- Thomas and Friends Trackmaster trains use a new Trackmaster track system. Lets compare a classic Trackmaster Diesel to the new Trackmaster 2 Diesel via some track trials over the classic Trackmaster tracks. The results will surprise you but which diesel is the more powerful toy train? I unbox and review the Trackmaster expansion pack Gordon's Hill which is an impressive Trackmaster track pack. It's long, high and steep and very easy to build. This track expansion pack really shows how dynamic the new Trackmaster 2 system is compared to the classic Trackmaster or older TOMY blue track system. With this new system there is a real feeling that you can keep building up higher and higher. It brings a whole new playing adventure to Sodor Island Thomas & Friends playtime.
I know many Thomas fans and lovers of the TOMY blue and classic Trackmaster don't like the new Trackmaster trains. I feel it's important to look at the history of the classic Trackmaster system so we can get our heads around the changes. So I show an old unboxed Percy which reminds us of how things used to be. Seeing the classic Trackmaster range will bring back some fond memories. But lets also remember the nightmare of different internal designs and battery configurations between the Thomas & Friends character models. There used to be AA, AAA, C batteries used across the range. All these different motor and battery configurations added much cost to the toy company and it's obvious that Trackmaster 2 is all about applying a standard internal design to the Thomas and Friends Trackmaster characters. This simplification has some major advantages to the toy company and consumers, but are we left with a better looking and performing toy? Does a child playing with this new design really care if it looks a little bit different? I'm sure if there is more fun to be had it will be a winner, because playing with toys is all about fun.

As Much as I'm keen into the new Track System I still don't like the new redesigned engines. And as far as performance goes, I find the old school Trackmaster Trains more superior. Not to mention Mattel has missed an opportunity to Reintroduce Oliver so you'd have to get lucky & buy one online at a ridiculous price.

I really saw this new system as an opportunity to start over again in Trackmaster, seeing as I sold my collection a while back. It's not a perfect system, but still very enjoyable and fun to collect.

Great video as always Leo! I really learned a lot about the new Trackmaster system. I like how dynamic the new sets are. And also the engines don't look that bad either. Having one type of battery is very convenient I must say. It's very interesting how low the undercarriage of the TrackMaster 2 is...I wonder why they did that. If it were higher it would have worked so well with the classic Trackmaster track. Overall it's a pretty solid toy and I don't collect trackmaster myself, but I think I might go out and start buying them. They do seem pretty cool.
Also, I honestly have never seen a Trackmaster flora either. I collect mostly take n play and even some of them such as D199 and Harvey Ive never seen in store.
I bought mine online but I really think they should make all models, in all ranges available in all countries.

***** I don't understand the changes under the new Trackmaster Thomas trains either. All I know is this change has the new engines getting hooked up on some TOMY and classic Trackmaster track parts. It's almost as if someone did not check the clearance, or is this a ploy to have us all buy the new track system.

to stop the trackmaster 2 from stopping on trackmaster 1 and tomy track you need to disassemble the engine then file the activation tab down. hope this helps!
Awesome review Leo...one of your best. I remember as kid I would love looking through the toy catalogs that came in the post....but now I look forward to seeing your toy reviews. I still prefer the Tomy trains (we have loads) but I like the colours used in this new track...why did it take them 30 years to finally get the colour right.

How about the next video you can review the Thomas Starter Set & a comparison between the Thomas that came with the set & the Thomas with the CGI face that came with the Blue Box car & see which one can climb up Gordon's Hill faster.
I think you really nailed it on the head in this review; these new Trackmaster engines etc might make a better toy, but certainly not a better collectable. I suppose this is what happens when only 1 toy company makes all the toys for a Brand-there is no incentive to improve as if you want Thomas you have to buy from Mattel, who now wins twice (As the owners of the show and merchandises).
Look forward to more set reviews, will be interesting to see how play changes with the new features.

I agree with Tanya you can try to make a set with the past tracks and the tracks we have today, but it might not work so u can give it a shot if you want.

I have a bunch of TOMY track and I also used to have this iPad game where you could build a wooden train track. I personally prefer the real stuff over the fake stuff you do on a screen. I still like other iPad games and in fact I'm writing this on an iPad. I just don"t understand how somebody could find a train track building game fun. Other games are fun but not that one. I love my real tracks and I play with them either everyday after school or on weekends.
It was interesting to see your thoughts on the new redesign TrackMaster, although I'm not too surprised you went with Devious Diesel to be honest. ;)
The only engines I have are Gator and Timothy, as I've sold off an additional 3 Gators for funds to procure only more of Gator for his rolling stock and cargo. Timothy's cargo, the clay rubble or whatever it may be, is nice, but not really worth buying numerous ones for said cargo piece.
There are many pros and cons to this system but, before converting Gator, Timothy, and Gator's rolling stock, Gator was able to pull all eight cars from the redesign that I own, and Timothy did as well on the old TrackMaster track, and even on a flat run of straight TOMY tracks. I won't say that I encourage the purchase of the new track system, as I don't have any of the track, but the track does have a more realistic element towards it in design, yet that bobbing or inconsistency to stay flat and level is something I'm not too fond of as a model railroader.
The silent motors are a welcome to me for the filming aspect, but nothing will ever replace the loud whirring of the older motors as the engines can easily haul a large consist behind them at speed. Granted that these newer engines may be much faster than some of the older ones, my 2004 Neville was able to gradually catch up and overtake both Gator and Timothy with ease; I may try that again, but only Neville (A.K.A. Stephen the Q1) was the one to overtake both and outpace them.
A great deal of cons to the few pros, but I'm not going to encourage the purchase due to my personal preferences. I'd love to see your opinions and thoughts of Gator though.
HankAmericanEngine Funny about the motor sound, I used that sound to be the engine sound on my Ultimate Trackmaster Review, it ended up becoming a great trains moving sound. Looks like Gator will be the next to be looked at..But I know nothing about him has I have not seen the new film...It's not even showing where I live from what I can work out.
Oh my. I do know that some UA-camrs have put both the U.S. and U.K. versions onto the web; thanks to a friend in the U.K., I've got both versions to watch/listen to.
As for the motor, each battery gave each motor its own personality. AA-battery powered motors had either a loud growling noise or a soft purr, like the C-Cell batteries. Each motor had a robust and unique personality to their sounds.

On that old Percy, I look at over my bed and see all of the sets that were on the panflet but I wish I could just go buy everything from the shelves, as we recently just got "Trackmaster 2" sets at the stores, going out to buy a set Gordon and Victor tomorrow! It's interesting. You can you can see Mattel's cost cutting measures all over the place. e.g. the new diesel's rear wheels have holes for coupling rods yet he doesn't have any (Obviously the one in the show does but hardly any companies bother to render them on toys)
Also Gordon's Hill? Can you really call that a hill? Surely it's more Gordon's bridge. Then again it looks like no bridge I've ever seen :P

tidmouthmilk12 I could write a very long list of the cost cutting going on, basically we are getting a downsize and this seems to be the way Mattel will hold onto profit margins as children move towards apps and games. This is the toy battle zone right now.

Dana Lunderville As I remember it took a very long time for the early series 1 Trackmaster to become popular. It was replacing what many classed as a classic toy train system TOMY blue track. It was in 2006 I picked up the TOMY Ultimate Thomas set (for the amazing price of $150), and maybe it would be really prudent to bring this set out and compare it to whats seen today. It is an awesome set, so large you never needed to buy another playset.

I noticed my Trackmaster 2 Thomas would get caught up on Misty Island track curves, the longer special ones, and he’d also get caught up on that blinking light mine piece that comes with that glowy green track and the tunnel.

In the UK,the new trackmaster 2 in asda costs around £14 while a tomy devious diesel costs around £7,tomy is more rare now and should be more expensive
Well, I haven't got any New trackmaster 2 stuff yet, but I might start with the Busy Quarry set, and then get some elevation. You should review the most massive trackmaster 2 set with your son: the Mad Dash on Sodor set.

SpongeEngine423 One thing I have found out is the new Thomas trains will not run on the Trackmaster Midnight Ride playset, I was doing some testing before making this years Halloween video and there are problems in the mine and loading area, hmmm the cross compatibility is not good at all.
