My Mom would take me to Gables back in the 60's. As a child it was always an adventure getting on the elevator and the doors open to a completely different world from the previous floor you were on.
I’d be surprised if the building makes it. Needs a lot of work if you saw the inside. Would cost a ton of money to fix it up. Too young to have seen it in its glory but a friend used to own it and went through it many times a few years ago. Could still see remnants in the basement of the shoe department, salon/etc. Could see the old facia under the brick on the 12th Ave side. Is a shame they incased it in brick. Upstairs was the owners very large office and the old WFBG studio. Was pretty neat to see. Would have loved to seen it functional in there instead of looking like something out of a horror movie 😞

Although the building still stands, I will always mourn the loss of Gables Department Store.
