Have delayed fixing up a poorly functioning workshop for over a year because I felt like I hadn’t seen great ways for the tools to be stored. Going all in on magnets after this vid. Cheers!
Good video, Kez! Using magnets for the number of tools you have is a good idea. My set of standard turning tools is rather small so I have them lined up in a shelf with holes, blades down so I can easily see them. My carbide tools are a bit different due to the way I have the handles configured so I use a bucket full of sawdust. I can just jab them down in the sawdust and they stand right there where I can grab them without having to aim for any holes. Glad to see you back posting videos.
Thanks, mate. I love the sawdust bucket idea! Sounds a lot easier than the magnets I have going on; for those tools anyway. Cheers mate. Its good to be back. Kezza
Thanks for info on magnets for tool storage. I have considered using this idea but haven’t worked out how to execute it in my shed. Your shop is much bigger than mine so organizing things for efficiency and compatibility is very important. Happy New Year Kerry! 😊
@KerryCorney I just upgraded to a new to me Oneway lathe, everything is round and none of my magnet trays are sticking without modifications 😅 keep up the great work bro!
Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. I'm currently looking at making a tool holder that bolts to the back section of the legs of my Lathe (Laguna 24/36), essentially a long piece of Angle Iron, that's wider on one side (left over track extensions I made for my Saw Mill), with holes positioned for placing my commonly used tool rests, so they're at hand, as well as either extra slots for holding tools in use so they're easily accessible, and now with your idea of magnets, I could put a stripe along the back side to hold items such as calipers. This might not work with a lot of Lathe's, however, the Laguna 24/36 has a plate that can be mounted on the legs where they attach to the bedways which is thicker than the angle iron I'm looking at using, just need to do a lot of drilling, lol. I also use trays, however, mine are just cheap metal trays (one has Cheech and Chong printed on it), but use some small rare earth magnets super glued to the top of the headstock to place the tray like you do yours. I also use a box making tool rest with it's larger flat top surface and place a few magnets on top, which allows placing a metal tray in place under the spindle to catch debris like inlay material, or for holding water when wet sanding. There's so many cool ideas.
That sounds like a great way to organise your tools, especially having the magnets on the back! Looks like you have it all sorted mate. Cheech and chong sound like a cool tray😎 I have glued magnets to heaps of stuff over the years as well. Cheers, mate. Kezza
"Ocke strap"...the only other time I've heard Ocke is the throw line in darts. Are you a darts player? If so, good on ya, mate. Steel tips for the win! Cheers!
I dabble in the darts. But the type of Ocke strap I'm taking about is an elastic stretchy cord haha I will have to Google the dart throw. Cheers mate. Kezza
magnets do work well, but my lathe sits close to a tight corner. So I built a sturdy 16-18" carousel that spins easily on a beefy lazy susan that I scavenged from a chair. It has three tiers with chisels above and rests, chucks, & centers below. It works for me.
Happy New Year to you, mate 👍 I'm new to your channel, and i must say I'm really enjoying it 😁😉 I was considering using magnet strips too, but i was concerned about the magnetism and the grinding particals when sharpening!? Have you had any issues with that? Cheers
Thanks so much for jumping on board mate. I haven't had any issues sharpening and the tool attracting the fine dust no. Is that what you mean? Cheers, mate. Kez
I used to use magnets and magnet strips. The problem I had was that the turning tools became so magnetised it became uncomfortable when it got stuck to the toolrest.
Love magnets. Here is another idea perhaps for your chisels as they get shorter. How to stick wood to steel. Get some of those small round magnets. Drill the right size hole in the wood. Glue the magnet(s) in the hole flush with the surface and now you dont have to re-glue those strips holding the bottom of the chisel handle. Just slide the wood up the steel strip screwed to the wall. Clever bastards are'nt we?
All the best in 2025! Looking forward to your videos this year. Take care my friend and stay healthy and safe.
Thanks so much, Earl. Next week will be a Tower of four boxes. I'm no box maker though Hahah you'll see

Thanks mate. I look forward to hearing how you go with the magnets. The trays are auto motive trays and work a treat on the headstock.
Cheers, Ben.
All the best to you to cobber and thank you🤠

Thank you. It’s a little different to the normal woodturning channel. I appreciate the support mate.
