I highly recommend watching EVERY QI episode featuring Gyles Brandreth. One of my favorites is Episode 5 of Series N (Negativity).
Gyles is the sort of guy who has crammed 11 lives into his one existence 🤯. It's ridiculous the situations and anecdotes he's come up with. Do check Qi Series P Episode 3 Piecemeal with Jimmy Carr, Sally Philips, Gyles and Alan. OMG cue the insanity
Come UP with ?
I was about to suggest that episode, so I'm glad someone already has. It's one of the best episodes and Gyles is off the chain!
Giles is a legend even on episodes of programs where he doesn't appear. There's an episode (S5E1) of _Would I Lie to You_ where Jack Whitehall claims that he was once commissioned to paint a portrait of Giles Brandreth's cat. The ensuing question and answer period is one of my favorites; Miranda Hart and Nick Hewer joined Lee Mack.
Gyles was first known as a radio personality and author, but the first line of his bio remarkably comes as a politician, of all things. He was an MP and a Cabinet member briefly under the John Major government in the 90s, and moved from there to being a TV personality, where he is best known, particularly in regular Countdown where he's consistently seen sitting next to Susie Dent and can do what he does best, spout off stories and anecdotes.
the present day equivelent of Clement Freud for example
@@highpath4776 That is tremendously unfair to Gyles. Clement Freud was a monster, Gyles is just a teddy bear collector.
@@PokerJoker811 I only knew of Clement from his cookery and long talks on radio and TV apperances prior to his election as an MP. Checking wikipedia I see his vote was instrumental in bringing down a minority labour government and leading to great changes. Quite how he found time to get up to other kinds of naughtyness that was criminal I dont know , and institutional cover ups are never good. I did not mean to put Brandreth in that boat.
Giles has had a fascinating life but they do write questions with him in mind, I'm certain the elves research him more than any other guest to exploit his memories in the questions.
Edit, he was also an MP
Get out.
Gyles appeared on Series 15, Episode 4 of "Would I Lie to You". Imagine trying to sort the truth from the lie in one of his stories!!!
I had the privilege of being in the live recorded audience for this episode. It was great fun.
Do you hear yourself laughing when you watch it back? Where you there or was it some kind of virtual audience which seemed popular a couple of years ago for some reason?
@@jeffrey44 it was recorded via a zoom like link. I had to watch with headphones in. I couldn't hear myself or any one else connected as the audience, just the studio. It was a little weird cheering and clapping by myself but I loved every minute of it.
Rosie has cerebral palsy. Muscular dystrophy is a progressive weakening of the muscles, and cystic fibrosis is a lung condition.
You concentrated on her disabilities but forgot to mention she's not funny.
@@Matt19matt19 Sad but true.
As someone once said on QI, Giles doesn't have a family tree, it's a f'ing forest
Erm on this show in the past the told you how potatoes break the sound barrier.
The crunch you hear/feel as you eat what we call crisps in the UK is the sound of the foodstuff breaking at the speed of sound. Each little crunch is a very tiny sonic boom. It's not just crunchy potato foodstuff but all foodstuffs that crunch...
I'm fairly sure I've mentioned this before - Rosie and Nish are very good friends (which I think comes acorss in this episode). Rosie has a habit, when they are out together, of lying on the ground and complaining loudly that Nish has 'pushed over the poor disabled lady'
I was going to make a comment about the bold choice that Nish made with his style during this episode (ie. ‘Wild Man’ was a pretty apt description) until I realised this was a lockdown episode and then suddenly everything made sense haha
Gyles Brandreth (despite being an MP for a party whose politics I certainly don't agree with...) is a wonderful character, very charismatic and full of great stories. You'll meet him again soon in one of your future videos, I can tell you for a fact...
Mmmm. What could it be? 😉
That is what Gyles is like on everything, he nearly always has a connection to whatever people say and it is very entertaining and it is often to things which seem so obscure...
Rosie always makes me howl with laughter.
Giles Brandreth obviously has an eidetic memory, he will remember anything he naturally understands or is actually interested in. Huge advantage over those with a photographic memory.
Eidetic memory is defined as short term photographic memory, not selective perfect retention
Something I appreciate about Nish is that he genuinely seems to find other comedians laugh-out-loud hilarious and really enjoys doing what he does.
Gyles is related to everyone, has met everyone and has an antidote about everyone, whereas Brian Blessed (mentioned) has done everything
And everyone!
A Google search says it's true about the no TV on Thursdays, from 1966 to 1987.
I've never heard of Gyles but he is fascinating. Jack of all trades, full of stories. Almost like a Bob Mortimer or Stephen Fry type. Very interesting character.
Very similar to Fry
I noticed this a while back, that in the cynical way people define things like diverse figures in entertainment as "box-ticking", it's easier for many comedians who tick multiple boxes to talk about things unrelated to either, as opposed to people who only tick one. Rosie is just such an example - she has cerebral palsy and she's gay, and yet the humor that stands out from her is the dark humor, like feet in blenders. There are other comics you'll inevitably encounter in the future like Larry Dean and Eshaan Ackbar who follow the same pattern.
R for Revolutions is a great episode with Gyles.
Gyles was aide to the Queen and long time friend of Prince Philip. He is fantastic raconteur and great on radio and tv quiz shows, hosts wordaholics. Writes books his new fiction series is based on Lord Byron, Sherlock Holmes murder mysteries.
Gyles Brandreth has been on various channels coverage of the death of Queen Elizabeth II as his anecdotes are perfect for open ended news coverage and of course he personally knew the Queen's late husband Prince Phillip.
Gyles is a national treasure.. his stories are amazing
Rosie and Nish are very good friends. They normally tour together with their stand-up shows.
I always feel bad because Rosie is cool, but whenever she speaks my ADHD kicks in and I get impatient and lose concentration. Can't help it but I do appreciate her.
It's a rare person who can steal a show from Rosie, who is such good value. I'm with you in suspecting the QI elves came across some stuff about Giles, found some more, and then wrote the questions so Giles could say "Well actually..." What a fantastic episode. You know its a great one when Alan doesn't have to carry any of the comedy.
I forget which episode it is but Gyles is brilliant on one with Sally Phillips (Sandi hosting). He has so many stories!
I would love to spend time with Gyles! I think you could learn so much from his stories. It would be like that eccentric uncle who traveled the world and has a story for everything. And at least some of it would be true. 😆
Found your channel from the Sandman reactions, and subscribed for the British panel show playlists, particularly Taskmaster. A video I recently watched had you mention you are in Vancouver. These factors lead me to recommend you check out Loading Ready Run channel on UA-cam. They're a comedy troupe and streamers from Victoria, BC. They have a playlist of their fan tribute Askmaster episodes that they produced during lockdown, and two seasons of their show the Panalysts they had done prior to that. Those and much more seem like it would be right up your alley.
I recommend Series 19, Episode 1, "Sick". Guests are Jo Brand, Maisie Adams, Lee Mack and Alan Davis.
Gyles Brandreth is a weirdly interesting person, he either talks complete nonsense with confidence, or just knows the most random information (and apparently people from this episode lol)
Dang I want friends who enjoy QI the way this guy enjoys QI
When my wife was giving birth I was asked by the midwife if I would like to deliver the baby, I put on some gloves and she talked me through what to do. I was then passed some scissors and told to cut the cord. Even though overcome with emotion, to the point of not being able to speak, I cut it. I remember that it was really tough and felt oddly strange. It had a very strange texture to it as the cut went through, almost grainy.
Qi Revolution with Gyles is hilarious
16 children!? And as Rosie made known, she's fit lol
Rosie suffers a condition called "cerebral palsy" which impedes immediate reaction from your brain to your body movement.... and in some extreme examples the body doesn't even obey you at all.. (an ex girlfriend of mine suffered it, I am talking from empathy and experience) It is hard, but it just incapacitates at a physical level, not mental., so most people whit this condition spend so much more on their minds an thinking..... Rosie is not only brilliant but adorable...
Someone's probably already commented, but a quick google copy & paste 'And for more than 20 years, from 1966 to 1987, Icelanders couldn't watch television on Thursdays. The government banned all programming on Thursdays so that residents would spend the time going outside and socialising instead.'
Ah, Rosie and Nish. Two of the comedians most likely to cause whining in UA-cam comment sections. That fact alone is reason enough to love them.
Nish is a comedian?
Rosie was with Mawaan on Big Fat Quiz: a disabled lesbian and a gay Muslim man: they called their team "PC Gone Mad".
As a huge Discworld fan, that Mended Drum shirt makes me happy. "So much universe, so little time."
You gotta be careful though, it's the type of t-shirt that will set itself on fire for an in-sewer-ants claim.
Two small things: a) It's really dramatic to me how much further ahead British TV is than North American about incorporating people with disabilities - beyond Rosie being quite ubiquitous, there's Chris McCausland, whom you know from WILTY and other panel shows, and then the whole Last Leg show. It seems like it's part of the deeper intimacy of England as a tight community - which once worked the opposite way, but when it changed, really changed. (b) It's not fodder for your channel, but Gyles has long been one of the regular virtuoso talkers (along with Stephen Fry, especially Paul Merton from Have I Got News For You, Sue Perkins and others) on Just A Minute, the longest-running (and in many ways best) BBC radio panel show, which I'm kinda surprised didn't come up directly here when speech-making skills were involved.
Esp as previous record holder i think was Nicholas Parsons
He did hint at it when he said he had to speak without repetition....the older episodes with Kenneth Williams and Willie Rushton are classic
@@paulliversage4479 I assume for the long speeches record it is not covering the same subject or phrases rather than a new word each time
please watch more episodes with Gyles he is one of a kind
Gyles is a former Conservative MP and a television presenter.
There is a fantastic podcast called "The Infinite Monkey Cage" with Prof Brian Cox as one of the main hosts. It's a light hearted but yet serious science based show aimed at everyday people.
In one episode There was a scientist on who had just written a book about fire in the universe. Within the first 30 seconds Prof Brian Cox asks him if fire can only exist if life exists. They had a talk about it and the books author concedes that Brian is correct and his research and book is wrong. haha. But it wasn't done maliciously and even the guest author found it funny.
But listening to that podcast and hearing the discussions they had, it really does seem like that fire might be impossible without life.
I'm not intelligent enough to go through it all. But basically oxygen is needed to have fire. Oxygen doesn't really form naturally. It's always connected to carbon or hydrogen. There needs to be biological life turning CO2 into oxygen. And unless that is happening, fire can not happen.
Canadian TV: Why are you asking us? You have a bunch of experience with the CBC.
Gyles always gets ribbed for the length of his anecdotes but he’s one of the most fascinating people in existence
Rosie has been Noah's support act.
For once i actually knew something lol. On The Ricky Gervais Show Steve Merchant has discussed the piano on Ben Nevis and how it got there.
I love Rosie btw.
oh man, i love Rosie
Any chance you react to episodes of The Chase? You've done most of the other UK quiz shows and I consider The Chase to be the best out of all of them
I watch for Bradders alone
Gyles Brandreth also used to be a Member of Parliament.
You know the Elves have their own podcast, right?
I adore Rosie Jones, catch her on late night for her full comedic talents.
She’s good friends with Nish and whenever they go out she’ll fall to the floor and point at Nish saying ‘he pushed me!’ 😂😂😂
I jus commented about this 👌😂😂
Thank you for this one, sad or scandalous... if only they had allowed him to finish one of his tales and not belittled him he really does have all these true stories to share
But hey there were giants which, for some reason have been erased from history... Yep Brandwith does have all these true stories it just happened to him. Sad part is all those "smart" people choose to make fun of what happened to him by being born 😏😒 😘🇬🇧
Series 1 Episode 5 Advertising is a classic episode with Gyles
I love Giles!
Not got into it yet,jus wanna address a point in your intro, yeh Rosie and Nish spend a lot of time together, I think that includes touring....
But one of Rosie's favourite things to do is,when she's out in public with Nish, she'll throw herself on the ground and loudly blame Nish to anyone around.....great visuals, a heavily disabled white woman on the floor, and a bearded Asian man stood by her....in post brexit Britain....👀👏😂😂
Yeh Gyles has had The maddest life...👀😱😂
Didn't say where the biggest fire is on your edit, but did she say where it is? I'm thinking it's one of these underground coal fires that have been going for years, there's one in the USA and one in China.
Gyles has got a story for everything, I know him mostly from a radio show called Just A Minute. He can get quite frankly a bit tedious after a while and sometimes I avoid shows with him in, although when he’s paired against Paul Merton there’s a good amount of balance.
Just A Minute is great, definitely worth checking out! They had some TV episodes as well, and at least some of them are on UA-cam.
Giles is best on QI
Weird thing to add here. But when you said ‘interesting. Quite interesting’ it made me wonder whether you were aware of the difference in meaning of ‘quite’ between North America and the UK.
Essentially North America ‘quite’ = very.
In the uk. If it’s before a qualifying adjective it means ‘kind of’
If you did know, sorry. If you didn’t. Now you do. I guess.
In posher society you might say 'the orchestra were quite amazing' to mean very
@@annother3350 Absolutely. You can use ‘quite’ to mean very when the adjective is unquantifiable. Amazing being unable to be more or less so. For the most part. Always exceptions to the rule though. Bugger of a language really.
Quite excellent. Very excellent.
Quite terrible. Very terrible.
Quite good. Not very good.
Quite bad. Not very good from the other direction 😂
Quite interesting. Interesting enough. But not mindblowingly so.
Third, maybe.
Second, maybe.
Aside from being a former Tory MP, disappointingly, Giles is really awesome. His stories are amazing.
?! Why are you worried about his politics?!
@@annother3350 British Conservatives are the equivalent to American Republicans, so it's disappointing. That's I said, "disappointingly." Everything else was very positive. You seem more concerned about the political side. He asked who Giles was, I made the comment that he was a Tory, but left out MP.
@@FLQueerLiberal1982 'Disappointingly' Tory makes you look a bit silly and wasn't really necessary so yes, i called you out.
What do ya know. Someone with different political views than you can actually be an OK person. Who'd of thought
@@rossross3689 Nobody who understands politics and cares about how they effect people. You do know politics is about the world right? it's not like religion where it actually doesn't have to affect others - people who have bad policies have let thousands of people die.
And Of course, a disabled woman and a bearded Asian bloke appear on the show, and these genius trolls come out😑
Really is pathetic how annoyed these eejits get by the mere presence of either of these 2👀🤦🏻♂️😂😂😂
Circumcision? Hell NO! I'm out!
With Rosie you have to like her and find her funny otherwise you don't like disabled people. 😉 It's alright not to like nish though as he's just annoying and not disabled.
I've always assumed Nish is a famous person I don't know as he's clearly not one of the comedians.
@@miff227 nah. I first remember him from mock the week. He just floats around on panel shows. He's quite annoying. I'm allowed to say he's not funny and annoying because he's not disabled.
@@Matt19matt19 Nish is very generous with his laughter, which makes him a good panel show guest. Other comedians bounce well off him.
Nish and Rosie, someone was punishing you with this rec.
With Rosie, the edit could have saved 10 minutes & shouting doesn't make something funnier.
Gyles is really good. Rosie not so much. I know it's not pc.
all props to Rosie.
But I cant really understand why you invite a person to a sort of talk show when they can hardly talk
I can understand her aswell. She's just painfully unfunny
@@Ffinity It's very difficult to understand her. I've been trying for a while
I know, these annoying disabled people, why don't they just stay indoors away from us normal people
@@paul1mcgarry Thoughts and prayers for you Paul in this difficult time
@@Ffinity she hasnt done her own nights so she's included with the ticket price!
