      Nice planting team. Very cool. They seed with a Great Plains drill in the fall and block off some tubes to leave gaps fir the corn planter. It works out pretty well for a no till cover crop set up.

    Ok, so I grew up on a farm in Indiana in the 70's and 80's, and we'd prep fields with the plow, then disc it all (plowing was after grandpa make me and my brother walk the fields throwing big rocks into the bucket while he rode the small tractor, lol...), then we'd load the seeder and plant rows. How is this new-fangled planter sowing rows in a grass, hard field like that? Are there little plow blades in front of each row of seeder or something???

    What is the purpose of the dirt tracks between the grass strips. I was under the impression that was where the corn was to be planted.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  3 роки тому

      They seeded the cover crop with a 35ft drill and planted the corn with a 40ft planter. The cover crop gaps do not always match up but the planter is able to seed right through.

      When the tractor that pulled the drill was set correctly the planter followed it perfectly. I am interested in seeing what the yield difference if any there is.

    • @JD-oh9vz
      @JD-oh9vz 3 роки тому

      Bobby chandler I agree. Let us know if there is a yield difference. We don’t do cover with our strip till but have been thinking about it

  • @farmerallis

    Any reason they're planting into the rye strips rather than in between them? I've never seen that before and I live in MD where 75% of our corn crop is planted into cover crops.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  3 роки тому +1

      A 35ft box drill was used to seed to cover crop and its guidance was off a bit. The 2140 went right through the rye with no issue. It will be interesting to see how the yield is on dirt rows vs rye rows. I don’t think there will be a difference from what I could see in the seeding.

    I don't understand yet how some farmers plant corn without fertilizer. In our Indiana, Michigan, Ohio area almost everyone uses liquid fertilizer with extra openers.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  3 роки тому +1

      This farm side dresses the corn with fertilizer after it starts growing. They just started side dressing so hopefully I will catch that process to film.
