Two Points of Contact | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. fbkc1 (1829)

  • In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 5+5 game against a player rated 1829 on Chess.com. In the Queen's Gambit Declined (via transposition), my opponent plays a couple a couple too many pawn moves. In particular, 9...h6 gives me the green light to launch an attack with g2-g4-g5, seeking two points of contact (f6+h6) with the goal of opening lines against Black's king. #Chess #ChessInstruction #ClimbingTheRatingLadder

      It usually require your minors pieces toward the direction you want and a sacrifice to open lines. Moves like h4 are often needed too, they are dangerous if supported by a rook and other things. If the opponent waste time in the first 10 moves, then you could try to go very agressive with your pawns and put pressure. Closed positions are really super hard to defend sometimes

    Big big fan of the way you played this John. Not just because of the nice win but spotting the forcing moves that opened the king up. John you're pretty good at chess!
    I, therefore, would like to ask for some advice. I am rated around 1300-1400 on chess.com and even 1500 in one of my alt accounts. What I've noticed is that, after a certain number of games your rating becomes fixed and not provisional anymore. If I do well in my opening games I can get and maintain my 1400 rating but if I do badly I get stuck in elo hell at 1100 0r 1200. AND I have similar win rates on both accounts(1400 acc and 1200 acc), so I feel like I'm stuck in a hole and doing something wrong. Would love to hear what you think of this.
    Thanks!
    Also, great content! Keep it up!

    • @okibelieveyou7553
      @okibelieveyou7553 5 років тому +1

      There's really only a small difference between 1400 and 1200. I think if you played like 300 games on each account you'd probably end up in a very similar elo no matter where you were placed. It can take that many games to account for variance.

    1600-2000 there's discernment in skill level but I don't think it's colossal. A 2k player has a stronger understanding of the game in every sense by a small margin. However, 2k-2.4k I feel is a major difference. A 2400 can see all the small things that a 2k can't and it's much more difficult to reach that level of play.

      I was looking for a comment similar to this because I also wanted to respond to John's assessment of rating levels. I play almost exclusively bullet and blitz and yoyo between 1500 and 1700 with a peak of 1864 or something like that. From what I've witnessed watching GM and IM streamers play lower rated players, the main difference between players in the 1600-2000 neighborhood and the 2000+ level is that those of us in the 1600-2000 tend to lack long term planning skills. We're skilled enough and experienced enough to not lose out of the opening, but the middle game separates the title players from us because titled players know what they want to do after the opening. Notice how John explains throughout his videos what he generally wants to accomplish with each of his pieces based on his opponents' weaknesses whereas his lower rated opponents often make unnecessary waiting moves that don't seem to fit any theme of an ideal attack.

    Hi,
    While watching I was thinking I might have tried to send the h pawn up the board for an attack.
    However, I notice its not something you considered (or was mentioned by the engine). Could you possibly let me know why as I'd be interested in learning.
    I'm sure it's some super obvious reason that I probably missed (too slow?). But I'd appreciate the learning opportunity.
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hello John, i love the new content, i watch it every time, very instructive. I notice that in the videos you don't use the new visual analyser from chess.com, with colours to show the best moves. It can be triggered by clicking Analyse at the end of game, there is also an interesting accuracy score that it shows, i think the visual aspect of the new analyser would improve even more the final analysis part of the videos. Notice on thing in the colour codes, green is better than blue. Thanks for the videos 👍👍

    2:02 Would someone explain what a hook is please?

    • @Xrayballer88
      @Xrayballer88 5 років тому +1

      I believe it's an opponent's pawn or a piece near the king that becomes vulnerable to tactics when it's moved. If John's opponent had left the pawn on h7 then the only thing John's pawn push to g5 attacks is the knight, which his opponent can then simply move, which would also keep the pawn structure intact. But since John moved the pawn to h6, John's pawn push to g5 forks the knight and the pawn, which means after John's opponent moves the knight John can then capture on h6 and open up his opponent's king.
