talk about it being bored, years ago when i had my first gravely, a fellow at the machine shop said they bored the cylinders out and used a plymouth flathead car piston in the engines
I really enjoy your videos. You are a talented young man to have all of the knowledge you do. I am from the Midwest and I don't see any of the neat stuff that you come across to fix up. Keep up the great videos.😊
I've never seen anything like that before. It would be good if you could show us a closeup of the blade on that thing. Like I said, I've never seen one before. It seems to do a terrific job, but one thing is for sure: they could never sell anything like that today - way too exposed and dangerous!
20+ yrs qgo i saw an add in the paper for a rototiller. 35bucks on a friday night. sunday rolls around and i call she says yea she still has it. i go over to what looked like an estate sale, people walking in and out. she comes out and i ask "still have the roto tiller?" she says yes, and points down the driveway like i said people all walking past it. i didn't even know what it was but i could get 35 dollars out of my pocket fast enough. it came with the plow and the cultivator. the original manual too. the carb was rusted completely solid. i chipped the rust off and it's been running every year since then. the cultivator was worn out past the bearings both gearboxes you could see daylight past the seals. it works well but the tines are worn bad. the plow was worn also, so i bought one online. the old plow i rebuilt the plow blades or shares by cutting a lawnmower blade in half and welding it on the front side of 2 blades. to basically make the blow blade to factory size again., i'm in the process of welding the other 2 blades now. the price in 1957 sold in los angeles was 275 dollars. these are on of the last things built on this earth that were meant to last. i got some end play on the crank shaft of at least an eighth of inch or maybe even 1/4 of inch travel.. it still works great. it's an L-S model.
If you start in the center of the area to be plowed and go in initially tight but ever expanding loops, you won't have to take the plow out of gear out of gear and back up for each pass. You'll be able to stay in gear with the plow at the same angle and always move forward until eventually you reach the outer edge of the garden. Big time and gas saver.
What a strange machine. I wonder if the "plow" wears out like tiller tines? IF they do, does anyone make replacements or do you just look for another in someone's junk pile?

Nice work! Good video to show how to use the rotary plow properly. You don't find the deflector shield necessary, apparently? Good to see a young fellow adopting an old machine :D
That seems like it was pretty well advanced for 1949. Awesome machine !!
Sounds nice !!
Slot better machines than the ones running today!
You betcha!
Love hw u idol it been driving them 4 50 yrs now wood like 2 buy parts through u
Can’t beat a gravely with the rotary plow.
I like the Gravely low RPM, high torque engine.

That must've gave the thing a little more "oomf"! Not the first time I heard of guys using car pistons in a Gravely jug.

Thanks Eric!
Number one tiller on the market today.

Amazingly enough the new BCS tractors did manufacture a rotary plow attachment!

Always check the oil pressure under the oil cap to the pto clutch. Make sure the pto springs have a .020” gap between the coils.

That thing is awesome! Love the steel gear reduction wheels. Nice job on the exhaust too! Looks just like factory.
Thanks Josh! It's an animal of a tilling machine.....

Operated like a pro! Nice low engine speed and good control. Especially with no deflector shield.
I love the steel GRWs!
That is very cool bud, runs and works great! I love that tiller!
Very nice buddy! and its running great. Nice soil conditions there
Awesome Machine man, Really runs and works great!

Oh man does that machine run sweet. Great job.
It tills too. You are so lucky to find a gravely all the time? Someone has always bought it before I can get one.
I till by going forward then reverse it makes a even seed bed.
