Karen, I have been stitching for over 50 years and this was the best tip I have ever learned. I almost always only stitch with one thread over one and I’ve never found a good way to start my stitching using one thread. This was just genius!!! Thank you so much for this fabulous tip!!
I’m using 40 count linen and can’t pierce the fabric thread to make a pin stitch. I think I figured out how to do it by going up a hole, then down immediately to the right. Then I come up again immediately to the right of where I just went down, and making another teeny stitch by putting the needle back in the hole I went down in the first time. (I’m sure this is clear as mud!) It seems to be working. 🤞🏻I really love using this loop start and end using the single ply of floss and stitching over two linen threads. Thanks again for sharing these tips!
Kevin. I am so glad you figured out a way on 40ct. Actually i understood exactly what you were saying and would have suggested exactly that. If i remember. Correctly it has been several years but Vonna used that method of starting/ending her thread. Dont know if that video is still on her channel. It is always my pleasure to share things with this community and hopefully they are helpful. And i love hearing when they are. Thanks for your support and friendship
Great video. I put down my 25ct 1x1 because I just couldn't figure it out. This has given me the confidence to pick it back up and not worry about the ninja stitches! Thank you 😁
Thank you Karen for sharing how to do these stitches! I always go to your channel to 'fine tune' my stitching! You explain things so well. Happy Stitching back to you!
When you posted the loop start for one thread the last time , I tried it and love it. I use it for two treads as well on threads that are two short for loop thread the normal way. Genius.
Thanks for sharing this (and thank you Joyce). Using the loop start for a single thread has really transformed my HAED project as I can only work from the front on it as it is so big. Brilliant!
Aha!! I had to rewatch again because I was doing the infamous NINJA stitches and they were coming undone!! Well - I was forgetting to do the second loop before ending these! 😮 So just in case anyone wants to know - if you’re doing those isolated single stitches out in middle of nowhere, make sure you do the loop in hole 2 AND again in hole 3! If you don’t do that second loop to secure it, the ninja stitch can fall out. Thank goodness I rewatched this - I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong! 🤦♂️ Thanks again Karen! I think I need to watch this every so often just to enforce the steps in my brain. 😅
First time I have ever seen the Double Loop technique before. I usually just go up,through number and down through number two and snip it off after I get down with the stitch. That might be the old school way though. Lol. I will try this Double Loop technique though. Love your videos Karen.
Thank you so much! I'm doing a giant piece with all kinds of confetti from Scarlet Quince and almost all of my stitches are blended. This is SO helpful.
For the starting stitch, if you keep the tail going into hole 4 fairly short you can tuck it into the loop at two and pull it back under the fabric. You may have a line above the stitch, but this wont be a problem.
I know this is 3 years old, but I have 3 HAEDs that I'm working on (they're like Pringles lol), and the starts and stops for it with the single threads are so frustrating! The right half of my canvas is nothing but ends of the starts and stops. This is amazing. I just did it on aida. I can't wait to try it on lugana.
Sneeze! Hubby and I sneeze when eating chocolate! Don’t know if it is because of the chocolate itself or the chocolate fat. But we do it also while eating white chocolate….(just a side note.)
I tried that before and it resulted in a doubled top leg of the cross stitch. I didn't like that. Your reply puzzled my so I tried it again.... same result. Can you explain how you make this better laying stitch? Does yours have a double top leg?
Do your dark threads that are carried to the anchor show to the front of a lighter thread is used in those areas? For example, eyes on a light face. I feel I can see the black thread under the skin
@GallifreyFalls As Joyce said, most cross country stitchers like me will benefit on this method, but of course anyone can use it. I usually ended up with a single stitch on a clean area with nowhere to sew in, can't do ending pin stitch, and can't pierce the fabric. This is a very secure ending, and you will never worry that your 1-stitch ninja get undone anytime.
that is very true. more often than not I just leave a short tail and do a tacking stitch to hold the thread in place until I can stitch over it. i do agree to do both the loop and tack stitch is more work and not necessary. this video was done for those that wanted to try a loop ending (just for demo purposes only) thanks for the great question
Not rude at all. No worries. It was a great question and I appreciate your asking. Others may be wondering the same thing 😊hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving
This video is not in focus and is filmed from so far away it makes the video useless. You're camera is jumping around. If you can improve on those things and I think it would be a great video 😅

I knew of this stitch but had forgotten it, this has really helped me a lot. Thank you.

Fabulous! I've been using these techniques since yesterday. Another game changer! Thank you Karen for the video, and thank you Joyce for the idea!
I second that comment 👍👌

Thank you Karen for this video❣ Hope it helps lots of stitchers. ⚘🇳🇱⚘
Wow, how great is this? Tried it immediately and just love it. Thank you so much!
Joyce that is a fantastic way to end. I'm not sure about starting this way, will have to watch it again.

I love it! I tried it when joyce uploaded the method. Im using it since then 😊 thanks for a more detailed instructions 😘
Love this tutorial. Thank you.
Brilliant ! Thank you for this very helpfull explanation!
It must be great going to stitching groups .🥰
This is brilliant! Thank you for showing clear detailed examples. I’ve been using a pin stitch but this is amazing especially for 1over 1.
Thank you Karen! Thank you Joyce!
OH MY GOD this is what I need! So thankful to have found this! ☺️
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much Karen!!! I just make me enjoy my project again! I was so bored with a lot of confetti 😫🤩
Thank you for the tutorial. These are great tips!
Can't wait to try this! Thank you for sharing
Awesome just love your shortcuts.
Saving this for next time I’m using 1 strand! I really need to try this!
Thanks so much for sharing. Can’t wait to try it.

❤❤❤❤❤❤
Спасибо. Интересный способ закрепок. попробую на двойной нитке и на одиночках.
For the final loop, instead of goin back down in 3, I go down in 4 so my stitches lay better.
I tried that before and it resulted in a doubled top leg of the cross stitch. I didn't like that. Your reply puzzled my so I tried it again.... same result. Can you explain how you make this better laying stitch? Does yours have a double top leg?
Thank you so much for this video! I was in your LIVE yesterday and asked about it..I think I understand now!!! 😀
You are more than welcome. I am so glad it helped you
Thank you 🥰💖💖
Oh! Thank U!!!! Perfect!!!!
Brilliant 💕
Hello! I do not understand the tacking stitch when ending your stitching. Where are you hiding that in your stitched piece without it showing?
So small spot linen crosstich but you make so tidy and so good
What a blessing🙂
How can I find more about stitching diagonally? Thanks to both you and Joyce.
Rena. You can join “For the LOve of Diagonal Cross Stitching” group on Facebook Lots of help to be had there. Also check my videos here on UA-cam
Last bit not "in camera"
Could this be done with two strands. It is a great idea for making things neater
I've been told it does work with 2 strands. That was on 18ct
Yup, works great on 2 strands. Im currently doing it on 20ct
How great is this ,pity l am working with 3 threads yuk ,l cannot do this !
You should be able to...... Karen is working with 1 thread.
So essentially the last crossed stitch is your ending stitch. Am I right?
Do your dark threads that are carried to the anchor show to the front of a lighter thread is used in those areas? For example, eyes on a light face. I feel I can see the black thread under the skin
I do think it is best to avoid carrying a dark thread under a lighter thread there is always that possibility that it will show through.
can you do loop end with 2 strands? i can’t see tack stitch cuz your comments over it🙈
Can you use this method using 2 threads over 1?
Thank you for remaking the video!
Can I ask, why bother looping the last stitch if you're going to sew over it for a few stitches anyway?
For me it works on CC and you don't know when you are going to stitch over the tail. Just the tacker stitch may not be sufficient
Nice work from which country u belong please share
What kind and size of needle do you use ?
Porche i use a Logitech Brio
If you're going to end the loop end with a pin stitch, then why not just skip the loop part?
that is very true. more often than not I just leave a short tail and do a tacking stitch to hold the thread in place until I can stitch over it. i do agree to do both the loop and tack stitch is more work and not necessary. this video was done for those that wanted to try a loop ending (just for demo purposes only) thanks for the great question

Thank you for the feedback. Not all methods work for everyone. Hope you have a method that works well for you.
