As a Behavioral Therapist myself and a relatively recent follower of the BBC, it's amazing to see other people drawing parallels between the benefits of your podcast and those of psychotherapy because I completely agree with that. Obviously, you're not mental health professionals, but I agree that some of your analyses break down the most common inadequate behavior patterns related to self-improvement and competition in general. This is similar to what a sports psychologist or an individual psychotherapist would do, albeit with a technical and clinical approach. However, some of the benefits are undoubtedly present since the reflections that typically lead to what you refer to as "a chain series of events" that promote changes in behavior and mindset are there, and with the extra advantage of being more accessible and relatable to the average player. Being able to encourage that kind of self-reflection is, in my opinion, one of the qualities of outstanding coaching. Thank you for your service to the League community!

On that point of treating yourself as though you were advising a loved one, there was another study done that showed people are far more likely to give their pets prescribed medicine than to take their own prescribed medicine. We are notoriously bad at treating ourselves with care and respect, it's great to bring some attention to that so we can work to do better!

I started listening to you a week or two ago. Since then, I sticked to one champion, I disabled chat, I am training in 3Blocks, I changed my pov to the game, I review every single game and take notes with every one of them. I lost so many ranked games, I went from S2 to S4. And I get that, because I need to relearn the game. Thank you for that ❤ It feels so much better to play now😊

The all-in mindset can be characterised in a few examples. The one I am most familiar with is the food -> You either have the WHOLE cake (packet of biscuits/ pizza fill in the gap) or you have nothing. With regards to league how I would think of it is the player who burns their ult in a skirmish for example, lose their bot lane, and because of this they try and salvage SOMETHING and full send it under the enemy tower. OR another example is maybe the player who stays mid all game because they will ONLY roam when there is a guaranteed team wipe on the table for them (an exaggeration but you get the point)

The all or nothing mentality is perfect whem describing "carry only" players. Theres been plenty of games where lets say a laner like Kayle or Kat or Vayne cannot carry (be it team comp or just the way the gsme played out) and they will intentionally spam FF votes on cooldown even if their team is winning overall. You could be up 3-5k gold and multiple dragons but if "im not fed" then theres no point. Very common in solo queue

I have the 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 (some fully, some just a bit, some I learnt to deal with them, some I still struggle, some on league, some not on league) and it's funny cuz I didn't know about this at all but I was conscious about these issues and tried to use most of those bad mentalities to my favour (sometimes worked, sometimes didnt) and actualy thanks to some of those bad mentalities I became better at whatever I do (league included). For example, the 8. About the 8 when I've been in my for funing mentality, I blame others cuz 5 (expecting them to do more than I shoudl expect them to do etc.) but when I'm on tryhard mentality I blame everything on me (i dont like torture myself either; I just think "im cancer i have to improve maybe if i did X Y and Z this wouldnt happen" and then keep playing the game at my best), and that made me improve a lot because then I go check the vods and think "ok how could I change it" instead of the typical mindset that people have of "unlucky bad teammates i could do nothing" and then in the vod review i realize that maybe it wasnt my fault and I shouldnt blame that on me cuz was not under my control at all, but whenever it's my mistake, I can learn from it easier than the kind of people who have the opposite mentality.
Tbh maybe the 8 is the only one that can have a real "positive" part from the ones I listed, cuz the rest are kinda bad; 6 made me lose many games before the game started or when the game was not decided but I "predicted" it was lost and then didnt even have the "let's learn mentality" just the "go next cba", 5 is also always bad ofc, 4 also always bad (but in my case it never had a "pessimism" because of it and ig its cuz im quite realistic as a person, 3 also usually bad but in league didnt affect me negatively at all, indeed I think it affected me positively, because it gave me fuel to keep improving?, however in school it did affect me negatively (really hard, indeed), beause I reached the point in which I wouldn't go to exams or deliver projects cuz it was not good enough and well having a 3/10 is better tha a 0/10 but for me anything under what i consider my lvl to be was not good enough so not doing it.
Anyway, so that is my experience and id like to say that despite having all those shit mentalities in myself, I reached challenger s3 at 13yo (i dont consider that true tho cuz back then league was not good lvl and also no master/gm and i legit won promos and went down after idk 2 games? like legit not real challenger xd), master s8, the rest of the seasons ive been gold+ (sometimes gold, sometimes plat, sometimes diamond) playing for fun, and this season looks like a master+ season to me (if i have time cuz too much irl stuff). I dont think im making it to gm or chall tbh but will try. Masters for sure.
Tbh mentality is IMO the more important thing about climbing; the macro and micro u need is easily achievable for everybody willing to put the time and effort, the mentality no. You can be faker and then stuck in pisslow because you have the 9 habits and you cant stop yourself from having bullshit in your rotten brain. I mean maybe people disagree about this, tbh I'm not even sure about it and I don't know if its something objectively true or not, but according to my knowledge and personal experience, mentality is the key. if you check my rank and my mentality, the common pattern is that shit mentality = lower rank and didnt matter if I knew more about the game, applied my knowledge better, etc. because i the end mentality is what prevented me from climbing. Maybe I say this because I always had a good game knowledge and decent mechanics( if you ask me my mechanics are shit tho) for whatever reason and in my soloqueue journey it was 99% mentality but in normal case it's not like that. I legit have no clue XD. All I know is that for me mentality is everything. Maybe if this season I try to get challenger I realize that mentality was not all what I need, but since my aim has always been masters (and many seasons i didnt have an aim at all) mentality was what decided it.

as weird as it sounds I play my best games while im listening to the podcast. Its like it allows me to remember the small little things while also not putting 100% of my effort and attention into the game itself. Makes it harder to tilt and take a second to think about why things actually happened instead of just assuming blame on a teammate right away

Another thought for habit 3 all or nothing mentality could be not being curious enough towards limit testing plays. Of course the eventual goal is to take high percentage plays however in order to get there you gotta limit test. If a person had too much habit 3 they might be essentially scared to make plays, and playing too passively as a result.

i feel like all of these habits can be translated into individual games. you had problems with the one abt "all or nothing", but id say its pretty easy to fit that into a persons mental ingame. People who tilt very easily are often affected by thiss "all or nothing" habit, where if ANYTHING goes wrong in the game they loose their shit and just wanna ff. An example could be if theyre 10 kills ahead after 15 minutes and then loose a teamfight for rift or drake. A person with this mindset will most likely tilt because the game now has started to turn into the enemies favour, and the climb in this individual game is not as easy anymore.
All the others are very easily applicable into ingame situations too.

1:02:45 I disagree about the "learning a champ sucks". I mean I agree 99% times, but in my case each time i tried to learn an op champ whose playstyle fits me, I had a lot of fun, and thats one of the reasons why it's hard for me to OTP; I hardly ever really find the champ who is strong enough and plays the way I like to play so that I can commit to learning him/her.
I learnt lee sin early seasons and became otp /played other champs tbh but mainly lee sin) then s8 camille and now hecarim, and in all those 3 OTP archs I had it was lot of fun to learn the champ, but outside of those 3 stages of my life, each time I tried to learn a champ it really sucked till the point that I gave up because I didn't feel enough love for the champ to commit on the learning process or whatever.
So yeah I think that the learning a champ sucks is true but not always, but the few times that it doesnt happen you need the stars to align, pretty much.
Indeed, talking about Hecarim, since it's my S13 OTP champ; I wanted to become a Master Yi otp, beacause I remmeber Master Yi S9 and 10 how fun he was to play, so I'm like "i wish i could be like sinerias cuz the champ is hella fun to play" but then you try to learn him and improve and whatever and you hate your life cuz you need to be really good for him to be good in higher elos, specially when its so easy to play against him, so I was in this soloqueue tournament with my high elo friends after 8 months not playing league cuz no time, and trying to learn yi was such a pain, so I said "lets check a few tierlists and think about a real champ to play" and came to the conclusion that Hecarim could be it, and I started to play it and had fun every single game and learnt the basic stuff quite fast without even checking high elo hecarim otps or whatever, and got from silver 4 (gold 2 mmr) to diamond in 50 hecarim games loving the champ and the process and everything, also using my own build (indeed, my first game was trying out the common build from hecarim otps high elo and i hated my life that game so decided to play him like i used to play hecarim many years ago the few times i played him, and it worked really well) so yeah that is my experience idk. And I know that I shold learn 1 more champ cuz well I don't wanna be otp and having 2-3 champs is better than only 1, and im strugglingto find the other champ, because it sucks to learn a champ, but with heca (now), camille (s8) and lee (season 2-3) that wasnt the case for me

I would like to add smth about these habits. The other name is "cognitive distortions", the "All or Nothing" Shonen kind of thinking is not a problem as it is, the issue is if it's always "ON", there is no other strategy exists. It could affect how people set goals and how they implement processes as well. This mindset or "habit" creates unrealistic expectations especially when task requires time and continuous effort. It leads to long burnouts and disappointment. Also, the price in resources is always too high compared to end results (all is hardly possible in the reality, so the goal is never achieved). I think in the end it sounds like "I cannot hit Diamond-Master-Challenger-go Pro, so what's the point of making effort here at all, I’ll quit", but in reality, facts could mean awful lot of things (cannot hit within time frame I set to myself, cannot hit with effort I put into, cannot hit without investing or help, cannot hit 100% but 80% is possible). And even if it is not possible, this mindset force people to throw away smith they simply like to do and suck the fun out of smth they all-in-ing.

I think for me, I just feel like a fraud because I've hit plat+ with an 80% wr, but then some accs I have a 70% but then I drop an entire 10-20% or vice versa (start: losing later: winning) in lower brackets and I just feel like a fraud because I feel like even if we lose at 23 min there's some intrinsic part of me that feels like I should still be able to carry but its extremely hard to do that when there's no vision around the map and you are stuck in base. If the game has teamfights that are winnable or fights that are winnable I typically can take blame for that but when my entire team is behind and the enemy team is roaming its tuff

  • @testing-gn8vj
    @testing-gn8vj 11 місяців тому

The first question you asked was - why do you get mad at your teammates.
I think I can answer that sufficiently - the reason for getting mad isn't that the person is, "sabotaging my game."
Yes, sometimes people do troll, but generally I think if people are running it down it isn' like they are having fun either.
I think the problem is it makes your efforts feel wasted. So for example, if you deserve a higher rank or whatever, you may get unlucky for some period of times and have your standout games occur when you have rolled really awful teammates that may just make the game unplayable. In this vein, I can even give an example from a challenger player.
ChaseShaco has been a challenger player since season 6 or so, however he got stuck in GM and then master for a long time this season, before starting a new account which then took him months again to finally hit challenger with nearly 500 games played. Do I think he lost his skill from s12 to s13 and had to improve to be challenger-level again? No. It is more likely that in the games he performed, his team simply underperformed and thus it required playing a lot of games to balance out the good and bad luck.
Sure, he eventually reached challenger (as always) but I think it points to why people get mad - you can have to play a rather significant amount of games to get to where you truly deserve, as even if you perform well someone may just solo lose the game.
This isn't to say you shouldn't critique your own play and ask how you can push your advantages more, but I think it provides insight into why people really get tilted about the performances of others. Even at the highest level as we've seen.

Know objective spawn timer. So u can be there in time. Also know itemization what to rush when to build bits and pieces. Lite therapy for the majority of league players is clearly an overlooked and, beyond this podcast, unmet need. A place to go to emotionally defragment, re-centre perspective and be reminded that one's experiences are widely shared, in a positive framing from respected authority figures (i.e. not reddit), seems highly beneficial for online team games with strangers. I don't get the sense there is an equivalent need in traditional sports, presumably due to some mix of physical and social and expectations we have evolved to intuit, so I wonder if you are sowing the seeds for something that could/should be a support feature of future esports aimed at the general population?

Really frustrating to get your results gutted by people who don't have any idea what they are doing. 31:18 But talent does exist in League. There is IQ for instance. IQ will limit how high you can climb just like height can limit you in the NBA. It doesn't limit you perfectly, there are counterexamples but generally the trend is that better genetics will tend to push you towards the upper echelons of performance in all skillsets, IQ being the dominant factor.

The "All or Nothing" habit is a good habit. The only way to improve is to play at 100% intensity and devotion and discover your mistakes and bad habits from there. Playing at limited power will not only cloud your judgement with unnecessary issues, but confuse the proper trajectory of what improvement looks like for you personally.

This might be a stretch, but I think League attracts the kind of people who benefit the most from therapy. People with mental health problems, low self-esteem, irl failures, etc. are probably more prone to getting addicted to a snowball-y game like League wherein you can get fed, sometimes by luck alone, and feel like a god for the next twenty to thirty minutes.
Think about all the most "toxic" games (i.e. the ones with the most mentally ill players), and you'll see they all allow the player to get some sort of real material advantage over the other player (Rust, Battle Royales, Looter Shooters, CS:GO-likes, and ofc League). The high of being definitively stronger than everyone else in your lobby is very potent and can be addicting for someone with low self-esteem or someone fresh off a string of irl failures, especially if that high can sometimes be achieved entirely by chance, like in some league matches (e.g. enemy ints or some kind of circumstantial luck).
