@@CaptainCool16 You clearly weren't around when Harrisburg looked like "The Day After". Steve Reed did much good for Harrisburg; making it one of the best cities in the country.
Classic! The reporter in the first clip is Nora Muchaninc and left the dump of Harrisburg and works at ABC Channel 6 in Philadelphia now. I was at Merriweather just before this for the classic lightning show but missed this one. My brother was here and said it was really cool being on the island. Funny seeing the old purple :RIT" dye shirts with the AOXOMOXOA style writing on them. That was my first tie-dye ever. I also have that painter's hat that one dude is wearing in my attic somewhere.
WOW....I can't thank you enough for digging this up and posting it. The memories came flooding and I even got a little lump in my throat.... "Where does the time go?"
Remember it well. The Dead Started slow that show. ZZ was great there. Best one on city island I saw was Stevie Ray! Yes & Asia were good too. I Rented a camera for the 84 dead show & Someone still has the tape! lol JJ
Very burnt out by the time we made it to Harrisburg, After SPAC and two amazing nights at Merriweather, it was great to have some much room at a show. We were taping, so we had to make our way in front of the Soundboard, to this day one of the best sounding tapes I ever made. In 84’ we stayed across the river at the Hilton which had a bar that had portholes with a view into the swimming pool much more fun that night, the first show of 7 instead of the end of the tour. Thanks again voodoonola
Yep I was there as well. Drove from Charlotte with my pal Cary (R.I.P.) to Merriweather, day off at Ocean City, MD and then on to Harrisburg. We were hanging next to the river and I'm sipping a beer. Cop comes over and I get tensed up and he simply asks me to put the can in the trash cause I'm not allowed to drink in public. Hell the mayor proclaimed it Grateful Dead Day! I wish I still had that newspaper. Was walking or really creeping back across the bridge and it was packed. These guys jammed in front of Cary and I were riffing on Monty Python skits the whole way across and we were laughing like hell! Good shows. Good times.
I lived in Charlotte (another popular GD concert location), and was visiting my grandmother on 10th street, in New Cumberland Penna, when this was on the news. Every summer in the early 80s, I spent 45 days in the Mechanicsburg area. Didn't get to see the GD till 1990 Charlotte & Greensboro, although I went to the parking lot before a Charlotte show in like 1987ish.
2:39 The blond haired guy on the unicycle is my old friend Lonnie Rickerman from Landenberg PA. I may be in this video somewhere. I was on City Island for the GD in 1983 and 1984.
I spotted my friend Howie and Doug at the 2'25" moment, thanks. I also remember the great french fries at this show which I saw in the fade out right at the end of the video. Thanks for the post.
voodoonola, thanks for the post. And hey, go WHTM. nice capture especially the last 15 seconds. Basically sums it up. I saw them at SPAC around this time and the scene was similar. but with a stream... (smile)
I was there! I heard it was their first outdoor concert in like 10 years. Also that the Dead loved City Island so much that they wanted to come back and play the next year, which they did, almost a year to the day later on June 23, 1984. I was at that one too. That was one of the last concerts on City Island before they turned it into a minor league baseball field.
Blacks were allowed. Did you notice the black gentlemen interviewed? He was part of the mayor's administration. Ever occur to you that The Grateful Dead didn't attract many blacks in 1983?
@@cjnav7832 Steve Reed didn't run the city like that! He wasn't a racist and downtown was flourishing under his administration. There were plenty of blacks involved in city government.
What a great place for shows that island was !! Carlos Santana was the last gig on that island...
My 2nd show.
...haha somehow I think I already commented this here???
Mayb flashback?
Thank you for posting this! I loved that venue for The Dead. Steve Reed made Harrisburg come to life. R.I.P.
And it’s been hell ever since

I think the guy that made them was out of Massapequa, Long Island. Popular shirt. I think mine is up in the attic somewhere.
@@joelperry8187 Way cool. Mine is so thin you can almost see through it but I know I have it somewhere
