@@alberttanner408 "Its respect and value" but it is still superficial. Hindus bow before poisonous snakes too. Do you know why? If you look at the Vedic metaphysics Sankhya, the universe and everything in it is considered as the body of the conscious, immortal, immutable, self luminous, immanent (soul), transcendent and omnipresent divine without which nothing can exist. In other words there is nothing other than conscious divine + energy (aka Shiva and Shakthi) and they always exist together for the perpetual duality cycles to happen. eg Birth/decay (Including reincarnation cycle). energy/matter, wave/particle, summer/winter, freezing/melting, manifestation/concealment of the universe (not creation or destruction since energy can be neither created nor destroyed), man/woman, day/night etc Sankhya Vedic metaphysics can be validated by logic, double slit quantum experiment and embodied experience (direct knowledge through focus and meditation)
It also means "Tat Tvam Asi'' meaning - You (conscious and immanent athma or the soul) are (already) that (conscious, transcendent and omnipresent divine) regardless of whether you realize it or not because without the conscious, immanent and omnipresent athma or divine nothing can exist. Identification with thoughts and body is just an illusion because the 5 senses are experienced by the athma or soul and it is NOT the doer. Conscious and omnipresent athma or soul is like a silk thread which goes through different pearls (animate and inanimate) if you think in terms of an analogy.
The duality cycles of nature are mediated by the conscious and immanent/omnipresent soul and sustained by dharma or Satvik guna. So the purpose hindu dharmic tradition is to encouraging individuals to follow personal, social and environmental dharma to minimize Karma or cause and effect, put an end to reincarnation (birth/death duality) and get Moksha (eventually)

But, I reminded myself why I had started on this path of Sanatan Dharma. So, I simply ordered vegetarian food, and let me tell you, at the end of the dinner, I was happy I didn't let go of my Dharma just for a moment of sensory pleasure.

We respect all animals which are in the Indian subcontinent. But cows were special bcos almost whatever the economic activities happened in an olden day household happened around a cow. Manure for farms, milk, butter, ghee. We treat it as our mother as it gave us milk. Ppl who had cows more than 2 were considered very well off. It's our family member. Ancient India was the most sustainable living. Everything we did we were very considerate of nature like river trees. Today we are mad reckless world who think every material is limitless. The non materialistic more nature oriented approach was bcos every man or woman in olden times were destined to get moksha not to be materialistc. Even today old ppl just be chanting gods name in a corner and just do minimum living.

Jeffrey Armstrong really explains well as to why cows are respected in India.
Cows are peaceful animals, that have given people of Bharat milk freely for thousands of years. If an Indian father had no money to buy food for his wife, children and parents, if he kept a cow, his family would not starve. This is how for thousands of years, the ancestors of the people of India and also Pakistan and Bangladesh and Afghanistan survived. Because our ancestors survived due in no small part thanks to cows milk, we exist today.
The respect we give to cows, is just awesome, fantastic and it highlights a humbleness and gratefulness. If another human did so much for us and our family, we would be eternally grateful to them.

I'm just amazed by your knowledge on Hinduism. Its great seeing your unbiased respect for nature. This has nothing to do with any particular religion. There is only one religion on the planet. Which is, living in harmony with all the species that have an equal right to live on mother earth.

Thanks for explaining Hinduism. Hindu way of life came naturally to us. We never felt we had to do any rituals , except bath, pick-up school bag , have some milk and go to school. If we passed by temple we bowed down our heads a little and kept walking. Compassion was very important of growing up, discouraged to step on creeping crawling things on road, that insect may be carrying food for its babies a waiting at home, no morals preached , long lectures about right or wrong, I am very old now, and to this day l am not able to step on small pests that tend to get into the house somehow. Smocking them out appears better way to get rid of them.. survival has become such a big issue being companionate sounds like being cowardly.

I used to feel ashamed in front of my muslim or christian friends to think that I'm an idol worshipper, venerates cow, do not eat beef, prays to river, sun, etc. It used to create a feeling of negativity. After going through this, I feel rejuvenated; I'm no longer ashamed.
