Have you looked at all into Phillipe Karl and his methods? The idea of lifting the bit in the mouth and having the horse chew and push forward and reach. I have ridden several horses similar to her- my current Greye horse (his name and his color) curls up and stiffens in the back. Very anxious horse. The PK method works great for him. I learned about it years ago when I took on a VERY anxious, tense horse that had been abused? He would curl and rush and then explode. With that method I found keeping his shoulders (thoracic sling really) up as he reached was a game changer. He went on to do quite high level training despite being older and having lots of baggage. Just a thought. I like having many different ways of doing things. 😊

No never heard of him but will definitely have a Google and read about his methods.
I agree great to look at many different ways, one thing this mare is teaching me is to look at different approaches.
      Thank you ☺️

My horse also does the tongue thing when stressed. He's not ridden.

Well I have nothing useful to sugges here, but I really can relate on the stop start with the horses this year. On the plus side I'm sure we are both learning a lot through all this 😂
Just a thought, and I'm not trying to suggest ill of people, but I wonder if something happened to her when she went away to be backed? I know she's done herself a few mischiefs at home but I can't understand why she is why she is.

Oh, I just got to the part of the video where you also wondered that 🤔

I do wonder I really do. Something doesn’t add up.

@@EJMEQUESTRIAN and they'd never tell you if something did happen, that's the worst bit 😔

Do English bits have a cricket? My horse can ride English and western and he loves a western bit with a cricket and leverage. He seems to prefer it over a sniffle even with a dog bone.

I had to look up what a cricket was in a bit 😄, yes we do have bits with a cricket, like a barrel? It’s a good shout, so will give it a try. Thanks

Hi I am having similar issues with my mare and her mouth - I haven't fixed it but she is now in a Micklem bridle and a level 3 myler eggbut for more tongue room and she has improved quite a bit - its hard keep trying everything but keep perservering you will get there. With the ridden work would it be an option to stay in walk to help build her confidence but maybe do walk polework and obstacles to keep her mind busy?

That’s interesting because I was looking at a Myler style bit and wondering if the shape might be something that would suit her.
I’m not keen to do any ridden pole work with her currently as the few times she’s decked me heavily there was always a pole involved. Thanks for the bit suggestion 😃

@@EJMEQUESTRIAN above is level 2 - this worked well too and more common than level 3 so you may get one easier

I don't have anything helpful to suggest, you have way more experience than me. At times my horse shows tension in his mouth, curling back with his neck and his lips and showing his teeth. He can then sometimes go absolutely beautifully, take the contact, beautifully forward and responsive, and seem to enjoy the work, but I am not sure what makes the switch from fussy boy to happy working pony. There is some element of my confidence in there.

I have a clients horse that sometimes lip curls and shows their teeth.
I agree confidence definitely plays a part.
If only we could know what they were thinking and how they were feeling. 🙂
