On assembling the door face boards, I believe you would have been better served with using 4-each Pipe clamps to hold the board tight to each other before screwing them onto the door frame. They would as you know shrink with age. i do like how you put foam between the cross braces. Buuuut, the Faux exterior hinges look weird. If it were mine I would take them off since they are non-functional and make the outside of the door face look too busy, what with the Iron clovo's installed. And since this is a rural cabin with an elevated porch, why not have the door swing outward. It would make for a far more secure cabin against a Bear trying to "Push it in". Another trick to keep Bears away is to take scrape Plywood and but 2-1/2 screws randomly through the face and lay these points up under the windows and door while your away.
Not a record, in the 1980s we use 4x6x8' to make a 6" thick door... upstate NY, in the finger lakes, used all thread to squeeze it together then we squared it with a plain, I guess, we wanted the door as thick as the walls as we could... Which was 8"ish round lumber, I never liked that the door swung inward. But grandpa was worried about getting snowed in. The other benefit to it swinging inside was the door was so heavy, he put a wheel on the end to hold up the weight. I will bet money people have made thicker, we wanted it so no one could chop thru it to break in when we were not there most of the year. I do admit your door is better looking, we used home made hardware to make these massive deadbolts

Looking good! The original iron heads on old doors where riveted nails going clean through to the other side and peened over both ways. They held the door together - thus there were so many of them - a multi layer door being far stronger and fire resistant.
Exactly. We'll be using 4 to 5 of those 2' strap hinges on the inside of the door, securely fastened with heavy duty wood screws. That'll do the trick. :)
@@TheOutsiderCabin it would be better (engineering wise) that you passed coach bolts through from the outside, so that you are not depending on compression only of woodscrews and trying cope with that weight. Bolts passing right the way through, would/will give Doweling effect to carry the weight..... imho

Everyone should have a tire repair kit in their vehicle. But for anyone off roading, they are required. Multiple ways to patch a puncture and multiple ways to get air into it. Worst case, leave the screw in the tire. The door looks great by the way. The cabin is really coming together. Already has some character!
Damn... that is a helluva door. As someone who is a tad OCD, I appreciated the overbuilt quality of the entire project. Ive watched every video after just stumbled upon one video by accident
Our Grandfather built a very think and heavy (external) door's on our cabin, his reason was to keep bears out, they ripped through a 3" door.. He built them out of 3 layers of 2 x 4's out side's vertical the middle horizontal, they were all glued and pegged together with half inch dole rods, and they are very very heavy there are 5 heavy duty hinges with 5" screws.. he also built very strong storm shutters, that were almost 3" thick with metal bands strapped around them.. I replaced those doors a few years ago, I used a heavy steel door and put 1/4" wood paneling over them, to give it a rustic wood look.. My wife & I both love your channel.. Be Blessed...
You are building more than a cabin. The sentimental value you enforce with your dad speaks volumes . It is so amazingly beautiful to see you two working together and the craftsmanship is amazing. The cabin looks a million bucks. Thank you for this beautiful video. Good quality image and you explain so clearly step by step what you are doing until you finish the job. Amazing. Thank you . Jose from Melbourne . Australia.
The iron nails you used were actually just nails in the olden days, with a wide head to prevent them from sinking into the wood from the front, and they were longer than the thickness of the door so that they stuck through and were then bent back on the backside to prevent anyone from pulling them out. There are videos out here that show you how it is done if I didn't manage to explain it well. What you have there is just a prop to make the door look awesome, and you have surely accomplished that;) Great job guys! Appreciate the content!
@@TimBielawa no dead asadoor nail is referring to coubtersunk nails. thoseold iron rivets on the old doors are burned on and peened on the other side. they hold the layers of boards togeather which meant therewas layers with grain going both ways in the door.. making it stronger

Just as a note of precaution: Be careful where you place the brush and rags that you use to apply Linseed oil; they have been known to spontaneously combust. The door looks fantastic!
@@TheOutsiderCabin for future builds, there are three naturally drying oils (linseed, tung, walnut), tung and walnut don’t spontaneously combust…. Ever…. If you still want to use linseed, than get the raw oil as it doesn’t have the Japanese (chemical) driers in it like what you buy in the cans, and is much less likely to combust spontaneously… Also, historically, certain other things have been mixed with drying oils to make them seal wood better, pine tar and turpentine (turpentine was used to thin the mixture and get it deep into the wood instead of just sitting on top)especially…. they even used to use them to protect the wood in the old fishing fleets. Mix the oil, pine tar, and pine turpentine, then slowly heat to a boil and use warm to seal the wood….
YESSS I used penofin oil on my deck. Worked well after dark and dropped two rags. The next day I forgot to go double check and wasn't home much of the hot sunny day. Luckily my neighbor happened to be in her yard and noticed the flames.

Hope your wife is fine and I'm keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Stay safe, be careful, take it easy and keep dry and cool. Til your next video, later my friend.
I could live in that year round, no problem. Remember when you trim the door to fit, that on the latch side to cut it at angle so the swing doesn't hit and drag on the jam. It will be even more pronounced with a door that thick.
Your doors opening inwards I'm guessing? The problem you may have is the gap will need to be bigger on the outside to accommodate the leading edge cut. Something to bare in mind. But great job.
In Europe, during Medieval times, the claveaus were made to go through the doors and werbe bent over on the interiors of each door. A 7 or 8 inch claveau was required to go through the door. Each spike was hand forged by tan iron smith. Very expensive to have that many. The uuse was for protection by breaking through. Two very heavy duty pieces of wood were slid in on iron trestles, each having a trestle on either side, thereby giving even more protection fron break-ins. Keep up the great content. 😎😎
The claveaus are also referred to as door nails. They were considered a sign of wealth due to their cost. The were bent over, or “deadened” on the inside so they could not be easily removed. Hence the term “deader than a door nail “

I love the door! You built it & that’s a great completed look! I hate when ppl build a whole cabin then put a store bought regular home door on it! Makes no sense!
I've heard that in ancient Mesopotamia, the door was the most valuable part of most homes, because it was built from imported cedar. Congrats on your door, and your whole cabin, for that matter.
Mesopotamia is the basis of architecture. We didn t invent much since this rising up of civilisation. And building comfortable homes. Today new age make me laugh re discovering all what was current recepts of "good building". And they show it as "modern environmentalist skills".! "sustainable technics" bla bla bla. Except furnitures they invented everything. (they just began to make very simole coffers... To keep safe their cuneiform tablets where they archived their worthies by very first writing.. Counting).
@@johnssmith4005 in Irak and Iran they had what we call "cedar of lebanon". It s during roman domination with dvt of trade by ships that this tree was used in europe too.

You need to invest in a plug kit for your tires when way out there! I keep one on my 4 wheeler for that reason. Don't worry about the tractor as much, I don't get too far away from home or a pickup when I am using it. Also grab you some cutoff disks for your grinder, they would zip through the straps much faster than a grinding wheel. Wishing you and your family the best. Praying for your misses health to improve so she can run circles around you!
Maple has almost zero rot resistance. Not a good choice for an exterior threshold - especially a board that has already begun to spalt (rot). White oak, black walnut, black locust or some other rot resistant wood should have been used. Even cedar would have been better than that maple. Maple is very durable, but is strictly an indoor wood.
Hi Planet, you are right, however there are some mitigating factors! Because of roof overhang and the shelter of the surrounding trees, no rain even torrential ones with strong winds, don't get the sill wet. As well the sill can easily be replaced. The reason maple was chosen is be cause it is its resistance to wear. Cedar is a good choice for resistance to damp conditions but would wear quickly. Cheers Have a great day!
@@senioroutsider2975 Still the wrong wood completely, and will rot rapidly regardless of the overhangs. Maple should never be used or exterior work period. The correct woods like black locust have more résistance to wear and are basically waterproof.
Absolutely amazing door you and your dad creared, I hope your wife is doing well and still praying for her and she has a amazing husband. Take care my friends stay safe god bless
I'm actually not sure...🤔 I believe the insulation we used has an R value of 8, but it doesn't span the whole door... It also occurs to me that an inch of wood has a general R value of 1.25...is that right? So our door might have a rough R value of 10-12. 🤷♂️

Bolts passing right the way through, would/will give Doweling effect to carry the weight..... imho
The Door ..... first thing a visitor focuses on from afar and then up close setting the state of mind about whats inside ..... A beautiful door of character .... I cant wait to join you all at your first Christmas at the cabin and God bless and keep you too , friend.
Beautiful, strong door!! Pretty soon you’ll be working on the interior - can’t wait! ❤️❤️
The Outsider will become the insider

That door is AMAZING! The whole cabin is!! I've watched since the boulders were selected and I love every minute of it. God bless you and your family.
Hello Rhonda how is the weather conditions over there.???
Such a blessing you are able to spend so much quality time with your dad. Impressive, quality work. Can't wait till the next post.
Oh wow, just beautiful. That door is a masterpiece. God bless!!!
Hence the saying “dead as a doornail”. If they were removed they were basically broken.
Clinch nails.
@@TimBielawa no dead asadoor nail is referring to coubtersunk nails. thoseold iron rivets on the old doors are burned on and peened on the other side. they hold the layers of boards togeather which meant therewas layers with grain going both ways in the door.. making it stronger
I bet your just the life of the party every where you go MC Armoury .
The nails are crimped over to help the horses that might kick, it from falling apart
This cabin is simply outstanding!!! I really liked how you never rush through with anything and did your research on everything. Well done and keep up the great work with your father together as he is simply amazing too! Much respect to you and your family and God Bless.🥰
Just as a note of precaution: Be careful where you place the brush and rags that you use to apply Linseed oil; they have been known to spontaneously combust. The door looks fantastic!
Great advice! ...and as a matter of fact, I left all the rags and brushes outside, away from the cabin for that reason.
I’m a finish carpenter as well, very impressive job Men! Outstanding!
@@TheOutsiderCabin for future builds, there are three naturally drying oils (linseed, tung, walnut), tung and walnut don’t spontaneously combust…. Ever…. If you still want to use linseed, than get the raw oil as it doesn’t have the Japanese (chemical) driers in it like what you buy in the cans, and is much less likely to combust spontaneously…
Also, historically, certain other things have been mixed with drying oils to make them seal wood better, pine tar and turpentine (turpentine was used to thin the mixture and get it deep into the wood instead of just sitting on top)especially…. they even used to use them to protect the wood in the old fishing fleets.
I have been watching your cabin build since the beginning. Thank you for the many hours of interest and enjoyment. It blows my mind when I think about your use of local trees to make your cabin. It is awesome. Thank you and God Bless.
The cabin looks amazing can't wait to see how you finish it up inside...

Cabins is looking really good, glad to see your dad still working with you I'm still praying for your wife.
I have been so bummed that you haven’t had a new video lately. The wait was worth it as the front door is gorgeous, beautiful and perfect! This is the best Log Cabin by far! Sorry for your tractor tire! 😥
I like to rustic look on the door👏everything is looking awesome 👏
That door looks killer guys !!!.... always a good Saturday when the Outsider notification comes up !!...Hello there Sr !.... lookin great on all thos close ups !!... well dun guys !!.... stay healthy from Wisconsin
The Outsider is one of my favorite channels. I enjoy watching the precision of your work. True craftsmanship. It's obvious you get your skills from your dad. It's great to see you working together. The door looks amazing! Strong and sturdy. Looking forward to the next episode. Until then, take care and God Bless.
That door really adds a nice touch to a already awesome looking cabin that's like putting the cherry on top nice job !
Even with the tire leaking you still went for the drive away shot. I respect the dedication
Your dad and yourself are well on the way to having a really good looking cabin and solid as a rock. Also I have a friend of mine is a roofer and he has a good size magnet that he uses to clean up roofing nails when they finish a job and he says it works really good. That might save you having to change a tire.
Wow !! Are you kidding me. this build is thing of absolute genius. Beautiful !!!! Gawd I'd love to have a build from the two of you.. Your grandson is top-notch.. Most Respectfully !
adventure in the forest is very fun by always keeping the forest beauty to be sustainable and not damage but make it comfortable to live in and beautiful. thank you sher
You can’t say that _you_ didn’t change the Big Bad Wolf’s line in the nursery rhyme:
_“… I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow…wwhoa whoa whoa - what is that? Medieval wood? Look at the craftsmanship. Dang…little me sit down here and rethink this approach.”_ 😂
Ahahahaha, hilarious AND true!! That's an amazing door!!! Love it!!
Lol. Love your narative there about that big bad wolf.
Thanks for sharing that. A good laugh is always a good way to start a day.
God bless
You and dad did a fantastic job of building the door, absolutely gorgeous! Working great together and doing wonderfully on all your projects. Hope your wife is fine and I'm keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Stay safe, be careful, take it easy and keep dry and cool. Til your next video, later my friend.
That thickness of timber will certainly give good insulation against your cold winters.
Was so happy to see another episode posted by you.....it made my day!!Sending continued prayers for your wife and hoping she is doing well.
Hello Diane how is the weather conditions over there???
That door is amazing, great job to the two of you.
I could live in that year round, no problem. Remember when you trim the door to fit, that on the latch side to cut it at angle so the swing doesn't hit and drag on the jam. It will be even more pronounced with a door that thick.
I've been considering doing just that. 👍🙂 Thanks for the suggestion!
Your doors opening inwards I'm guessing? The problem you may have is the gap will need to be bigger on the outside to accommodate the leading edge cut. Something to bare in mind. But great job.
beautiful see working father and son together with this harmony, well done!
That is one impressive door! Guaranteed to keep any bear or marauder at bay! Well done
l love the door you are both true craftsmen, it is always a pleasure to watch you build. God bless your whole family.
The knowledge between these two is got to be awesome .
Door 🚪 looks Amazing 😉👍
We can't find words to express the most amazing door ever. well done

It really complements the Cabin. Outsider Sr. Many many tks for letting me know that you are going to be on all the upcoming videos. You sure pull your weight working on the Cabin. Hats off and well done to you 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Delighted to see you Sylvia

I love the door! You built it & that’s a great completed look! I hate when ppl build a whole cabin then put a store bought regular home door on it! Makes no sense!

Anyway, thanks for the kind comment. 🙂👍

That’s an amazing door.
Beautiful and well built door, just like everything you and your Dad do. King Arthur would be proud! Well done my friends.
I've heard that in ancient Mesopotamia, the door was the most valuable part of most homes, because it was built from imported cedar. Congrats on your door, and your whole cabin, for that matter.
Cedar from Lebanon
The look of the door to the cabin is perfect!

WOW!! Absolutely LOVE the door brother! Blessings to you and your family today!
Maple is very durable, but is strictly an indoor wood.
you are correct
Hi Planet, you are right, however there are some mitigating factors! Because of roof overhang and the shelter of the surrounding trees, no rain even torrential ones with strong winds, don't get the sill wet. As well the sill can easily be replaced. The reason maple was chosen is be cause it is its resistance to wear. Cedar is a good choice for resistance to damp conditions but would wear quickly. Cheers Have a great day!
@@darrellcaruk8880 See above reply to Planet Mojo. Cheers!
@@senioroutsider2975 Still the wrong wood completely, and will rot rapidly regardless of the overhangs. Maple should never be used or exterior work period. The correct woods like black locust have more résistance to wear and are basically waterproof.
Quite correct. Maple is one of the worst exterior woods! Even with finish on it it will rot very quickly!
Absolutely amazing door you and your dad creared, I hope your wife is doing well and still praying for her and she has a amazing husband. Take care my friends stay safe god bless
Any idea what the R factor is on that masterpiece! I would imagine it would be pretty substantial .
I'm actually not sure...🤔 I believe the insulation we used has an R value of 8, but it doesn't span the whole door... It also occurs to me that an inch of wood has a general R value of 1.25...is that right? So our door might have a rough R value of 10-12. 🤷♂️
You are doing a great job but you are getting too commercial
