CN Autorack Train - Cutler Street

- A loaded auto rack train, led by CN 8814 and CN 2504, rolls through the now closed (to vehicles) Cutler Street railroad crossing in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Lots of graffiti! This crossing was closed to vehicular traffic after CN purchased the Wisconsin Central. The signals, left over from the Soo Line era, were left in place as a warning to pedestrians and bicyclists who use the sidewalk to cross the tracks. Just to the south of the crossing (the background in this video) was also the location of the diamond for Chicago & Northwestern's former West Allis - Madison line. Part of the line in Waukesha is left in place as Wisconsin & Southern's Waukesha Subdivision, which branches off at this point and then shifts onto the former Milwaukee Road track about a mile west from this spot. WSOR has trackage rights over the CN between Slinger and Waukesha to reach their Waukesha Subdivision.
Dang, you're on a roll, Brent! Great catch!
LoL. Thanks, Josh. Back to work tomorrow for me, so this will be it for a while.
Unique railroad crossing right here.
Another great video at a very unique location and thanks for sharing! Wow, I have never heard a mechanical bell sound like this one and maybe it needs some work but still a wonderful sound compared to the newer ones. And the graffiti on this train is probably the WORST I have ever seen on any of your videos and it amazes me that the taggers do all this vandalism without getting caught.
The bell is okay. It's just an old clanger that's set at kind of a slow rate. I prefer mechanical bells to the electronic ones that have become pretty much standard. I understand the reasoning behind the new ones though. They're lighter than standard bells which makes them a lot easier for signal maintainers to work with. I'm amazed at some of the graffiti myself. I was wondering if any of the spray paint gets on the new cars inside the auto rack, if it gets tagged while it's loaded.
Thanks for your comments about the bells. Very interesting! And you ask a VERY good question if any of the graffiti paint gets on any of the automobiles inside the auto rack cars. I wish we knew for sure.
Yea every day I hear that bell on my way to school
Great location and video. And thanks for the background too. I railfan with my dad in London, Ontario.
Thanks! I have to check out your channel.
Awesome video man!
This bell has sadly been replaced by a Siemens e bell (safetran type 3) according to Google maps. The 8 inch lights remain though.
Actually, CN replaced the signals with brand new ones last fall.
Great video! Love the classic 8 inch signals with the mechanical bell! Though it sadly sounds like it's starting to die.
Thanks! I like them too. They're the only ones left untouched from the Soo Line days.
Brenton81 Are You Gonna Make Train crossing Vdeos Everyday?
No, sorry. I work during the week so I only do videos during my spare time, usually on weekends if I'm not busy.
nice video. I like the Canadian national auto train
Nice
This is. A great spot to park. All day. Taco John's is. Right there. Calm. Area. Then of course theres the wsor. Track that enters here. They are nt so great. But still nice spot. Dead end makes for foot traffic. Only. Lots of college people cross here too. It's a nice waukesha wi. Secret....sshhhhhh...
That's an SD70m-2 and a C44-9WL
Nice! I'll go there sometime
Waukesha is only about a 45 minute drive. Lots of places to film trains there.
Yea, my grandma takes me twice as long as that. She used to live near CN tracks, so I got to go to the CN a lot. She moved away but I still get there a few times a year and this location is on my shortlist
Very Nice I live in that city
Thank you! Waukesha is a nice city.
I have filmed a lot of trains here
Whats that road up ahead with all the traffic?
North Grand Avenue.
That bell is the reason I'd come here.
MB_Rock03 oh hey Rock03, funny seeing u here. Lowlz
Does anyone have a video of a cnw train on the old west allis to Madison line? I wonder when the last train went through before they pulled the racks out up to the cooper power customer (which I know they stopped rail) and the line doesn’t go past the new berlin industrial park.
I've personally never seen anything from the C&NW days. The last customer in Waukesha wasn't Cooper. It was the building on the corner of Pearl and Commerce. The tracks are still in place from New Berlin to Waukesha, with the exception of the Springdale Road and Les Paul Parkway crossings.
Brenton81 was the last customer getting shipments of salt via tanker cars? what is the likelihood the tracks will get pulled out west of Calhoun road? I saw they recently put a red paddle just on the other side of Calhoun road.
I'm not sure what the last customer was getting. As for the chances of the rails getting pulled up, that's anyone's guess. Union Pacific could file for official abandonment of that whole unused section of track at this point and it would more than likely be approved. The red board simply means the tracks are out of service from that point on. I know they filed for an official discontinuance of service over the western most 1.01 miles of the line back in 2015 when they were planning on removing the Les Paul and Pearl Street crossings. I haven't seen anything else since then.
Brenton81 Thanks for your thoughts. Is there any likelihood that the tracks will be put back in service? I don’t think there are any customers left on that line? Why did they pull the tracks out further west into Waukesha back in the late 1990’s? Did UP see no need to go into Waukesha in the old cnw line?
The only reason they'd put it back into service is if someone wanted to ship via rail again. I personally don't see it happening, but you never know. The Chicago & Northwestern was using the line through Waukesha to interchange with the WC, WICT, and WSOR. An agreement between the railroads was eventually worked out so cars could be interchanged elsewhere, rather than Grand Avenue. That plan was already under consideration during the C&NW days though, when all of the wig-wags in town were damaged to the point of being inoperable. The state was hesitant to pay for all new signal equipment because the future of the line was in question. Once an alternative plan for interchanging cars was established, that stretch of track was abandoned and pulled up.
If i had an art talent the last thing I would be doing is painting Rail Cars. I would be making money.
Quiet zone?
Yeah. The whole town on this line.
Hah! This crossing is illegal, as it technically appears to be open, and has no quad/full gates, no median and no wayside horns! I wonder if FRA considers this crossing an exception?
This crossing is closed. The signals are only there because of the sidewalk.
Ok
0:10 someone turned on or ages
why are they vented ?? must be a lot of dust in them ... are there ppl inside , too...
There isn't anybody inside, just new cars and trucks being delivered. The screen is just to keep people from throwing rocks as the train goes by and damaging the vehicles. It also allows light inside the auto rack so it is easier to load and unload.
