    I got a 4x8' grow tent last spring, and grew all my seedlings in it. They grew so well, that I know I will need to start them later this year, so they don't get too large. I have had lettuce, cherry tomatoes, radishes, beans, and cucumbers almost all winter with the tent. It was especially nice picking a fresh salad with the big storm we had in Minnesota this past week. Thanks for your great content. I look forward to hearing more about your grow tent adventures.

      We have the same story!! I’ll also be starting my seedlings later. I’m also growing and eating lettuce, kale, spinach and herbs. My tomatoes are still growing. I’m also growing garlic, echinacea, calendula, camomile, lavender (trying!), lemon balm,
      oregano on the same rack as yours Scott. Any advice on growing lavender from seed?
      My 4x4 Mars Hydro tent is well made, works great and is beautiful! Great investment!
      Happy growing! ❤

    I love the spider farmer lighting I have an extremely large room-sized tent, but cant set it up now Ive converted the garage, but I am hatching plans for next year with a new solar setup and I will be able to run that in a shed so should be good. Great video Scott

    That tent is pretty versatile, was not sure if enough light would make it with a shelving unit. Now I am very interested.
    One could probably start a couple tomato plants in August and have ripe tomatoes all winter, that is my thinking!
    Thanks for showing this Scott! Stay Well!!!

      @@brianseybert2189 I want to put something together for next winter. It wouldn't a kit like Scott bought, so maybe some reflective mylar sheets attached to a shelving unit. I would want a 2x4 by 6' tall unit and Spyder Farmer doesn't make that size. The closest is a 5 ft tall. Mars Hydro has the right size for $140 just for the tent. So yeah. Looks like a DIY project. 😀

    I have 2 vipar spectra p4000 grow lights on my grow shelf which is 2x4 and 2 shelves. My lights are at 50% and hung 27inches above the shelf. Lights are on 12 to 12.5 hours a day. Just potted up some hot/superhot peppers today and the plants are only 3inches tall and vibrant after 5 weeks

    I like the idea of having 1 of these grow tents in the basement as a way to get the temps up. I move the seed starting and grow out to the main floor once seed starting really gets going but the onions get started much earlier than anything else. That is where the grow tent would be nice. Growing some basil, oregano, thyme over the winter in there would be good too.

    My onion seeds are up and doing well on my plastic shelf in the garage with lights and aluminum foil edges. Gardening indoors is such a challenge! And yes, they didn’t worry about my electric outlet needs for plant lights when they built the house!

    I got the exact same tent for a "different" kind of plant recently, but decided to use it for seeding our late summer veg instead. Here in CO, we've failed each year due to the scorching sun killing our seedlings off swiftly.

    Thanks for sharing the grow tent experience with us. I wish I had room for one. I like the mylar you have on the back of your regular shelves that I've seen in several videos - do you find it gives a lot of benefit? I have a very similar grow rack in my laundry room. And now I feel like I need to start some seeds 😉

    I’m surprised you started tomatoes already. I use to start around March 25th, but they get too big. It’s too warm in the house and they take off, last year had to up-pot all and to slow them down get them out to the greenhouse. I’m Z5a, frost 5/13 and I’m adding 2 weeks to that date to count back to start date. I plant out close to end of May. That should cover the hardening off week and the week of waiting for right time to plant out.
    I have too many varieties of tomatoes and peppers to up-pot. I grow extras for others also and that’s what I need to figure out is how many of each do I need. Trying a lot of different varieties of veg and flowers. When I checked the price of plants I will easily recoup my costs even if only half produce. Yikes! The plant costs I seen were crazy.
    Questions: I have white mildew/mold on cell packs. Any suggestions?
    First time Ever I have aphids. Any suggestions?
    Any experience growing Non Stop Begonias? They grow slow and are so tiny and not advancing very fast.
    I have fans going all day, lights I’m bumping up from 13 hrs to 14, the cell packs dry unevenly. I used Promix potting soil.
    The weird thing is the aphids are on artichokes, lemon basil, marjoram. They don’t both onions, rosemary, thyme or flowers.
    Using air layering cell packs for onions and will need to up-pot and think I will group in large pots.
    I’ve used premixed neem oil on the mildew and aphids lightly some improvement. House is about 72*F.
    Never had such problems before, but I’ve never grown lettuce successfully until this year and other new to me varieties.
    Thank you! Love the new videos.😅

      I started them for indoor growing in the tent and hydroponics setup. I'm still a month away from starting my tomatoes for outside. Allowing the surface to dry out can reduce mildew and mold. Neem oil is an option for aphids.

      Aphids .. I hate them.
      1. If most are on one or two leaves. Prune them out.
      2. Squish or brush them off.
      3. Spray with a mild soap mix.
      4. Good luck .. hopefully better than my gardens.

    Did your plants on the lower tray do ok? I'd like to do a similar set up with even more shelves as my tent is taller. Wondering if I need lights on each shelf.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  10 місяців тому +1

      They did. Once they were more than a few inches tall I shifted them to the floor so they could get more light. Extra lights on the shelves would help.

    Hi Scott . . . Thanks for the video. For clarification, are you just using the one set of grow lights even if you are going to have a tray on top and another below (i.e., so the upper tray would block the direct light to the bottom tray)? I have a very similar set up as you (in fact, I'm pretty sure I have the same shelving unit), but I've got lights for both shelves. Is this overkill? I don't have the spider tent, but mine otherwise looks similar to yours. Anyway, just curious if you think I can cut back on my grow tent lights.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, Gregg. I am using just the one light to see how well it works and I'll stagger trays to reduce shading. I can't guarantee the results, so to be sure, your idea for extra lighting is good.

    • @dustyflats3832
      @dustyflats3832 Рік тому +1

      I have same shelf unit and you will need lights on each level. I don’t have a grow tent, but the shiny sides won’t be enough.

    Hello Gardener Scott: I have been checking out pots to use to grow African violets in. On Amazon there seem to be a "zillion" varieties available, but all of them seem to be the "self watering" type. Have never found a discussion about the different pots one could use to grow seedlings and plants (of African violets).
    All of these versions of self watering pots seem to me to be quite expensive. If a person contemplates growing many African violets, the cost of a large number of these more expensive pots might be prohibitive. I seem to recall that your videos on "UA-cam" seem to mention just plain plastic pots with no special features, other than possibly some drainage holes in the bottom.
    Would you kindly address this question about what is a suitable pot for African violets? Thank you ever so much for your assistance in this.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  Рік тому +1

      Basic pots should be fine. I know gardeners who have grown them for years without self watering

      @@GardenerScott Oh, that is definitely good news to me. Thanks very much for answering my inquiry. Am just getting back into African violets and streptocarpus' after many years of having none. Trying to learn the ropes all over again. Being retired, I could never afford many of the self watering "jobbies".
      I seem to recall that I heard somewhere that self watering plants keep the plants continuously wet, not necessarily a good thing. With bottom watering, the soil should gradually dry out some and I am thinking that should be a good thing.
      Thanks again, Gardner Scott.
