Thank you so much for your community service by posting this video, minor mistakes and all! You are clearly not worried to show that engineers are fallible too! :)) I am grateful for people like you out there--I am not totally at the mercy of the service repair companies. My old wooden garage door is back in operation (much smoother and quieter) after my son and I followed your guidance! Gratefully, Jayati
I have the same genie, and I was about to call a garage specialist, now that I see how easy your explanation is I'm going to doit my self, Thank You For Taking time in show us how to do it :-)
Thank you so much for this video! Because of this post, I was able to diagnose the problem with my garage door opener and fix it myself for under $20! I also appreciate you leaving in the bit where you accidentally put the part on backwards, as it caused me to be particularly careful not to make the same mistake myself. Thanks again!!
Thanks for posting this video. It illustrated exactly what was wrong with my Genie opener, and showed the repair was simple. Rather than paying for an expensive service call I spent $14 and 10 minutes on the fix.
Just wanted to add my thanks. It took me about 10 minutes to find this video which EXACTLY details the problem and fix with my garage door. Glad to see how simple it is and thanks especially for highlighting the parts to order! You saved me over $100! :) On a side note, I truly appreciate people like you who take the time to make such videos. I like to do these projects with my daughter to teach her and give us both the confidence to do fixes ourselves before paying a lot of money for someone who may or may not be able to help or just try to sell us more stuff we don't need.
Thanks, This helped me figure out the best way to gain access without taking the whole track down. Made it super easy. I am amazed at how worn the carriage was!
A Follow Up Thank You! I called a Local Garage Door Company to buy the Part. They immediately criticized my "Screw Type Opener". Said they didn't even work on them. They are SO NOISY! But they could convert to a Belt Drive for several Hundred Dollars! I advised them We were Retired and didn't normally sit around and listen to our Garage Door opening and closing since we were in our car Leaving or Coming Home. Thanked them for insulting me and immediately ordered Part from Amazon. I can wait a few days for Your $15.00 Repair vs. spending Hundreds! Thanks again! Your Video is Great! (I suspect my Wife can do this within 30 Minutes!!!)
I made the same assumption as lonebeagle, thinking it was the coupler (which seems to be the most frequent point of failure), but I ordered 2 so I would have a spare. As soon as I got the old coupler out and saw it wasn't damaged, I knew I would have to keep troubleshooting. Found this video that perfectly matched the sound and behavior of my garage door. Just replaced the carriage following this video, and the door works perfectly.
Thanks buddy, the same thing happened to mine. Two days after it made the noise it broke. Thanks again for your instructions, looks like I'll be fixing mine tomorrow morning.
i am soooooo happy to find your video!! thank you so much for making this video. my garage door just broke yesterday and I didn't know what is wrong with it. I had the same exact problem with my garage doors. I looked at your video as soon as I saw and heard the same noise it made trying to go up! Knew I found the right video!! Now I know what needs to be done thanks to your video! I even liked that you didn't edit out when you installed the part reversed. it will definitely help me to watch out for that! Many thanks!!!!
I dont know if my garage door is having this same wornout part, but recently its been making so much noise and it just seems like does not want to lift the door, and its been over 20 years old. I guess it's time to give it a check. Thank you for sharing us this video, man. I know its really difficult to record all the process while fixing stuff.
Just wanted to take time out to say thank you for your posted help. You had and described all the things that was wrong with my garage. The instruction were on point and I think I finished the job in about 30 minutes or less. When I think of the money I could have been out not knowing what to do and probably taking a chance on someone telling me I need to replace everything
Great video, thanks..good thing is that you put it backwards, then corrected it, so it is a good way to teach other people to remember that. Also I should say "good quality video and sound"
Thanks for the video--I have exactly the same problem. I first replaced the coupler but it was like new so that wasn't the problem. I'll order a new carriage and replace it.
I have the exact same symptoms. Excellent explanation & video. So I have ordered parts. The only comment I would like to make is that, make sure your garage door is well balanced. I believe, if the garage door is disengaged from the opener & running freely manually, it should be able to stop around 32"-36" inches from the ground and stay there without any help from you. If not, make the changes to the tension of the torsion spring so that the door is balanced. BE AWARE: Playing with the torsion spring is very dangerous. If you do not know what you are doing, please get professional help. If the door is not balanced, that would put undue stress on the plastic grooves in the carriage which will make it fail again sooner than the expected life of it
Great video, made it easy for someone with below average mechanical ability and gets frustrated quickly. (Chemical engineer - am great with liquids!) THE CARRIAGE HAS RAISED BLACK LETTERING INDICATING ORIENTATION. Says DOOR -->
Looks like it was hitting every time it touched the rail where they connected to each other. From a another video I seen, for commercial use they use a single piece rail. Garage door openers for non professional installers use these 3 piece rails so they can put everything in a smaller box.
Replaced the carriage in a couple of minutes and the opener is back to working perfectly. It's very simple to change out the carriage--just take off the nut and then hold the beam and lift it upwards slightly and then slide off the old carriage. Slide on the new part and then re-insert the beam attaching bolt into the bracket and tighten the nut. You don't have to remove any wires. Just make sure to lube the new carriage with grease.
please like the video

Excellent explanation of the job of replacing the Genie screw-drive carriage! Couldn't ask for a more thorough or clearer explanation. Thanks so much.

Thanks dude! I had the same exact issue, I was this close to call a technician.

Thank you! The repair thief wanted to charge me $198 for parts and labor. $98 for the part! The part cost $13 on Amazon!
