Loudspeaker audio fault with my XHDATA D-808 portable

- Hi there, how annoying that my D-808 waits until I'm out in the middle of nowhere before developing a fault. As of last night there is no audio to the loudspeaker, although the headphone jack is still working. I think the fault lies there as in parallel with no loudspeaker audio, now, when you insert the headphone plug into the socket, if you push all the way in, you only get audio in one ear piece. You have to pull it out a way to get audio in both. This is beyond annoying as I've spent so much time telling the world how great this radio is, only for my unit to fail! If anyone has any ideas beyond hard-wiring the speaker directly to the headphone socket, please let me know.
Just replace the headphone Jack. It’s not uncommon for the little “disconnect” tabs to loose their springiness over time and fail to connect again when the 3.5mm Jack is removed. You should be able to find replacements in RS or Farnell etc.
I have been hearing so much good about this radio that I finally spent the money for one.
The day after I placed the order, I started hearing complaints about it.😐
From what I hear, they are attempting to fix some of the glitches / problems that people have been having with them.
These are new radios from a new company, which is why I hesitated.
About 10 years ago I bought a Kaito KA1103.
Fantastic little radio - for about 3 1/2 years.
The it just wouldn’t change frequencies.
A total loss.
I placed my order through Amazon, and they said it would be some4-6 weeks for delivery.
I still have High hopes for the radio,..... but, will continue to educate myself on it.
Thanks for sharing this.
📻🙂
Hi Jeff, there's no doubt the D-808 is a superb portable, both in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. It's a shame however that the build quality is so suspect. I have had a buy a new one to replace my original unit which failed out in the jungle. Hopefully yours will provide many years of service! 73! Clint
Hello. Can you please update your experience with this radio year after?
I bought one last week, on the basis of several glowing reviews, and it worked fine for a couple of days. Then I switched it on, after being off overnight, and there was no audio from the speaker. I had NOT used the jack at this point. I did the same thing as you, I did the factory reset and also removing the battery, which made no difference whatsoever (I also didn’t expect it to). However, I had noticed your video during my search of D-808 videos on UA-cam and thus decided to check if audio was working with headphones. Sure enough, it was. Upon removing the jack plug the audio was again working with the speaker. I’m not sure how the jack socket had spontaneously caused a problem when it had never been used. 🤔 I’m pretty disappointed with this, to say the least. I too have had numerous sets and rigs which have worked flawlessly for many years. It remains to be seen what other issues the D-808 might offer up in the years ahead and how generally reliable it will be. It’s a nice, and somewhat interesting design; great value for money and a nice presentation, but construction wise it is no Sony, JRC etc. I guess you get what you pay for. 🙄🖖
Thanks for your comments. I've always said the D808 is low quality but has superb performance when it's working!
Sorry to see this Clint. I bought one of these after seeing your videos and it IS a great radio. My go to SW portable. Second only to the ICF2001D and followed by the DE1103 (non dsp) in my collection. It is really annoying when sockets breakdown like this. My Xiaomi Note 3 did the same too recently. May I express my thanks for your videos. 73s ps watch out for the snakes!
Thanks Jim. I'm hoping XHDATA will see this and send me a replacement lol. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the 'cobras'! 73! Clint
This fairly sux. I have this going on with my HP Probook 6550b. But I am at home.
Sending healing faith your way
Thanks Craig, I need it! 73! Clint
Clint, you said there was an electrical storm after you had been using the D-808. I'm thinking there might have been an electrical static discharge to the receiver and that might have fried a component, killing something on the audio board. You might have to wait until returning to the UK to get it fixed if that's the case. Just a thought...73's...Phil
You might be right Phil, but I won't know until I take a proper look when I get back to the UK. Thanks and 73! Clint
I'll have to keep an eye on mine, hopefully its an easy fix!
Yes, hopefully it is! 73! Clint
I think that’s a bummer mate, Sorry about that sir. I’m still gonna pull the trigger on it. I wouldn’t mess with it. I think your videos and reviews are top shelf and I would try to get it fixed or replaced if you can. Even if it’s out of warranty, Your well respected in this small community and maybe it would be in there best interest to pay you attention.
Hi there, thank you. I would still definitely buy one, maybe I'm just unlucky with mine. There's no doubt it's one of the best radios out there, in terms of sensitivity, maybe the best. Thanks again for your kind words. 73! Clint
Hi Clint, I'm sorry to hear that sad news. Really annoying. Fingers crossed that you can have this fixed or fix it yourself. If not, personnally I'd just order another D-808. 73, Matthias
Hi there Matthias, thank you very much. I'll have a go myself when I get back. 73! Clint
The telescopic antenna connection is another well known weak point on this radio, mine does not mute the loudspeaker with some headphone jacks
Thanks for your comments, Dave, 73
I got this radio and after 1 week the airband isn't working anymore. All other bands are still fine. Any solutions? Would be nice.
No idea - quality is rubbish even though performance is excellent - when working
If it's the Head-Phone jack, that's not a problem. That can happen to any radio. Try another jack-plug. I hope that you sort out the problem and enjoy your radio more years.
Thanks
How annoying but I guess still being relatively cheep you will buy another?
Thanks and yes, if XHDATA don't offer me a replacement, I will have to buy another one. 73! Clint
@@OxfordShortwaveLog oh I didn't think about getting a replacement...You should really so hope you do
I had a similar problem with an old Macbook. When you slide the headphone in it pushes between two wires/tabs that jumps the sound to the speaker breaking the circuit to the speaker. When you pull the headphone out, the two tabs touch and the sound goes to the speaker again. My Macbooks tabs stayed apart and no more sound from the speakers. Just headphones. I also noticed when you powered the radio on it beeped, does it have a buzzer on board or did that come from the speaker? FYI, I found your video while looking for an inside view of the D-808.
Hi Dominic, many thanks indeed for your comments. It does beep - so there must be a buzzer or something equivalent somewhere. Keep safe. 73s
is there any possible upgrade/replacement for the speaker diaphragm/driver? to improve the audio? The XHDATA doesn't sound very good on its original speaker.
There probably is but I've never had the time to look into it TBH
ok, thanks@@OxfordShortwaveLog
If you don't want to disconnect the internal speaker wires, you could just run a bypass wire on the circuit board Itself where the switch is. Be careful of that ribbon connector. they can tear easily.
Thanks for the tip! 73s, Clint
Have you checked the jack socket welds. indeed the speaker cut goes through there
Hi there, no I bought a new one and have never used it! 73s, Clint
It's a bit late but, can i ask about the diameter and the thickness of the speaker? I wan to try a better one on mine D-808... 70 or 75mm?
Hi there, I'm not sure - why don't you open yours up and measure it? It's very easy to do. 73s, Clint
@@OxfordShortwaveLog , hi, I'm trying to minimize openings to avoid breaking chinese plastic clips :) But i will, thx anyway. 73s :) And just did it: 76.8mm diameter and 21mm thick.
Make sure the Ohms value of your replacement is equal to the original ( not lower ) or you may blow your Audio Amp up.
Hi Clint, I don't know if you managed to fix the problem. I have a D-808 of which I was very happy, but overnight it turns out that the volume does not drop all the way! when the volume knob is turned all the way down. Perhaps it is a small component, an amplifier, .. If there was a diagram of the board, I would even risk investigating and trying to fix it, it is not acceptable to have to buy another complete radio! there shoull be technical support from the manufacturerI wish you luck! Greetings, Pedro.
Hi there Pedro, I share your feelings of frustration. After the many many videos I published using this radio, I heard nothing from the manufacturer when it failed. Terrible customer service in my opinion. I had no choice but to buy a new one. I hope you have more luck than me. 73s, Clint
@@OxfordShortwaveLog Clint, thanks for your report,. Yes,. Really a pity! not even to have a basic customer service because this is a great portable radio. I will try to do my best ,and if I discover "something" ... I will share by here ;-)
Thank you very much my friend. 73s
@@OxfordShortwaveLog Hi again Clint,.. Good news!,. I have managed to fix the problem I had with the volume of my xhdata D-808. I have finally been lucky! and I didn't have to buy another new radio hahaha! ;-) You can see (and share if you want) the solution here imgur.com/a/6FyabnP Cheers! and good SWListeners, Pedro.
IMO if you have headphones socket broken maybe there is a shortage and radio thinks that you are using headphones (without plugging them in) and cutting off all audio from the speaker. Worth to try to swap this headphones socket. All the best
Thanks for the advice. 73
As mentioned from a previous comment, it could just be bad solder connections.
Thanks John! 73s, Clint
Hello Can you please update If you had new or repaired radio and how it was working? today a lot of people want this radio and could be scared when they see this...
No it's still not working properly and still not fixed. I bought a new unit. 73s
@@OxfordShortwaveLog Hello thank you for reply. Anyway i ordered one so i will see if I have luck :D
هل وجدت حلا للمشكلة

How very true!!!
I've never had the 368 so I can't really comment. Hopefully someone else will...
the tyt 9800 has a similar fault . mine only works with the extension speaker . its a fault with the headphone socket . cheap and nasty component
replace the part
Yes maybe Ray. 73! Clint
ive had 3 of these radios with the fine tunig function stopped working completly! Contacted them in China & told me to get a refund. As I did very poor service!!!!
Yeah I know what you mean...good value when they're working though.
You might even just have a bad speaker. It doesn't happen often but it's always possible
Thanks again, appreciate your comments, 73s, Clint
The Electrical storm could've caused the problem .
Definitely...you could feel it in the air!
хрень какая то
Thank you! 73s
