I’m so glad you read Rebecca! It’s one of my favorite books, I know you would love it. For me it’s more like Jane Eyre than Wuthering Heights, it’s a kind of Bluebeard story and the gloomy atmosphere of the big house (Manderley) reminds me of Thornfield Hall also with a “dead wife” mystery. Two of my favorite books of all times

Winter Library sounds like a perfect candle for now or JAN. I have been apprehensive about reading Rachel. Now that you are reading it I feel better. Kind of like when you were a kid and said " you go first!" HA HA!! You look beautiful Alice. I love that "maroon" color on you. Love your blouse collar.🙂 Thanks.

OH MY GOD ITS HAPPENING AND YOU LOVED IT!! I also didn't see the twist coming, i felt so silly 😂
YES TO MORE DU MAURIER! "My Cousin Rachel" is really good but I felt like it was a fever dream for me, and "Frenchman's Creek" I also loved coz I like a main character that can be selfish and also PIRATES. Her short story collections are solid IMO, "The Birds: Short Stories" has some amazingly creepy writing in it. i also recommend getting them in the same edition you have Rebecca in coz they all look beautiful especially together on a shelf LOL

I'm glad you liked Rebecca, I always thought you would as it was really ahead of its time when it comes to storytelling. I also really really love The Birds (also made into a movie by Hitchcock but in my opinion the movie couldn't live up to the novella) and Don't look now. This is where I truly fell for du Maurier ♥

Several novels, Gone With The Wind, Rebecca, and Jane Eyre feature young women who are so innocent in the beginning. Through the course of events in the novel they mature to become grown women. I like this trope. Their innocence in the beginning is what makes them attractive and the readers root for them. You should see the movie version of Rebecca with Joan Fontaine as the new Mrs. DeWinter with Laurence Olivier as Max. And the creepy Mrs. Danvers. Now you have to read My Cousin Rachel.

I loved that book! The ending completely made up for the slower beginning. The tension really builds with all of the questions that you ask yourself, especially because the narrator is a naive young woman caught up in a messy history.

So glad you finally read it and loved it. I've read it a few times and am a big Du Maurier fan. I also love the different views of the book - I felt exactly the same as you the first time I read it, just going through enjoying it and wanting to know what happened. Then when I read it again I started thinking about how it's done and how we feel the way we do, and of course we never hear from Rebecca herself. We only get our narrator's view of her, and whatever she reports of other people saying about her. And somehow Du Maurier has us at the end thinking it's totally reasonable to support what Maxim did and how the narrator helps him cover it up. And yet... it's horrific. It's not a love story, to me, when looked at that way. We have no real idea of what Maxim and Rebecca's relationship was like, except for what he says (and what her cousin says). We don't know if he's lying to us, and we go along with the fact that Rebecca "provoked" him, which isn't a reasonable viewpoint at all. And the narrator tells us what happened and instead of finding this out and being terrified of Maxim, she colludes with him and convinces herself (and us) that Rebecca was the problem. I think it's absolute misogyny. And Du Maurier is so good because the narrator convinces herself it's not Maxim who is the issue and we go along with it. Until we step back and think about it again.
There's a book called Rebecca's Tale by Sally Beauman which reimagines the story from Rebecca's point of view. The whole thing is a brilliant demonstration of perspectives, I guess, and who gets to tell the story and who doesn't.
I think if you like this maybe go My Cousin Rachel next. It has similar atmosphere and not really knowing what's true and what isn't. Although I love Frenchman's Creek because it has a pirate and a woman escaping her responsibilities. And The House on the Strand which is Du Maurier doing sci fi!
As an aside, I love that it has never occurred to me that "fancy dress party" is a UK thing, but of course, in American films it's always called a costume party! I love weird language differences.

Rebecca is so good.. One of my favourite books. I love how this was wrote.. Rebecca has such an influence over all of the character's even after she was gone.. She was so horrible to Maxim.. which we find out in Maxims confession to his wife. Du Maurier's twists and turns are wonderful.. It's my perfect story.. It's a slow suspese gothic story. The main character ( the narrator) was an orphan, her parents both died close to each other from influenza.. which is why Maxim asks her to go with him. ✨

The video was a lot of fun to watch!😊
I finished Rebecca in October and sadly, I was a bit disappointed.
The biggest problem is that I saw the musical two years ago and I could remember more of it than I thought.
I was sitting there, reading the book, and waiting (way too long) for all the interesting things to start happening. The pacing was not my thing and the musical made the story more enjoyable for me. But I do like what Rebecca achieves theme-wise. (Also... the main protagonist made me quite angry a lot of the time, even if I can understand her behavior sometimes - but not really that she accepts everything happening in the book.)

Very deep, detailed and very interesting analysis of the book, thank you!
I'm reading two books by Daphne Du Maurier: The Scapegoat and Rule Britannia.
And... I would also like to thank you for this informative and interesting video, because it really is, everything about it is beautiful: your image, the book review, the unpacking of the candles. Moreover, I think I even smelled them...
But, to be honest, I really want to share what happened in our city of Sumy last week.
I understand that you do not need this, but still I think that people should know what is happening practically in Europe in the 21st century.
Last Sunday evening, the Russian occupiers hit a residential area with a ballistic missile. 12 civilians were killed, including 2 children. 89 people were injured, including 11 children. Children's fingers were torn off, some had their arms torn off.
On Friday morning, the Russian army attacked residential buildings with Shahed-type drones loaded with shrapnel. As a result, two civilians were killed and 12 were injured.
As I have written before, we are living in terror, but we are not giving up.
Your video allows me not only to immerse myself in the analysis of the book, but also to feel a normal human reaction.
Thank you so much for the video and for the wonderful image you create!

It is said that the book is sort of a Jane Eyre retelling. And I can see that too. Glad you loved it and that it didn't disappoint. If you loved the book, also check out the Alfred Hitchcock adaptation. It is old and in black & white, but still good and very creepy.
Oh, and if you like this one, maybe My Cousin Rachel is the one to pick up next. I've only read 3 by her, and I'm afraid you've read the best. But My Cousin Rachel was good too.

So this what I love about Rebecca - for me, we hear that viewpoint from the narrator, but as a reader, the question is always what's the truth? Maxim is probably not being entirely truthful, if at all, and the narrator, if she's going to stay with him, has to convince herself he is a good man. I don't think Du Maurier says he is. I certainly don't think he is, and I think the narrator is pretty awful too. But that makes the book more interesting to me.

You do have to concentrate on a Daphne Du Maurier book as the writing is quite intense but it is so atmospheric - she creates atmosphere really well which is why I think Rebecca is so popular, but for me the storyline isn’t as engaging as some of her other books - Jamaica Inn is my favourite so far, followed by My Cousin Rachael

So, Rebecca was very controversial because Du Maurier was accused of having plagiarized the plot from not just one but two authors. Some people say she was cleared, but actually, the courts just declined to try the case. I'd be interested in you reading the other stories and hearing what you think about the claims.
