  • That's right, your favorite modular, stackable, free, open-source vertical-axis wind turbine just got better. Now with over 40(!!) parts, Build-a-VAWT is the most customizable wind turbine you can find. Also, now that this version finally has motor mounts, it is technically a wind turbine -- it is no longer a glorified wind spinner.
If you're new to Build-a-VAWT, check out my first video on the topic, it has a little more beginner-friendly info.

It would definitely take some work but something I was looking at was adding a CVT between the VAWT and Motor. Some sort of battery and controller to constantly adjust the final drive ratio to keep a constant voltage output for battery charging then run lights or whatever else off the battery.

Very cool video. I've seen your wind turbine on Instagram. Great design and so nice that it's all open source. Kudos to you, sir.

Keep up the great work! I love the iterations and new ideas. We need more people leading the way in home wind power. You should look into doing some flywheels if you haven’t already. It would be good to test the power production efficiency of tall turbines vs. short ones. Stay curious, I look forward to future videos.

Thank you so much for all this work putting this system together. I am looking forward to starting to print my own BaV creation soon and starting to generate power. I have a lot of interest in off-grid uses for this.

    Bro !
I think I've finally found someone who's thought process aligns with me !
I kinda think about making things exactly like you do . Most versatile , most efficient , easy to build or teardown , effective and infinitely adaptable , cost efficient if possible .
I'm currently obsessed with generators , motors , EVs , engines , gears and all associated stuff .

Waiting for the next installment to this. I live in the Philippines, and while I’ve been looking at solar power, when we lose power, it’s usually due to a typhoon. It would be nice to have an alternate backup power system that doesn’t rely on wind.
Thank you for your informative and fun videos!

I love your idea and between watching your videos and Robert Murray-Smith's videos I've come up with a great concept.
    1) I want to use 7mm fiberglass driveway markers found locally at Walmart as my axis (possibly I might be able to find a metal sleeve for bearing interface if needed).
    2) I figured why let the 3D printer have all the fun I want to print a frame for top and bottom pieces to use reclaimed sheets of PET from 2 liter soda bottles as my 'wing' material (sustainability)
    3) I want to go BIG I'm thinking hub and 2 wing curves for each frame (2 per section of vawt) should take 2 short prints, then assembly.
    4) and finally taking a nod from RMS's videos I'm wanting to print and wind the coil for an axial flux generator.

Keep up the good work. I'll eventually get a print going and test it out! Do you happen to have any spreadsheet or calculator for testing theory and kinda to tweak and play with?

Yes! I literally just received my direct drive setup, so as of tomorrow I’ll have a stepper motor ready to generate some power lol

Thanks so much, it's exactly what I have been looking for. Regarding the mount to the railing, do you have the files for that in fusion as our railing is round rather that square and I'd like to modify your one to fit. Many thanks

Please mention what voltage and amperage you can expect from a stepper motor generator. It will save others so research.

Love the content and everything your doing, Keep it up! Was thinking it might be interesting to switch the motor mount upside-down so you can have a little printed roof over the motor and any water on the belt would drip down and away from the motor. Make it last a bit longer in weather. Not a request but just a thought.

👍While while ago was trying to glue or paint plastic, that didn't go well.
There is a two part primer called 2k urethane which works as a binding layer. Very $$ toxic smelly like polyester for well vent area with protection.

You shouldn't use stepper motor for generator, should be brushless with constant magnets, like for drones maybe?

Windfluencer, and in my opinion, Build a VAWT should be said like "Vaught" from The Boys akin to "build a bot", its Pitch and Yaw, not 'Pitch and Yow', so applying that "YAW" would be said as "Yow" .... Therefore... we end up at 'Build a Vot'
