At least he didn't get suckered into drinking from the gold cup covered in emeralds, that naughty little Fraulein choose that cup to kill that guy so she could take off with Indy......
There’s actually a lot of depth to this scene, and I really like that. For one thing, when Vizzini starts talking about Westley relying on his strength to save him, you can see Westley start to get flustered, because Vizzini’s really close to the truth, not to mention the guy’s next words are “you’re trying to get me to give something away.” Furthermore, Vizzini doesn’t drink from his goblet until Westley drinks from his, figuring that if Westley is willing to drink from his goblet, he must’ve chosen correctly when he switched the cups. This is genuinely a really intriguing scene even if you remove the twist at the end.
Vizzini couldn't see the forest for the trees. He was a genuinely very intelligent person who had every piece of the puzzle, but he formulated his own plan to trick Westley and failed to imagine Westley outsmarting him
They foreshadow it in the book too. When Vizzini begins his vacillating about how he both can't choose his own goblet and can't choose Westley's, the narration says "The man in black was starting to get nervous." Then when Vizzini says "You could have put it in your cup, trusting on your strength to save you", it says "The man in black was very nervous now."
He was mainly nervous because their first pick for Vizzini was Danny Devito but I dunno if he was either busy or they didn’t even offer it to him. But Wallace Shawn was so nervous he was gonna be replaced. Now Dany Devito I could see pulling this off but I think Wallace Shawn helped make Vizzini’s time memorable.
Westley DID give up the most perfect clue: Westley drank first, so he knew the poison wasn't in his glass. It's a VERY SMART move. In his mind, Westley wouldn't have drank first if he knew the poison was in his goblet. The rest was just waiting for opportunity.
Why the fuck would you drink a glass of poison if you know it's in front of you? -- Thoughts in his head. He waits. Westley drinks first. - Smart. (Now we can argue, why would you agree to this, and him handling the poison, but hey, he'll totally murder you anyway if you hurt that girl)
Vizzini was actually quite smart with how he was constantly trying to trick Wesley into revealing secrets, before finally switching cups, and only drinking after Wesley had. His only flaw was that he did not realize that Wesley was playing a different game than he was.
His downfall was assuming that the rules were that the poison had to be in one goblet or the other. The game was to determine where the poison was, and to then take a drink. The vagueness opens up different opportunities from both sides. Wesley could've not poisoned either goblet and hoped for Vizzini to panic and give up. Vizzini could've chosen to drink directly from the bottle, as Wesley did not specify from where he had to drink. So by assuming that certain rules were set into place that weren't there, he fell for a trap. For a self-proclaimed genius, Vizzini wasn't much of an "out of the box" thinker.
Intellectual arrogance. He was so sure he understood the rules of the game, he didn't need to think it through any further. Besides, he always intended to win by cheating; switching glasses and watching if the man in black drunk first. So the entire monologue was his attempt to get the man in black off balance and twitchy so that he'd react when he did the 'What's that over there.' stunt.

So if this is out of genuine fear of "not getting in heaven" and/or "angering god" that says a lot about ones twisted and frankly downright disturbing view on spirituality :)
Vizzinis childlike move is actually pretty genius in one way. If Wesley drank from his cup, Vizzini would know the cup he's holding is not the poison. If Wesley reluctantly drank from his cup, or tried not to, Vizzini would know the cup he's holding is the poison. So in one way, he had both ways covered to know if he was drinking the poison or not. He did not expect however that Wesley would drop the poison in both cups.
Well yes, assuming that Wesley didn't know he switched cups. But i think it's pretty obvious he knew exactly why Vizzini "saw" something remarkable over his shoulder at exactly that moment.
They both tried to win by altering the game without the other's knowledge. The battle of wits was not the picking of the right cup it was the battle of who had the best method to win despite what cup the poison was in.
Nope he thought he was a genius and never considered an immunity, one of the ways humans have evolved forever. He left out a classic trait for humans in his determinations. He was foolish and arrogant and that's why he's dead. Alternatively Westley could have stabbed him in the throat while he was rambling on and on but ya this is better.
@@ZhaoYun320 “Yes, Australia. And you must have suspected I would have known the powder's origin, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me” 😏
It's actually not too hard to build up an immunity to poisons. You start with a very low dose. Then when you're no longer affected by that dose, you increase the dosage. Eventually, what was once a lethal dose of poison will be only as deadly as a tablespoon of sugar to an average person.
“So I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.” “So I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me.” Yup. You were right. Couldn’t choose either.
Correct. Westley said to Viz that the challenge ends when Viz chooses, and both men drink. If Viz had just chosen to drink from the bottle, he'd have won even though Westley didn't die due to his immunity.
I just realized Wesley gulps when Vizzini says "You're exceptionally strong, so you could have put the poison in your own goblet trusting on your strength to save you." Very nice details you catch in these exchanges throughout the film!
There's actually a running theory that Wesley lied to the princess and that this is somewhat the truth! I've seen logic as far as 'wine had a non lethal activater that reacts with the poison and Wesley never smelt the poison, just pretended'
At 1:40 - 1:49 Wesley nervously gulps and his confident smirk briefly goes away, when Vizzini gets dangerously close to figuring out the result of this battle of wits. These little touches are what makes this movie gold.
The way Westly said "You guessed wrong" and the look he had when he said it has the most subtle darkness to it that actually makes it terrifying, like there is so much power and gravity behind it.
Through the movie we are so blinded by Westley's charm and love for Buttercup it's easy to forget he is still a killer and very competend pirate. That line is kind of a gentle reminder to how ruthless he can be
I saw this as part of a group lesson in High School. A part of a Drama or English class. Junior year. The SECOND Vizzini keeled over, someone in the class said "dumbass..." The whole class ERUPTED into laughter. The timing was excellent.
My dad showed me this movie, it was one of his absolute favorites. I wish I could’ve watched this in school, too, but I at least got introduced to Dead Poet’s Society in school instead
It's ever so good how Wesley's response to Vizzini pointing out, correctly, that according to logic he cannot drink from either goblet, is to say "you're trying to get me to give something away". It's not a huge moment but it's a lovely little nod to the fact that he is, for the first and perhaps only time in this entire scene, extremely close to the truth of the situation.
He didn’t figure it out at all. It’s actually surprising how stupid he was here. One of the first things he should’ve thought of was the possibility that perhaps both goblets were poisoned. His over analysis of everything is highly convoluted and makes very little sense, relying on far too much guesswork on Vizzini’s part, much of it coming from nowhere. Vizzini’s reasoning is quite narrow, as he doesn’t see any other possibilities other than one goblet or the other being poisoned. The way Wesley words the question leaves numerous solutions Vizzini clearly didn’t think of. Wesley asks where the poison is, not which goblet it is in. He could’ve put it in one, both, even neither, and as an alternative, Vizzini could’ve drank from the bottle the wine was poured in as a truly clever method of outsmarting Wesley. He is not nearly as bright as he thinks he is and the only reason he might have been considered smart was because the other two men working with him weren’t exactly the brightest bulbs.
@@a_fine_edition2746 on the contrary, the man DID figure it out. Wesley was actually starting to panic once Vizzini said "you'll rely on your strength to save you" and Wesley also said that Wesley has clearly "studied". Wesley was panicking, look at this hand the whole time as well. Because if your opponent is doing someone wrong, you DON'T correct him. Wesley was bluffing and tried to throw Vizzini off. Sadly for Vizzini he DID fall for it, as he didn't pursue nor ponder those two ideas into thinking of the possibility that Wesley studied the poison and learned that he could develop an immunity, which relied on the strength to do so. TL;DR Vizzini did infact come close to figuring it out but he was thrown off by Wesley
Interestingly, there was absolutely a way for Vizzini to win. And the way Wesley phrased his challenge even suggested as much. He said "Where is the poison?" Not "Which cup has the poison?" The game ends when you choose and we both drink. He never said Vizzini had to choose a cup, the bottle was sitting right there on the table, he could have chosen to drink safely from that, were he actually as clever as he thought he was.
I actually totally agree he tried to give him an out. In the previous fights Inigo and the giant fought on fair ground, handicapping their strength in some way (using his non dominant hand or going hands on respectively) which is why even when beaten he chose to spare them both. But here he cheated by switching the glasses when his back was turned. He tried to be tricky and it cost him his life
I use a variation of vizzini's speech when someone falls victim to the 4 turn checkmate in chess. @@willh1655 no one ever falls for that one. Everyone knows about it. it's the first thing you learn in chess. Don't move in this very specific way or you lose.
I feel Westley fell for that "Look behind you" trick on purpose. He wanted to appear like Vizzini outsmarted him, when in fact, he didn't. Vizzini basically gave it away when he said, "Me from my glass, and you from yours." That may be why both goblets were poisoned. Westley outsmarted him.
I don't know about that, he might have wondered if he really does see something. Obviously he didn't have to worry about him switching cups so he could afford to look back.

Or rather, presuming that he understood the test correctly. The test was "where is the poison?", not, "One of these glasses is poisoned; pick one, and I will drink the other". For Vizzini, the truly correct answer would've been to drink from the bottle, leaving Wesley to drink from both cups.
I like to think that she was being silent because she was trying to figure out the battle of wits in her head while Vizzini was laying it all out,she was basically a spectator.
The genius of this scene is that Wesley both outwitted and didn't outwit him. Wesley knew he couldn't outwit him if it was a battle of the minds straight up, so he turned a battle of wits into a battle of strength... which in and of itself is outwitting your opponent

@@Averyofthemain But extensive medical knowledge also brings forth ideas of treating injuries and poisons, or even building biological tolerance, as shown here with the poison immunity. To point, Vizzini's fatal flaw was that he was not learned enough to know that a living body is incredibly adaptable, and thus ultimately capable of eventually adapting to build a high tolerance and nigh-immunity to various ill effects, such as sickness, disease, or poison. Or maybe he did learn of it, but simply did not consider it due to believing that his opponent would be stringently honorable, fair, and straightforward in the battle of wits.

I feel like Vizzini was too determined to show off his mental abilities to really think for a moment. The fact that he gave a huge speech is evident of this. Smart people are keenly aware of how little they know and so will often remain quiet in the face of a problem. 1 to allow themselves to think and 2 to not give away their lack of knowledge on the matter But he was too bold in his abilities. He blathered on, blissfully unaware of his lack of knowledge on the matter of poison.
He actually logically assessed the problem at first when he anylzed that he beat the giant meaning he has good endurance. Then he over thought the situation out of pride and confidence.
I think he actually said all of that stuff not just to be pride of his knowledge but mainly to see Westley's reactions (like watching which cup, see any tense behaviour, etc)
If Vizzini had followed his train of thought into its most simple conclusion he would have realized what he was saying. That neither of the cups were safe to drink from and that too much risk was stacked against him. The correct winning move would have been to call off the game completely. The chips were in his hands, he threw away his means of victory the moment he agreed to the wager
One of the most sneakily hilarious quips in the movie (which is saying something): “But you’ve also bested my Spaniard which means you must have studied. And in studying, you must have learned that man is mortal”
Wallace Shawn is yet another living proof (in a lineage that reaches back thousands of years, all the way to Aristophanes) that comedy in all of its variants -- high and low, verbal and physical, written and performed -- absolutely REQUIRES intelligence in its creator(s). You can't possibly master the infinite subtleties and involutions of pratfalls, inflections, sidelong looks of the eyes, and all the rest of comic devices, if you haven't got a mind that is as swift as a gazelle, and as nimble as the fingers of a concert pianist. What a joy it is to watch such people at their best!
Not only that, but you can see Westley tense up. His smile fades, he figets with his hand, and swallows nervously. He is almost found out. It's a great, subtle bit of acting.
He would have been right if he stopped after saying he couldn't choose the cup in front of Westley and he also couldn't choose the cup in front of him. Oh well! Brilliant scene.
It's so much fun listening to Vizzini evaluate the situation even though it's obvious he didn't really know where the poison was and had to resort to the classic "Hey, what's that?" trick.
The funny thing is that there is a safe choice: the bottle, but Wesley successfully fooled him into thinking the battle was that only one cup was poisoned.

It was nice of Wesley to let his enemy think he had won all the way until the moment of his death. Letting him die happy rather than rubbing it in his face seems the gentleman thing to do.
He even rotated the glasses a bit before setting them down to put into his opponent's head the false assumption that the game is about only one cup being poisoned.

Wow That’s incredible hahaha
There’s actually a lot of depth to this scene, and I really like that.
For one thing, when Vizzini starts talking about Westley relying on his strength to save him, you can see Westley start to get flustered, because Vizzini’s really close to the truth, not to mention the guy’s next words are “you’re trying to get me to give something away.”
Furthermore, Vizzini doesn’t drink from his goblet until Westley drinks from his, figuring that if Westley is willing to drink from his goblet, he must’ve chosen correctly when he switched the cups.
This is genuinely a really intriguing scene even if you remove the twist at the end.
Completely agreed. He gets a lot of crap, but for what he was given he honestly did everything right
It was a battle of wits after all, not a simple guessing game
Vizzini couldn't see the forest for the trees. He was a genuinely very intelligent person who had every piece of the puzzle, but he formulated his own plan to trick Westley and failed to imagine Westley outsmarting him
Except for the part where none of the giblets were poisoned and he was dead as soon as he inhaled the poison. It just took a minute to kill him
They foreshadow it in the book too. When Vizzini begins his vacillating about how he both can't choose his own goblet and can't choose Westley's, the narration says "The man in black was starting to get nervous." Then when Vizzini says "You could have put it in your cup, trusting on your strength to save you", it says "The man in black was very nervous now."
I can't believe Wallace Shawn was so nervous and self conscience he thought he was going to ruin this movie. He was an absolute pleasure to watch!
It was “inconceivable”
He always is a pleasure to see. I love him in star trek as the grand nagus.
He is a more thrilling villain than Prince Humperdinck though he isn’t nearly as cool as Count Rugen.
I come back to this lovely movie time and time again just for him! 😂😂

He also wasn't very observant, since he paid attention to the guy's face instead of his hands. THE HANDS GAVE IT AWAY!
Intellectual arrogance. He was so sure he understood the rules of the game, he didn't need to think it through any further. Besides, he always intended to win by cheating; switching glasses and watching if the man in black drunk first. He was smart enough to figure it out but too cocky to understand his own deductive reasoning.
@@a_fine_edition2746 His reasoning on him being strong enough to resist the poison was close if not for the one crucial element.

1:43 wow Vizzini got the whole trick right there
I don't get it, was his plan to do that? I thought his only trick was that both were poisoned and her had immunity
This scene is literally one of the best in general history ever
Just my opinion but this scene is just one of those that I’ll never forget. It’ll stick in my mind for ever, hilarious characters, great writing.
It’s actually one of the only scenes I can remember from the movie. It stuck in my head as a kid and I still love it.
This is the most logical conversation in the entire movie.
Vizzini got that vulcan logic
1:40 I love how Vizzini is actually kind of correct here.
Well since he went back and forth a lot on which cup he couldn't choose, wasn't he correct multiple times?
Not only that, but you can see Westley tense up. His smile fades, he figets with his hand, and swallows nervously. He is almost found out. It's a great, subtle bit of acting.
"You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders!"

Looks like the turns have tabled.

3:14 When you fell victim to one of the classic blunders.
I forgot I made this unoriginal joke and now regret it
It was funny enough.
a- *ded*
i shouldn't be laughing this hard
ITS A TRAP
Admiral Ackbar ha good one
Admiral Ackbar Inconceivable!
The princess bride is the bomb dot com
Allahu Akbar! 💣 (BOOM)
Yes its a Mandela effect trap. Her dress used to be BLUE.
I love how he is 100% correct that he cannot choose the wine in front of himself or Roberts.
I just love the fact that Wesley sits there the whole time knowing that either drink he picks, it doesn’t matter because he poisoned them both. 😂👍

The funny thing is that there is a safe choice: the bottle, but Wesley successfully fooled him into thinking the battle was that only one cup was poisoned.
I love how Vizzini is just laughing, and Westley just keeps smiling.
Poison that came from Australia, "Australia is full of criminals," so that means this movie was set in the around late 1700s to early 1800s. If that's the case, then why are they all dressed like they're in some twilight zone between the renaissance and middle ages?
Same goes as "Never get involved in a land war in Asia."
Anthony It's a fairy tale, not alot needs to make sense in these types of entertainment.
Really breaks the immersion when you realise a couple of red coats could bust through at any second with rifles.
If they did show up, they'd be too scared of an angry Andre to try shooting. No one pisses off The GIANT.
For what it's worth, the book has a whole thing about being "before" this but "after" that.
It was nice of Wesley to let his enemy think he had won all the way until the moment of his death. Letting him die happy rather than rubbing it in his face seems the gentleman thing to do.
It's Rex from Toy Story!
No wonder it sounds familiar
And he played Mr. Huff from The Incredibles.
I was scrolling through the comments and I was thinking his voice sounded familiar 😂
@@violetrain4638 YOU DIDN'T KNOW?! INCONCEIVABLE!
Oh, that's why he sounds familiar
Genius how he never said only one of them was poisoned. He just said "Where is the poison?"
Then the other assumed he only poisoned one.
He even rotated the glasses a bit before setting them down to put into his opponent's head the false assumption that the game is about only one cup being poisoned.
A comment section where you have people form 3 and 4 years ago talking about the movie and less people talking about the MEME?
This.. does put a smile on my face.

Inconceivable.
Vizzini even got it right when he guessed Wesley poisoned his own cup and planned to tank the poison. But Vizzini was so nervous he distracted himself with further speculation.
I can't imagine how many times Wallace had to say inconceivable after this movie came out.
One of the best scenes of all time, from one of the greatest movies of all time.

He literally died laughing xD
This movie has such good dialogue it's unbelievable.
You mean inconceivable?
@@xandranicholai7301 Exactly!
The movie is based on the book of the same name. Both the book and the film's screenplay was written by William Goldman. Goldman is a 2-time Oscar winner (Best Original Screenplay for BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID and Best Adapted Screenplay for ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN).
I the read the book about a year a year and a half ago. Jesus I didn't realize this comment is old.
