    When I first started watching this, I was expecting another "free" electricity video. Boy, was I surprised!! This is really quite brilliant, particularly using such basic tools and materials! With even the most basic 3D printer, I am sure that this gentleman would produce some awesome machines! Keep up the good work! 👍

    Well done!! I'd suggest: 1) Locking between cuts, because the gear is rocking and so not all the teeth come out the same. 2) Making a replacement gear for the one at the bottom, for more precision. Making a ratchet for it is trivial. 3) Improving the shape of the disc so teeth look more like an involute and can mesh properly. 4) Rebuilding the machine in metal so that you can cut aluminium gears, maybe with a cordless drill motor (and it's gearbox), as PVC gears won't hold up very well under speed and load.

      Once you have the tool made, improving it becomes relatively easy as it can 'build itself' the parts needed increasing accuracy with each iteration.

    I think the most valuable thing you have done here is to show people that it is possible for them to do it themselves. This simple machine could be used to cut gears in stronger plastics such as nylon or delrin to give real power handling gears. I believe that these plastics will be forgiving of the lack of precision, and gears made this way will at any rate be as good as injection moulded equivalents. Thank you for sharing this with us!

    This is a classroom machine if I’ve ever seen one. Kids would love to learn how to cut gears. And in the process, they’d learn about geometry. Hands-on is always the way to go.

      What "kids" are capable of the math involved here do you mean "teenagers" ? as in 7th and 8th grade? because here in America they don't teach the applicable math until high school.

    • @ronliebermann
      @ronliebermann Рік тому

      @@ryoung6730 I have years of experience as a classroom teacher. With children age seven to fourteen, the key to all activities is hands-on involvement.
      Look: Kids don’t learn anything by just looking at a computer screen, and answering questions. It’s a complete waste of time.
      With this gear-cutting machine, the first hundred exercises wouldn’t require any decision-making. The cuts are vertical, on blank wooden gears with lines printed on them. So the exercise just gives them practice in cutting. There’s nothing else. Then there are a a couple of hundred more exercises.
      Twenty, just following the lines with a 90 degree angle cuts going-in.
      Twenty just following the lines with a 45 degree angle cut going-in.
      Twenty just following the lines with a 30 degree angle cuts going-in.
      Twenty just following the lines with 90, 45, and 30 degree angle cuts mixed together. All going-in.
      And finally, the whole process is repeated, but with the cuts angling outward instead of inward.
      That program should take about six weeks. And the cutting can be done on a scroll saw with an angle-vice. The kids would learn how to use a scroll saw, how to recognize gear teeth, and how to set the angle of the cut. No math. That’s a beginning.

    I feel humbled watching your video! I've always had a lot of ideas of things to make or create but always had in mind "if I only had this or that tool, I would realize my project". And here you are with some old scrap, some pieces of PVC and an amazing ingenuity creating complex devices from nothing. Great job man!

Absolutely brilliant design in my opinion and I really want now to build one myself for making some plastic or even small bronze gears. I also think some parts could be easly 3d printed to make it more accurate.

    I am a career fabricator and amatuer mathamatician, you my friend, are a very talented individual even if you are just fabricating this by memory from what you have learned elsewhere it is an amazing feat of engineering and math. I could come close to recreating what you have done but it would not only take me weeks or months it would also be inferior to your casual efforts. amazing. One question though.. Why is someone like you posting videos on YT instead of applying yourself on a more serious level? your skillset would be an asset for so many, i hope someone watched this and is now employing you for real life earnings.
