      Look and watch how "Roberts" keeps using the same trick over and over to disarm. That quick upward strike towards the sword hilt that doesn't actually start working until he tires from moving around the terrain too much. It's the thing he does backing up the rock as they're talking "forms"
      Also show's that Wesley was never trying to kill him from the beginning, when so many strikes aim at the head or body and not the hand. It isn't until Inigo switches hands that he actually goes for a kill shot. When he avoids them effortlessly, "amazing," and he switches hands as well

      Once Inigo knew Westley wasn’t the six-fingered man, he was relieved, and it turned into a friendly banter. It’s a subtle, yet fantastic way to show that Inigo Montoya was not a bad man. Only a man looking for revenge for the loss of his father.

      Well when it's clear Weasley is not the six fingered man and yet is able to fight at his own level Inigo is simply having a hell of a time. Likewise Weasley is likely confident in his own ability to track where Buttercup has been taken, and similarly hasn't fought anyone as gifted as he is. So observe the nicities the occasion demands because if someone your equel is about to die, it must be done in memorable fashion.

      Yeah, I know but Inigo's earlier trustworthiness happened when he believed that he would have an easy left-handed practice session before finishing Westley off with ease.
      By this point in the fight, Inigo was starting to realize that he might be in some trouble in what, as far as he knew, was a duel to the death.
      I suppose I'm just happy that the rising stakes didn't change things for either of them if that makes sense.

    All of the sword fighting was real. No stunt doubles were used for the sword fighting (the acrobatics, yes, they had gymnasts for that). But all the sword fighting was actually Cary and Mandy. They both had to train extensively to master the sword. There were no professional fencers hired to do this scene.

    • @randallbanks1589
      @randallbanks1589 6 років тому +224

      Cary and Mandy had little experience in fencing. Rob Reiner wanted it to the as real as possible, with close ups. Since close-ups would be impossible with doubles, Cary and Mandy were trained by Peter Diamond, and Bob Anderson, respectively. Bob did quite a bit of Darth Vader's light saber scenes, in several Star Wars movies. Peter was a fencer, who also was a stuntman, and stunt coodinator in Star Wars films.

In most classes you don't even get to do parries until a month in then two months is when you actually start to bout. So just the fundementals of fencing takes two months just to build the muscles and hand eye cordination does that help?

    Honestly rewatching this. Weasley disarms Inigo 3 times during this duel. He had him at the first disarm if he was going for the kill. Each time he honestly had him at the disarm. The first where he let him go fetch the blade, the second where he let him catch the sword when it fell, and the final when he knocked him out.

      I like to imagine there was an inverse set built, and the left-handed fighting was filmed there, then they switched to the other when Inigo "switched hands", which means the only time either is actually using their left hand is Westley while being pushed back until he, too, switches. That's what it's like in a real fencing match. If you do real fencing, you don't have time to think. You train long hours to make your reactions instinctive, and consist in blocking the opponent's blade and making a counter-thrust, which will in turn also be blocked.
      Essentially what you're doing is allowing your unconscious to fence while you watch quietly inside your head waiting for the opponent to make a mistake, at which time you seize control and strike your blow. You never really win a fencing match, you're just waiting for your opponent to lose. That's exactly what we see here. Both are so good that neither one makes a mistake, so all you see is the automatic back-and-forth not really designed to strike, but to lure the opponent into creating an error through which to strike.
