How to Make a Clay Mockup for Sewing Patterns

  • Ever heard of people making miniature versions of things and then scaling them up full size? Here's a tutorial for that! You can use this technique for more than just fursuit items : stuffed animals, props, etc! I never saw anyone fully explaining the mini mockup process, so hopefully this explains it well!
    It's still gonna be a bit of time before the teeth+tongue video is done, since I'm filming the teeth of several different fursuit heads, so I have to reach the teeth stage of all of them before I can upload the tut XD
    -------
    Materials
    -modeling clay (polymer clay, air dry clay, or even epoxy clay)
    -aluminum foil (to fill the inside so you use less clay, which is more expensive than foil)
    -markers
    -blade / scissors
    -masking tape or duct tape
    -a scanner
    -either a large computer screen or a printer
    -optional: pasta/clay roller

    I have a question! When making your fursuit and furring it, what if the fursuit is a little lopsided, and doesn’t match both sides by accident? If you’re making two of every pattern from taping, how do you be sure both sides will be equal?

    • @freckledcatcreations
      @freckledcatcreations  4 роки тому +3

      Hey!! So basically, if your head base is pretty symmetrical then only taping half should work, but if you're worried about that, then you'll have to tape the whole thing. As well as... if the design isn't symmetrical, you'll have to tape the whole thing too. As for flipping the patterns to get the other side, I don't see how it could get much messed up, if you trace it right. Just make sure to copy over any of the connector lines onto the back side, etc!

    So do you trace the pattern onto foam and glue that together?

    • @freckledcatcreations
      @freckledcatcreations  4 роки тому +1

      I actually just cut it from fur and make this all with stuffing inside, no foam! But if you wanted to do a foam shell you could. Though because of the thickness of the foam, the foot will turn out larger than the pattern, so you will still need to tape over the outside of the foam to get the fur pattern.
      I made this mockup to AVOID taping up a full carved foam foot, so I wouldn't do this ! but you can if you want. people make feet differently.

  • @beau4612
    @beau4612 4 роки тому

    Heya! I'm a big fan of your work!

    • @freckledcatcreations
      @freckledcatcreations  4 роки тому +1

      TYso much!! and It's not a stupid question! For these, I fill them with stuffing/polyfill. Since it's made from a pattern, there's no need to use upholstery foam to sculpt the toes, so everything's fluff inside.
      I'm actually going to eventually film a tutorial on how to take these mockup patterns to make a foot, though it might be a few months before I make another feetpaw!

      If not, would there be any other way to use this technique for a head?

    • @freckledcatcreations
      @freckledcatcreations  4 роки тому +1

      @@beau4612 so sorry, youtube never told me you replied back. you can certainly use this for a head base too! making the head out of upholstery foam probably isnt gonna be too sturdy, but you should use the eva foam method like Mugiwara has shown on her channel - it just takes some cement glue and a heat gun to properly work tho, so youll have to spend a bit more on materials.
