I appreciate this review because I'm at the point where I've had my 00-DB for 8 years, and I'm looking around at Dreadnoughts. When I hear the D-18, it sounds more like what I want to play because of the brightness. When I watched this video, I draw a parallel to the difference between FM and HD radio - when you hear FM (OO-DB), it sounds great, but when the HD radio kicks in (D-18), it brings out a level of clarity you didn't know existed before. Pretty cool.
Thank you! That's a really good comparison. The 00-DB has that sweet "old" sound. There is almost nothing comparable to Dreadnought sounds, but I ended up selling both of those guitars, I think the 000 is the sweet spot for me for my forever guitar :-)
The D 18 did not disappoint, it was great.! The JT DB was very good, but would be hard pressed against the D 18 as in it would be great in finger picking and has a nice voice. 2 different tools for 2 different jobs.!
Hey. Sorry. I never saw that comment. They are the white button tuners from waverly. There are also ones from other brands that are less expensive such as kluson but you’d ruin the Martin look a bit as they’re not open back :-)
I have an Alvarez blues. I like the sound of both your guitars. The dreadnought sounds more like "treble" and the parlor sounds more "bass". Immediately I liked the dreadnought, then I heard the parlor and my ear prefers the bass sound of that one. So, if I only had the funds for one, I'd take the parlor.
Volume on both guitars are similar….I think I like the 00-DB best I own a 2016 custom shop Gibson Nick Lucas Brazilian Rosewood that because of the deeper body the volume is very loud too
I really should get a D-18 with an ambertone top like this one. The D-18 is one of my favorite guitars sound-wise, but I've never really liked the super-simple aesthetics of the normal one.
Thanks. I don’t have either of those two guitars anymore, having thought for long that I needed something in between so I got a 000-15m. But I have recently started to play my Yamaha FG-180 a lot which is also a dreadnought!
This just reinforced that I want a d18. I just wish they made them like they used to. You know how the hd28 is the counterpart to the modern day d18, same bracing, yet the hd was what the d28 was originally in all it's glory, they need to re release the old d18 with straight bracing as the counterpart to the straight braced modern d28.
Nice playing. The 00 sounds a little warmer being all mahogany. You must be in Detroit with the Pistons hat and fireplace going. Keep those guitars humidified this winter so they don't crack.
Funny, I have both guitars (even the same ambertone on the D18). Nice job comparing them. My D18 has a superior rich sound compared to my 00-DB, in my opinion. But, I like the 00-DB for sitting on the couch and playing. If I could only keep one, it would be the D18 for sure.
Hi. So sorry I never responded. I used daddario nickel bronze balanced tension 12s. Still do to this very day. IMHO the best sounding strings out there.
That Jeff Tweedy guitar is the "ONE" ! Dred sound in a small package. 👍👍

This D-18 was made for you. Happy new year.

Nice comparison. Where can I get those white tuners?

Thank you for playing some hard strumming music on the Jeff tweedy. All the other demos are finger picking.
Thanks! that's partly why I did it :-) Maybe I'll do more in the future...

The Ambertone is killer gorgeous!
I love dreadnought

Unscalloped bracing all the way. That’s why I love my 000-15m
What is the melody you are playing at 4:12 ?
Hi Chris. It's just a little lick i came up with for our Cover of "Broken Vessels" : ua-cam.com/video/edZCedjAXAU/v-deo.html

Hi Brian! Thanks for the comment. I agree! Actually I live in Switzerland but my heart is stuck in Michigan as my wife is from there!

@@Klemmytime Hi Mark. I completely agree!
Of course I'm a petite gal so the Tweedy is my choice. If I could handle the dred, I'd get that......or both ! 😅
I like the sound of the little dark one a little better. They both sound good though.. But if I played them, neither would sound good.
Which strings are you using on the 00db?
Hi. So sorry I never responded. I used daddario nickel bronze balanced tension 12s. Still do to this very day. IMHO the best sounding strings out there.
Tweedy for me, but I think the dreadnaught better suits your playing style.
I agree. I actually ended up selling both and instead now own a Martin 000-15m and a vintage Yamaha FG-180
