How many squawks (if any) were found and addressed?
Would love to see a turnkey panel like the one you have in there with plans all purchased direct from Sonex.
think back to the Wright brothers building many designs. how cool is it that we can build an advanced flying machine in a week (with the help of some friends) aviation is amazing
I think I see my rivet
nice team
I hope that airplane doesn't get the reputation of the 1970'S Bananza with the V tail. I hope it flies better too! The Bananza's were nicknamed The Widow Maker or The Doctor Killer!
The only thing our Y-Tail aircraft have in-common with the V-Tail Bonanza is Bernoulli.
@@SonexLLC and Newton of course
@@SonexLLC What is Bernoulli?
It’s not a V tail. The Y tail is a far safer configuration for stability and spin recovery.
