The guide rail is also the earth return path for the power supply, stops people getting shocks when they touch the bodywork, like the earth pin on a 3 pin plug. I wonder if there's been any instances of derailment of this centre wheel, with the pantograph still making contact?
You probably dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times you can stream all the latest series on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my gf for the last couple of days :)
Hmm, I don't think this is actually better than a normal tram. - It requires a layer of asphalt at all times, things like this are impossible: www.tramtom.de/ttm_fotos/tramtom_1628.jpg - Friction is higher than with steel wheels on rails and therefore this vehicle most likely uses more energy than a normal tram - the rubber tires can break when driving over edgy debris on the road But it's still an interesting concept nonetheless
Quite odd. There must be some reason why to combine disadvantages of both systems. Noise is just barely reduced, mostly on switches and junctions. They definitely have better traction, especially in wet, is it acceleration and braking what was needed? Or maybe slope handling?
What happens if they get a puncture, or are they on 'run flat' tires. Really they are just a modern trolleybus without a steering wheel for the driver. They're really a copy of the Paris Metro taken to the "hopeful" next step - can't really see them being the transport method of the future.
QuarioQuario54321 .. So I presume they have to do a very quick wheel change job at the terminus, or is it not quite so quick and it has to be taken out of service. Out of interest how big are the wheels.?
Nice video. That massive continuous concrete slab to support the weight looks no smaller than the slab for a conventional modern light rail. Rubber tires may have better acceleration but they also have greater rolling resistance. Where’s the advantage in this system?
My understanding is that this system uses rubber tires because parts of the system have extremely steep grades, which would be essentially impossible for a standard steel-wheeled tram to traverse. One of the very few cases where rubber tires are actually useful
Really sucks that there's only one producer of Translohr type trams, all of translohr networks look the same :/ I wonder though - can it ride on sharper turns than a normal tram?
Nice video! As a passenger, I really dislike the advertisement wrappings on the windows of a train, tram, light rail, or bus. It is really distracting and limits my view outside. I will look for a car to sit in that doesn't have the wrapping or even wait for the next train hoping it doesn't have this annoying feature.
Luke Starkenburg You can still see outside. The ads are made with lots of little holes that permit you to see outside. It also works as a protection from Sun rays😂
I agree. This system combines disadvantages of trams (vehicles cannot overtake each other and cannot divert to bypass an obstacle) with inefficiency of rubber tires. Steel wheel on steel rail is always superior in means on rolling resistance. Moreover the fixed drive path results in creating ruts in tarmac/asphalt over time hence the road surface needs to be made of concrete or other pressure durable material.
Riding is worst. The difference is what you said this thing runs on rubber tyres and uses central guidance rail. Tram runs on rails. That's the difference. Production Company claimed this thing to be better suitable for inclines of 13% and narrow streets because it has 10,5 meter curve radius, and this things are 2,20m wide. But again Normal tramways are also built 2.20m or even 2.15m for example new CAF trams for Saint Etienne. Bombardier Trams also handle 10,5 meters curves in Toronto so there is no advantage. Maybe the only advantage is 13% slopes cause normal modern trams can handle up to 12% but this is the top. only 1% difference is nothing a big deal considering that Translohrs 13% slope handling no one needs. There are no cities with a need of huge tram like mass transit on such slopes.
I've ridden on rubber-tyred trams in Shanghai of the exact same make and model, and the ride quality is significantly worse - noisier and a lot bumpier compared to 'conventional' trams. Compared to 'conventional' trams, though, they accelerate a lot faster and crucially turn a lot faster as well.
siachoquero, Sure the riding is worse. And yes you have said what the difference is. But the ride quality is also due to the road. And with what FirstName Last name has said, it also is significantly faster than a normal tram.

Without steel wheel on steel rail, the co:efficient of rolling resistance will require 20x as much energy to move it.
Quite odd. There must be some reason why to combine disadvantages of both systems. Noise is just barely reduced, mostly on switches and junctions. They definitely have better traction, especially in wet, is it acceleration and braking what was needed? Or maybe slope handling?
Possibly the track construction cost. Building a railway track is much more expensive.
Riding on a push bike without 2 dangerous railtracks is a blessing
@neldot But I hear its better turn radius and incline - am I right?
@neldot So what made Venice want these types of trams rather than the traditional one?
I can understand the rubber tires in a city with steep slopes but it is flat as a pancake around Venice.

Actually upon reviewing this comment one more time - tyre is the British spelling - tire is the American
Interesting. Is it not more of a guided trolleybus though?
Indeed it is a guided trolleybus not a tram. No tracks no tram overhead electric and rubber wheels a trolleybus. Simple.
Ummm so we just gunna ignore the guide rail. Okay cool.
no so simple the rail provedes power return and is a tram with a trolleybus ride. bit of both. Tram technology tolleybus costs.
Alan Jefferies I would make a new way by just making cuttings in the road and using tradition wheels, just made out of rubber
Alan Jefferies It uses a pantograph, not trolley poles. A bus with a pantograph would probably be called a “Pantographbus”
