Just wanted to say that your videos on Tales from the Flipside have been an INCREDIBLE resource for me as someone who is working hard to open a hobby store that involves comics and other things.
EXACTLY! I started collecting in spring of 1968 as a six year old. In 1971 I started working as a gofer/ organizing comic books and started learning about. Sales and grading. I worked at my buddies stores from 1988-2000. There's so many scum bag speculators who get books graded by CGC. Then ask ten times what it's worth. After starting rumors on line to sell dead comics. Like Marvel's New Uiverse. Which for decades you could barely sell maybe three of those titles back issues. Like Starbrand, DP 7 and one or two others. To fans who bought those new in 86-88 as a kid/teen.
Lol Marvel's new universe. I can't even sell them out of my dollar bin. Thanks for giving me a laugh. Appreciate the watch and being part of the discussion
Man oh man do I wish your shop was closer. Soon when the weather breaks I’ll be coming to see you guys. Please keep going. Enjoyed you immensely on Beyond Wednesday
As someone who used to consider himself "CG" in the early days when it stood for proper consumer revolt, I couldn't agree with you more. And certain people that won't be named imo turned it into the drama farm and made it untenable. Now, they're just as bad as all the industry wokists and rage-clickers that stink up the Big Two and sites like Bleeding Cool. There are still good new comics made in the USA out there, but it definitely takes effort to find them. Loving what Image is doing, and I hope the best for new voices to actually bring engaging superhero fun to the mix. Will even be sampling Iman Vellani's new Ms. Marvel book with the hope that her enthusiasm for the comics shines through. In the meantime, there's plenty of backstock I never got around to, and that's where I've turned most of my attention to the past decade, outside of that brief glimmer of awesome that was much of DC Rebirth. Anyway, I hope I'm not too far away, would love to scour the "reader copy" section of your store for some fun classic reads.
Well thank you for sharing your journey sir. I have been confused with CG many times. I really just want really well written comics. I don't care what's in the content. I do like a little politics but well written. Welcome to the conversation.
Thank you, sir! I do think the fact that so many political things have been stunts and didn't have strong storytelling to back them up is a big problem. I also think it's a problem that the politics have been so incredibly one-sided and preachy. Not sure how to fix the quality part outside of Marvel and DC actually investing in talent and paying creators and giving them reasons to bring their best to the table through residuals, etc is a must. If they refuse to pay a decent page rate, I don't know how the boat will ever turn around on this. Both publishers need new and better leadership for both problems. I've subbed and will be enjoying your weekly updates. Sadly I live in West Michigan, so a weekend road trip is out for now. Thankfully, we have a couple shops here with backstock, though. I wish you the best in your endeavors!
Emmet, awesome video! You really delivered some gems of knowledge and wisdom concerning the state of comics. "This game has gotten insane," couldn't have been stated any better. You touched on so many great points: Companies losing continuity, high sales numbers only to please investors, the lack of printing on quality paper, why it's essential to introduce kids to books/comics, the ill realities of running a comic business, why do distributors allow returns of their products??? etc. These are all serious questions/issues. Is the current state of comics sustainable? You made this vid in Dec. of 23, it is now 8 months later and things are not any better. A guy asked me in my lcs the other day about what universe a certain comic was in. I honestly said I can't even keep up with it any more. It's difficult to wrap the mind around it all. You are so right. This is exactly how they lose customers. That, and by not keeping up the high standards. People do need to be fired. Straight up! In sports, when you lose that edge, your finished. Same should be for people running these companies. No offense but that's life... Best point made - "we got to do more for the kids" truly a deep concept that people forget. Man... what do we do? I've got solutions and ideas just as you do. Maybe the tides will turn one day. Until then, we just keep it moving.
Just like in football pick the ball up and move forward. It's all we can do. Hopefully somebody will get a good coach /ceo. I made A video recently about the State of Comics. I actually see a lot of movement in marvel. I'm nearly selling out every week. The writing is much better. Currently there is decent continuity although not attached to the original continuity. Some of it is cheesy. Gimmicky but it's selling. I appreciate the valuable points you've added to the conversation. We have to bring back the community. It's only the shop owners that can do it.

I don’t care about any book published after 2000...and most ‘90’s books. When Ron Perlman bought Marvel and took it public, it was the beginning of the end for the fun and purity of the hobby. To me, the real collectible market (and the best stories) started with the Copper Age.

I was selling a lot of my collection of action figures and comics during 2020 and 2021, the figures I would sell for $1,$2, or $3 . The comics if they were common for 25cents to $1, the comics that had value for example If it was going for $20 in the overstreet price guide or eBay I would sell it for $5 to $10. Then with the money I made I would go buy comics I want in my collection. I used to trade but nobody wants to do it anymore. I now mostly buy comics that I will keep.
You seem like a good dude and I really like this channel, but as a consumer if I go in a shop and their back issues aren’t priced, I am not going to be buying any back issues

It’s all a short term game for the executives that actually hold the power to make changes and loosen control editorially for the writers to tell better stories , they don’t care for the ultimate health of an industry because they most likely won’t be in that position if they properly boost numbers it’s why we don’t have legacy numbering anymore , that’s what’s been happening at DC .. Mid level executives trying to work their way up the corporate ladder , they don’t want to stay in those positions .. they never came up through comics publishing like in the past so they have no affinity to the comic book market as a whole to them Warner /Discovery owns Batman that’s they way it’s always been and they need to control their corporate properties…I highly doubt a book like Watchmen would be published today.
Sell through is the key figure. Not print run. I think you are dead on about small and medium sized store subscriber estimates. Most titles have less than 10 any even 5 subscribers for the vast majority of titles. Blue Beetle, Shazam, Fire and Ice, Blade, Spider Gwen, Sentry on and on. I guess that most Marvel and DC titles have less than 15k sell through. I own a store and network with other stores. Most new comics have almost no audience.
The people who complain about politics or ideological issues being included in comic books, should read about Jack Kirby. His thought processes about creating characters like Captain America, Black Panther or the New Gods helps us understand that politics is important. Sometimes we need to take a stand and care about each other. Thanks for the video and having a great store, I was able to find issues of Tom Strong, Promethea and even Lone Wolf and cub in your dollar bins. The Lone Wolf and cub books are just great books and ill treasure them.

This is a lot of great points that I completely agree with. Thank you!
Hey Emmet :)
How's it going?
❤
Thanks for watching tons of other videos about the industry including a Scott Snyder interview in shop.

@@Sledhead thanks
Sell through is the key figure.
Not print run.
I think you are dead on about small and medium sized store subscriber estimates.
Most titles have less than 10 any even 5 subscribers for the vast majority of titles.
Blue Beetle, Shazam, Fire and Ice, Blade, Spider Gwen, Sentry on and on.
I guess that most Marvel and DC titles have less than 15k sell through.
I own a store and network with other stores.
Most new comics have almost no audience.
Thanks for the backup on my theories. It's much appreciated. Store owners are important part of this conversation. Thanks again!
Oh thanks so much and absolutely politics have always been in comics actually how comic started political cartoons newspapers?
Here we go again! Grumpy ole Santa comic guy! Gotta love him, and hate him! You go creepy Santa comic guy, you need your own comic book!! Manufactured market manipulation, nothing new!
Lol love your comment. Bring it on like a thick skin. I'd love to have my own comic. Thanks for watching and being part of the conversation and for the laugh
