- I need a logging winch to use with my tractor. I could buy one, but I won't be happy. I want it to be remotely controlled and capable of controlling the spooling AND the unspooling action. And yet, to be driven by the tractor PTO. And to suit my needs, 3-ton pulling capacity would be plenty enough for my small 35hp Case 430 tractor. So I decided I would make my own version of it!

A hammer, torch and a good vocabulary of curse words will help anything get taken apart !!
Proof of it, it worked!
Always impressed with your creations! There won’t be anything that you can’t pull with that winch… it looks like a beauty! Take care, Jason.
Thanks Jason! We will see that in the next episode!
Your fabricating and engineering skills are impressive Joe, the last part of the video showing it in action was WOW 😮 . Great work 👍🏻. Bon weekend 👍🏻🙋🏼♂️🙂🇨🇦
Thanks Luc! Better to see it in real action! I'll make a movie next weekend!
You? Lazy? I don't think so. I've always liked watching your build projects, and this one will be no different. I fully intend to "stick around".
Thanks Jim! I am lazy in that way that I want to accomplish as much possible with the minimum of effort!!! That is my definition of lazy. I know some are lazy in that way they do their best to accomplish the minimum! Lol! Thanks!
@@FromSteelToWood 🤣🤣👍👍
lol "I'm lazy" then proceeds to build/adapt a winch that must have taken hours and hours of work. You are NOT lazy my friend hehe. Very cool project!
Yeah... lazy means making anything clever to minimize the effort, while having the optimal result! Lol! Thanks Étienne!
Sounds funny maybe, but I've wanted the perfect winch for logging and have been you-tubing for 10 years now trying to find a genius. I'm not sure I will have the ability to copy the same, but I'm willing to try.
Thank you Joe for taking the time to show your work, It's very much appreciated.
Thanks! If I had to do it again, I would not use the big (heavy) winch, I would built it from A to Z. The electric clutches are a big asset to this setup! They are safe and reliable. Thanks!
Wow! That's quite the project. Quite bold to take that on. Very clever.
Thanks Glen! That was quite a good project! Sprokets, belts, pulleys, bearings, electronic, machining, welding, etc!
Thanks Joe, every one should have a skidding winch, lol. Looks like a very nice project .
Lol! That is essential! Thanks Mark!
Good afternoon Joe!!!
Great to see you back!
Hey Gary! I wish I was a little less busy to publish more!
Can't wait to see what will become of this LARGE old Winch ......when it came up on the screen I about fell over ....now that's a WINCH !! I like it.... great things are bound to be pulled in by this I just know it !! 👍👍👍
Yes indeed! I've been logging last weeked with it and I wonder how I could manage to do without it! Thanks!
Yes indeed! I've been logging last weeked with it and I wonder how I could manage to do without it! Thanks!
Hi Joe! You’re a genius! That’s a very cool heavy duty logging wench! Looking forward to seeing part 2! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Martin! That is a bit too heavy to my liking, but I am not worried about its longevity! Thanks!
That is a beast! Love the dual electric clutch idea. I think a brake would be good to keep it from free spooling down hill. Can’t wait to see it in action.
Thanks Dave! It's very massive. Back then, when they claimed 30,000lbs, it was underrated. With the worm and spur gear, it does not free spool at all! Thanks!
Happy New Year Sir 👍👍👌👌😇😇🍻🍻
@@RCAFpolarexpress happy new year Dave!
Joe, you are one heck of an engineer with great fabing skills. That is going to be a really cool project. Have a good week! See ya!
Thanks John!
This looks like an awesome project! And the sneak peak of the next video at the end looks amazing! Can't wait
Thanks Ross!
Now that is a heavy-duty winch project! Keep warm
Thanks!
What a beautiful piece of engineering! This is going to be near impossible to top!
My only thought; do you plan to implement some type of emergency stop/ safety override? God forbid there is a sudden frequency interference on the winch controller, somehow causing the winch to stay on. Yes unlikely, but this winch seems like a tremendous amount of power/force to be trusted with our beloved cheap Chinese winch controllers. Stay safe my friend!
Ah!!! great point there! I think the fail side of the controller is to miss the signal, not to keep it on. Do you think so? I do have a switch on the winch to shut down the whole thing. Not an E-stop, but a switch. Once the winch is well planted into the ground, it will kill the engine before it pulls the tractor back, even on neutral. Thanks!
@@FromSteelToWood As you know, I installed that cheap aftermarket amazon winch controller on my Jib. I've experience instances where I will press Up (Winch in), and sometimes, the winch will stay on a few seconds after I've released the button. Sometimes I hit the Down (Winch Out) button momentarily, and that stops the winching.
Hopefully you don't have this same occurrence with your setup, just wanted to pass the info along!
Very impressive Joe! I am really looking forward to part 2. I am a big fan of winches, they come in handy and this is quite the winch. Nice to see a video from you. Happy New Year, Ben
Thanks Ben! Part 2 should follow in 2 weeks!
Looking forward too this . Lots of parts and some serious engineering going on here . Good too see you back at it . Maybe this will give me a jump start now that I’m retired and getting bored . 👍👍👍
Happy New Year Sir, Are You Making Videos YET !!!
@@RCAFpolarexpress Happy new year Dave .
It has been a while Joe, but I'm now looking forward to Part 2 of this winch.
Yeah, very busy, so editing videos is going second in my priorities... Thanks Reg!
@@FromSteelToWood I certainly can understand that Joe,.I'll be happy to see what your building, whenever you can,.. stay well.
That`s a big project, Joe. I made a winch about 30 years ago with about as much capacity as yours and I made it with a rear end to engage or disengage I would pull the axel out of the spider but I did not have a reverse like you do or a remote. For the time that is as much as I kneaded. Your setup is a lot more complicated. Good luck....CHEERS
Thanks! Good to hear you ventured into that project! That is THE longest project I did... with almost 15 days of work on it! At some point, I thought to myself I should have bought one! Thanks Gator!
Salut Joe!! Wow buddy this is a pretty beefy winch. Your design concept is very interesting. Having the winch spool and pull. remotely will be pretty interesting to see in action. Your sneak peek showed a fancy gear and chain drive system. I think your winch will be very nice and a big help for you getting your wood. Looking forward to part 2 and Happy New Year!!
Thanks Mike! I've tried it last weekend and I don't know how I could go without it! Thanks!
Salut Joe. So happy to see you back. Incredible....you never cease to amaze me. I wish I was as ''Lazy'' as you are...lol
Thanks Yves! That way I'll save a lot of steps in the forest, believe me!
Hey Joe! New to your channel. Man I am in awe. I would consider myself mechanically inclined and very handy, but man you’re on another level! That is going to be a great project! Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Mike.
Thanks! I've come to develop some kind of skill... lol! Thanks again!
Good Evening Joe 👍😇 Joe you are NOT LAZY Maan, You simply know what you want in life 👌🧐👍You Use Cursed Words 🤣👍👍Outstanding work that you have done with Mike 👍👍🧐🧐This is truly an ACHIEVEMENT OF PURE GENIUS my friend 👍😇👌🧐I can't wait to see Your Part 2 video Cheers 👌😇👍🍻
Good afternoon Dave ☕️☕️
Very impressive Joe!!!
Thanks Dave! Thanks for your help! It's a shame we did not finished it while you were there, for 2 good reasons: 1- to see it in action. 2- To paint it! I guess it will stay unpainted until you come back! Thanks again!
@@tractortalkwithgary1271 Good Evening Sir, it will be very cold tonight and we had just receive 12 inch of snow !!! Take Care Sir 👍👍😇😇
Thank You Very Kindly For Your very nice welcome both of you 😇👍👍 I shall return to paint it to My Favorite Famous Color ( Yellow and black strips !!! ) 🤣🤣 and I did not clean your Case Tractor 😢😢
interesting!!! looking forward to up coming vids !!
Thanks!
Looking pretty sweet
Thanks!
Unreal ,really great job
Thanks! Stay tune for part 2!
It is great to see a video from you and I really enjoy your projects. It is always good to see your Bolens in the background too. The old winch looks very cool and I like your design for upgrading it. Are you planning to have a remote control for the free wheeling part of the winch too?
That is a very heavy duty winch, hard to find quality like that these days.
Wow. That’s neat Joe. Are those electric clutch’s strong enough for what ever your going to pull,
Nice set up. Heavy duty winch. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👋
Thanks! The clutches are much stronger than I thought. They can stall the engine at mid-rpm level!
@@FromSteelToWood Wow, that’s good. Amazing the grip they have. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋
Want to have part 2 ;-)
Awesome. I recently acquired a Gar Wood winch with the idea to build a logging similar to your creation. Do you have any documentation you are willing to share or links to documentation? Also, what bearings (size) did you purchase and from where? Thanks.
Hello, you can send me an email, I will be able to supply some more information.
