I REALLY wanted to hate this bike | R1300GS first RIDE | R1300GS option 719

  • I finally got to ride the R1300GS option 719. I really did not want to like this bike. I was not too fond of the aesthetics. At some point, I felt betrayed by BMW. They took a classic look and paid zero tribute to the look that has evolved so far over many years.
    After a few minutes on this bike, it hit me like a ton of bricks why this bike was the next big thing. That engine... WOW. I can't say enough great things about BMW's efforts on this new bike.

    Official statement from BMW Motorrad
    Here is the official statement from BMW Motorrad on this topic (as of October 2023):
    "BMW Motorrad has decided to make a change to the maintenance schedule for the R 1200 and R 1250 models in the interest of customer satisfaction. During ongoing field observations, it has been determined that occasional damage may occur to the cardan shaft of the above models, which could affect the function of the drive. In individual cases, propulsion can be lost. These complaints occur to a greater extent in the R 1200 GS and R 1250 GS models as well as government vehicles in the series than in the road models. Against this background, a service campaign was decided on for these models in 2022, as part of which the cardan shaft will be replaced at 60,000 km and, at lower mileages, checked for previous damage to the universal joints using a specially developed test method.
    Cardan damage occurs extremely rarely in the road-oriented models of the R 1200 and 1250 families. The more moderate chassis geometry (lower articulation angle of the cardan shaft in the swingarm) as well as the usage profile without any terrain component ensures a significantly lower load level on the component. Nonetheless, BMW Motorrad has decided to adapt the maintenance schedule for all models in the interest of customer satisfaction over the service life and as a preventative quality measure.
    ,
    The mileage-related replacement of the cardan shaft is free of charge for customers over the entire life of the vehicle, even if the replacement limit has been reached several times and regardless of the vehicle's age. Depending on the country, affected customers with vehicles up to model year 2023 will either be given an insert for the operating instructions during their next visit to the workshop or sent directly with an information letter. From model year 2024, the maintenance plan is already included in the operating instructions; affected customers will no longer be informed separately.
    The replacement of the cardan shaft has also already been taken into account in the maintenance plan for the new R 1300 GS. In contrast to the R 1250 GS, where the cardan shaft is replaced at 60,000 km, the cardan is changed on the R 1300 GS at 80,000 km.
    The recommended (voluntary) inspection of the cardan every 20,000 km increases the workload during the inspection by 9 AW. With the voluntary inspection every 20,000 km, the customer is free to decide whether costs are incurred or not - it is not a mandatory increase in costs.
    It only affects the R 1200, R 1250 and 1300 models. Other series (R nineT, K 1600, etc.) are not affected."

    Free Drive shaft replacement is only for current 1250 and previous models, not for the new 1300 gs. From now on it’s considered as a peace of hardware that wears out and therefore the owner will have to replace it in due time like brake pads or oil or tyres.

    Nice review! I test ride one for 200 miles a few weeks ago here in Scotland and absolutely loved it. The headlight doesn’t bother me that much and I like the new design. I found the chassis stiffer and the suspension significantly better for me, it was just as relaxing and comfortable to ride as my 1250 and covered the ground quicker and more easily. I’ve ordered one for delivery in March!

    I'm with you on the looks and I also only buy my bikes "gently" used. I'm hoping the GSA version will somehow bring back the tough, rugged looks and that integrated in-the-cockpit feeling of the 1200/1250, though I'm afraid the headlight is here to stay. Maybe they'll find a more subtle way to integrate the radar front and back with the additional bodywork. A GSA with the new engine and weight-watchers program of the 1300 would be mighty tempting. Also having a real, separate brake light instead of the dual-function rear indicators would be nice. Never really desired more power from my 2018 GSA, but some weight loss would be a big benefit for the tight alpine switchbacks I encounter on tours.

    • @AmericanAbroad1
      @AmericanAbroad1  5 місяців тому +1

      I love it haha “weight watchers version” hahah.
      Yeah I couldn’t agree more. I’ll give it a few years and see how it evolves and probably snag a used one. Also gently used. I got my 2019 1250 from a dealer and the last owner was a pilot so he never rode it. Only 13,000km on the clock.
      Thanks for your comment

    Goose the throttle when you shift down so you match rpm’s of the two gears being meshed. Match the rpm’s goimg up, also. The bike has a certain angular momentum you should not ignore.

    Hello, American, I was at BMW this past Sunday and asked if the Adventure would come and he said maybe in December 2024. Regarding the headlight, from what I heard, it seems that they had to Center because of German legislation. Like you, what I like most about the GS1250 is what I hate about the 1300. I'm torn between the África Twin Adv and the GSA1250 Adv. I'm an on and off-road motorcycle tourism enthusiast.

    Compared to the outgoing model the 1300 looks like million bucks, no more random angular pieces everywhere, it's a consistent modern design and the lights will be the new face of the GS for the next 20 years. I really don't understand why the new design is so appaling to some people. It's not like new 900Gs that is a straight copy of the Honda cb500x and shares nothing with the rest of the GS lineup.

      For the 1300 the lights will be the face for sure, but remember, the 1300 is not replacing the 1250. It’s a new lineup. The 1250 has a 2024 model also.
      So the original look of the GS will live on in the 1250.

    • @simulacrae
      @simulacrae 5 місяців тому +2

      @@AmericanAbroad1 why would they keep the 1250 going? It's literally throwing money into the ocean to keep a production line open for a lesser bike. Yes the 1250 ADVENTURE might stay on for a while but not the common 1250. And that will most likely become the 1300GSA in 2025.
      BMW didn't keep the 1150 around after the 1200 came out, and the 1200 went away when the 1250 arrived.
