The singer and songwriter has created and released countless hit tunes and albums over the course of her storied career. I immediately fell in love with her voice when I heard her singing with Gram Parsons in the early ‘70s. I was a musician and college radio DJ and was blown away.
I saw her singing backup with gram parsons in a fifty seater club outside of Fenway park in march 1973. Unforgettable

Yes!! that's where I saw them with my cousin Brian. The club was opposite the left field wall maybe on the corner where Cask n Flagon has been for years(?). Turned me on to her and Gram's music for a lifetime!
It was my privilege to see , AND hear , Emmy Lou Harris and the Hot Band , at The Prairie Lady , in OKC , about 1977 . A concert I will never forget !
She's an amazing musician and has a humble, heartwarming soul. Beautiful inside and out. Love her music.👍😀🎸
She has the voice of an angel, I can’t believe that they didn’t even mention all the work that she has done with Rodney Crowell.
Those two together are perfection personified.
Her duet album with Mark Knopfler "All the Road Running" is my favourite collaboration. "Love and Happiness" is an absolute joy to listen to, I have to hear it a couple of times every day.
How about the fact she worked in Ricky Skaggs band before venturing out on her own?

I I am a big fan of all 3 of them.
In 1975 I went to a Uriah Heep concert. Opening acts were Elvin Bishop and Emmylou. The promoter must have been eating Quaaludes for days before booking that lineup!
Emmylou took the stage in front of the curtain with an acoustic guitar and a bar stool. Sat down and began to croon soft melodies in a folksy manner...which was certainly NOT what we had come to hear. In moments tears began to streak her lovely face but she never let on. She just sat there and continued her set. After a bit the crowd settles down and Emmylou got a grip on things and became...well, one of the gurls that, over the course of time, has stolen my heart. Such a courageous performance in front of a hostile crowd has, arguably, never before been freely given.
Since then this ol' metalhead still perks up at the mention of her name. I still play both of the trio collaboration albums...in times of quiet reflection.
She had plenty of experience with less-than-attentive situations in DC at the dives and shitholes... those crowds were worthy of chicken wire in front of the stage!
Happy Birthday Emmylou- a young 74 years old today. Long may you keep entertaining us with your magical lilt. 🌈🥇🎤🎸

In the early 70's, us northern Arizona mountain boys were in love with 4 female country singers.: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Jessi Colter and Emmylou! Hearing them on the AM radio in the remote, high places, where we hung out, were some of the best times in the lives of perpetually 18 yr old boys.
An amazing and talented woman with a distinguished career. To me she is among the elite musicians.

I admire any woman who survived the music industry and prospered! The 50s and 60s were incredibly rapacious towards artists, even the Rolling Stones got royally screwed over during their American years of huge success in the 70s....they lost millions. A young woman in the business was lucky to get out alive, much less successful.
And British years back then. All groups we’re screwed back in the 50’s and sixties by management and their labels.I believe the Stones were the pioneers who changed all that. Not 100% sure....just 99. Lol

I have been a fan of her for many years. Her voice is so beautiful! I’m so lucky to live in Nashville where I see her out in public and she is very friendly and wonderful. ❤️💕

I've been fan of Emmylou Harris from the 70s, I have albums on vinyl of Emmylou from when I bought them back in the early 70s. She was beautiful then and she's still beautiful now.. just love her voice. I've been playing her album hard bargain I just love it I have it in the car, everytime I go shopping Emmylou comes on It's been in the player for months, Just don't get sick of it. I have 3 albums I listen to constantly in recent years - Hard Bargain (2011), Spyboy '(98) and Western Walls : The Tucson Sessions ('99) with Linda Ronstadt who had been my favourite female singer for a long time. Now it's close to 50 / 50.

She was not a main stream country artist. She went her own way and met "rebel" artists that gave her a respected genre within country music and country folk. She is a lovely lady with a distinguished career.

Odd, there was no mention of her great collaboration with Mark Knopfler on "All the Road-running". Not just a just a song but an entire album. A great album and a great duo.

Very odd indeed. One of the great albums, with the album from the tour "Real Live Roadrunning" (2006) being even more impressive.

Country music wasn't in my environment growing up in Boston. But my parents were from Ireland and we always had traditional music playing. I came upon Emmylou from exploring bluegrass in the early 80s. It was Roses in the Snow and Angel Band that made Emmylou an obsession.
I was lucky enough to spend time with her and get to know her . She was fun to be around ..
I saw Emmy Lou perform impromptu at the Palomino club in Hollywood many years ago, I believe I went to see Asleep at the Wheel (if memory serves) and they pulled her out of the audience to join them. Absolutely stunning. However, this bio is sorely missing a major puzzle piece by not mentioning the Hot Band, musicians who played with her for something like 15 years. Players rotated, but always first rate musicians. And yes, I fell in love with her just like lots of other guys who watched her sing way back then.

*Actually her first work with Gram Parsons, was on His 1st solo LP, "GP". "Grievous Angel" was the 2nd LP*
Bought Grievous Angel when it first came out and it remains one of my very favorite albums to this day.
What an incredible career Emilou has had but my all time favourite was to see her on the Last Waltz with the Band singing Evangeline so many great artists and performances on that film and to round it off with that song Emilou singing Evangeline was magnificent God bless her.
I’ve loved her singing for decades. A few years ago, I was awestruck to have her aboard one of my Southwest flights out of Cali to Nashville. Fan crush, starry eyed! My much younger crew members kept asking me, “who’s that?”. Silly kids.

Patrick O'Grady: Very few know that she was the star attraction in the summer of 1979 at an open air music festival in a rural field, Lisdoonvarna, Ireland. Those were the days.
People probably underestimate how much her big brain contributed to her talent and success. She also very much seems like she was born with an old soul.
Saw her about 4 years ago when she opened for John Mellencamp at the Greek Theatre. She was wonderful. He was INCREDIBLE.
Emmylou is from the Washington DC area, her parents used to live out in the Virginia Countryside. Me and my two Buddy, Glenn and Buckie use to go as often as possible at The Cellardoor in Georgtown DC. Our jaws always dropped when we saw her . Man she was then and now the most gorgeous singer/song writer of that time. I love you Emmylou !

Did you know that her father was cited in the code of conduct section in the Marine's Handbook as the example of how to behave under torture as a prisoner of war? He was very badly treated by the Chinese in the Korean war. Emmylou has good genes.

I played in the same coffeehouse in Virginia Beach as Emmylou in the late 1960’s before she became famous. It was called the “Upstairs” coffeehouse and a guy by the name of Doc owned it. Emmylou was very talented even back then and used to sing a song called “Roll, Turn, Spin.” We did folk music back then. Every once in awhile you could sneak in a country song as long as it had a folksy sound.

Great segment! Emmylou is arguably the most under-appreciated artist of all time. She has dozens more collaborations and duets (Dan Fogelberg, Mark Knopfler, many others). In my humble opinion, two of her albums, Wrecking Ball and Red Dirt Girl, are right up there with Dark Side of The Moon by Pink Floyd, What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, and OK Computer by Radiohead as the greatest albums of all time. Her voice is genuinely unique and incredibly compelling.

I suspect her reticence to fame is a humble recognition of the pain she felt long ago. When you carry her level of beauty, she probably always feels the need to eschew fame in order to avoid pain. Agape love is the hardest cross to bear.

Gram Parson was the artist who made traditional country music cool and acceptable to a whole generation of young Americans. I wish he would go into the country music hall of fame.

In 1975 I heard Emmylou Harris singing 'Making Believe' on the radio, went out and bought the album. have been a fan since then, despite having a rather eclectic taste in music ranging from Deep Purple (2) over Petula Clark and Neil Diamond to Roy Orbison and Leonard Cohen, I have always listened to Emmylou and up to Red Dirt Girl collected her albums on vynil. Alas, they all got lost in a flooding of my house and I have yet to replace them but with Utube, I don't need to because I can listen to her magical voice whenever I like.

A few years ago, there was a video of Emmylou and Arlo Guthrie singing Woody's "Deportee". It is lovely. Unfortunately it no longer seems to be available on YT or anywhere else. If you could find that, it would be delightful.

I didn't care about country music,i even hated it. Then i borrowed an EMMYLOU record,it was "Luxury liner" and i became intrigued. She is still going strong and makes bold moves, "Wrecking ball" was a very brave record.

EL and GP is the only true Star is Born story. Not Streisand and Kris. Not Cooper and GaGa. Not Frederic March. Don't know why a movie hasn't been made of their story or of Gram's life. Would be a greàt story on film if done right. All that is needed is the truth and the facts. Only one person could play EL But she won't. Too painful. But would be a great tribute to her and his career.
Graham Parsons monikered & promoted "Cosmic American Music." It was a hybrid of Country, Folk, R&B, Soul, & Rock. Parsons was from FL with its wide musical influences. /// NOT MENTIONED there were frequent jam sessions at Parson's house with Emmylou. They were an item, & he was her North Star. Losing him was a devastating soul gut punch.

His first name was Gram, which was short for Ingram. I don’t think he and Emmy Lou were sexually involved. You are right. He was married. Unhappily. But Emmylou once told a British press reporter that she knew she had fallen in love with Gram and she was about to tell him, but decided not to do it over the phone, but to wait until she went back to LA to join him to do the tour promoting his second album. And then, she said, she got the call saying he was dead. Most of the songs that she does are really about him.

Sometime in the mid sixties, she was playing in the Santa Cruz area on Halloween. She saw me and a friend looking in at the theater entrance. She came out and asked if we wanted to come in. She was in a sort of cat outfit. I didn’t recognize her until she got on stage. I am still carrying the thrill of that. ❤

I completely agree with you that Emmylou Harris is totally brilliant and I love her music, but just because that is the case it doesn't give you a good reason to discard today's fantastic artists and this generation of minds. Be understanding because the world is in chaos caused by early generations and we are the ones having to clean that up. I agree that some music today is total crap, but you can't discount the amazing music that is currently being made. Your apology for "today's lot" is not necessary in the way you meant it because we are living in a more accepting and loving world than the people born in the 60s had with racism, sexism, and homophobia.
