Also, I have to say, not only was Dredd one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, but it's also theoretically one of the best sequel-spawning stories. "Dredd responds to a crime and things escalate" is a premise that could weather several dozen seasons on Netflix and never get old.
Dredd didn't flop because of it's simple premise. Dredd flopped because the marketing was just terrible. All of the trailers did nothing to show how cool the movie was and just pushed the 3D gimmick that everyone was sick of by that point. I love Dredd but even I didn't go see it in the theater because I was like "Oh great, another 3D cash grab."

The opening song, "Starless" by King Crimson, is perfect for this movie. It's a really long song, and the first half is super somber and beautiful, and then halfway through it takes a hard turn and becomes very weird, dark, and dissonant until the end.

Pretty sure Dredd got no studio support on advertising. I think it did better in the UK where they actually did spend a bit. But Dredd was damned good.

One thing I think should be mentioned about "Mandy" is the music from the late composer Johann Johannsson. The score definitely adds to the hypnotic feel and tone of the film -- it makes you feel like you're on an acid trip.

Jack Rogers I see it as more of unrefined ideas on autism being pumped into a Hollywood film. It’s not terrible, and autism may be the evolutionary future of biological humans. But every idea was handled with as little care as possible. Like a hipster writer had big ideas but couldn’t conceptualize them into a film.

I totally had the same reaction regarding Brown's character. Had no idea he had died and pretty much just assumed he was dead because he stopped showing up. It makes me feel better that I wasn't the only one.
They modified Arri Alexa’s to work with vintage Panavision lenses to get that film look. Most of it was captured in camera with a small percentage being post-process. Panos wanted to shoot Mandy on film but budget constraints forced him not to.
I'm glad Mandy got some love on this channel. Yes it's definitely not for everyone, but people should really see this on the big screen at least once if they get the chance. I can't wait to see it again in theaters at least a couple more times.
Saw this as my birthday gift with someone who hates these kinds of films, that's love. This film is really quite good if you're into psychadellic imagery. That score too.
I understand that, if seeing the movie would mean I had to cover some additional expenses, I'd think twice as well. As for the film being put on more screens, sadly that's not up to the filmmaker... not only is it a fairly low-budget film, it's also for mature audiences AND it's not even for the general public, it's quite niche to a certain extent, so putting it on more screens would inevitably, probably result in loss of money as opposed to an improved box office result... which I'm guessing is why the film was released online a week ago.

Fun fact: the actor who plays Jeremiah Sands (the evil cult leader) in Mandy is named Linus Roache, and he also appeared as Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne's dad, in Nolan's Batman films. I thought his performance was fantastic and Oscar-worthy (in Mandy, that is).
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression he would test his LSD on the tiger. I think he said something like, "You know it's good when she's calm." Which raises the question, what would LSD do to a tiger.

Okay hear me out here. I love Shane Black. I like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and his neo noir comedy style. But that style does not mesh well with the Predator Mythos. The original was so great because on the surface it seems like a generic 80's action sci fi film, but the way John Mctiernan crafted the film was amazing. It is a slow burn like a fine cigar. The film starts as 80s over the top action. Then it slowly is stripped away into a foray of a primal cat and mouse game. It is the most dangerous game, but an alien is the hunter. The incredible score, the tension, and suspense. This new film just doesn't have that. I could not of thought of a better director to make their comeback for this film than John Mctiernan. He directed the greatest action movie of all time(Die Hard). And why is it great? Because the guy understands suspense, setting up the environment, setup/payoff, and nuance. Hell, I would have been fine if Black just wrote the script and did punch ups like he did for the first film. Mctiernan is a master of his craft and deserves to pull a George Miller ala Fury Road return. What is your guys thoughts on this?

Just saw Mandy on dvd- amazing. The cinematography is groundbreaking imo. Extreme Lighting, interesting editing, dream-like lens flares . Never boring . Probably the best Nicolas Cage performance ive seen since Leaving Las Vegas.
“Get to the choppers” was the most eye rolling moment 😴. And they turned her into the damsel in distress by the dart gun so they can have that rescue scene - absolutely hilarious 😂
That goblin commercial came on and the 7 of us audience members in the theater just glanced at eachother and started chuckling. At that moment I think we all realized that things were taking a major turn towards goofy city, with the next stop being the snorting a heaping pile of coke off of that glass shard. Had us rolling. Best $5 I've ever spent in my life, honestly.
I enjoyed Beyond The Black Rainbow and it sounds like Mandy is very similar. BTBR starts out so psychological and ends as a slasher film. Mike and Jay talk about a switch for Mandy as well between the first and second acts, it sounds like a Director's signature. I can't wait to see what Panos Cosmatos does in the future. Also, I see that Elijah Wood is listed as a Producer, he is really pushing a lot of indie stuff now a days.

I like how in that bathroom scene in Mandy there was just a wide shot with no cuts. From a movie so stylized such a scene would get a lot more focus, lights, quick cuts and him looking into the mirror and shit but i think on purpose it had nothing but him thrashing around! When I first read this I thought it was 1 movie called "Mandy and the Predator". I was picturing a goofy road-trip movie with a sorority girl trying to find herself and her estranged father while her buddy, the predatory, hunted down commandos for bloodsport. Predator is a classic film something we can all agree on. Predator 2 and Predators were better than they had any right to be - both were decent sequels. The Predator looked terrible from the trailers and I'm not shocked or surprised by the critical reaction.
Alien vs Predator showed that they can work together with other species as long as they are worthy and honorable. AvP: Requiem showed that if you make a movie too dark for a theater showing, you get a shitty movie.

My friend had a Nice Cage theme birthday party early this year where we watched Cage movies the whole time. A birthday cake with Cage's face on it, mask party favors for us all to wear, and movie posters all over the living room. We had a decent mix of weird cage and good cage. One thing I think should be mentioned about "Mandy" is the music from the late composer Johann Johannsson. The score definitely adds to the hypnotic feel and tone of the film -- it makes you feel like you're on an acid trip.

Jack Rogers I see it as more of unrefined ideas on autism being pumped into a Hollywood film. It’s not terrible, and autism may be the evolutionary future of biological humans. But every idea was handled with as little care as possible. Like a hipster writer had big ideas but couldn’t conceptualize them into a film.
I keep being labelled so myself, and have to wonder each time what possible stereotype is in someone's head, or being popularised.

They make the CRAZIEST stuff that's just an absolute riot, and you won't find a sense of humor like Justin and Griffin's anywhere else. I *strongly* recommend you start with "Exploding Shepard's Face Bones in Mass Effect 2"; that and "What if Dark Souls Were Made of Pizza?" both of which are pretty much exactly what they sound like, haha.
Down the Rabbit Hole is also a soothing channel! Fredrik is something of an internet historian, extensively cataloguing such phenomena as Chris Chan, vaporwave, The SCP Foundation, and many, many more. He also has a soothing voice, and he's very well-spoken, to boot! His content is fascinating.

About Dredd and dumb audiences, Karl Urban claims it's a marketing failure, not a failure of the movie itself citing that the DVD sales were 750 000 in the first week. And I didn't hear about it from anywhere but people who I know. I also loved it.

I totally had the same reaction regarding Brown's character. Had no idea he had died and pretty much just assumed he was dead because he stopped showing up. It makes me feel better that I wasn't the only one.
I think I saw his death, but it was so...ridiculous, that my brain almost skipped it.
I think the only movies with simple plots executed well I've seen in the last decade are John Wick, Fury Road and Dredd.
The Raid also fits into that category for me. It's Dredd but with martial arts ;p
I'd add Upgrade, Bone Tomahawk, Don't Breathe and The Green Room.

They modified Arri Alexa’s to work with vintage Panavision lenses to get that film look. Most of it was captured in camera with a small percentage being post-process. Panos wanted to shoot Mandy on film but budget constraints forced him not to.

Saw this as my birthday gift with someone who hates these kinds of films, that's love. This film is really quite good if you're into psychadellic imagery. That score too.

I understand that, if seeing the movie would mean I had to cover some additional expenses, I'd think twice as well. As for the film being put on more screens, sadly that's not up to the filmmaker... not only is it a fairly low-budget film, it's also for mature audiences AND it's not even for the general public, it's quite niche to a certain extent, so putting it on more screens would inevitably, probably result in loss of money as opposed to an improved box office result... which I'm guessing is why the film was released online a week ago.
I relate to what Jay says re: cheddar goblin and the world doesn’t care about your problems because back in like 2nd grade I found out my grandmother died while the tv was playing a Wishbone salad dressing commercial. I barely remember my grandmother’s voice but that stupid commercial jingle has been etched into my mind for the past 25 years. Fun fact: the actor who plays Jeremiah Sands (the evil cult leader) in Mandy is named Linus Roache, and he also appeared as Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne's dad, in Nolan's Batman films. I thought his performance was fantastic and Oscar-worthy (in Mandy, that is).

I believe the "You know it's good when she's calm" is in reference to him not grabbing the gun when the blood-soaked mad-man shows up - he thinks he's safe from Cage because the tiger isn't reacting to him.
Okay hear me out here. I love Shane Black. I like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and his neo noir comedy style. But that style does not mesh well with the Predator Mythos. The original was so great because on the surface it seems like a generic 80's action sci fi film, but the way John Mctiernan crafted the film was amazing. It is a slow burn like a fine cigar. The film starts as 80s over the top action. Then it slowly is stripped away into a foray of a primal cat and mouse game. It is the most dangerous game, but an alien is the hunter. The incredible score, the tension, and suspense. This new film just doesn't have that. I could not of thought of a better director to make their comeback for this film than John Mctiernan. He directed the greatest action movie of all time(Die Hard). And why is it great? Because the guy understands suspense, setting up the environment, setup/payoff, and nuance. Hell, I would have been fine if Black just wrote the script and did punch ups like he did for the first film. Mctiernan is a master of his craft and deserves to pull a George Miller ala Fury Road return. What is your guys thoughts on this?

Just saw Mandy on dvd- amazing. The cinematography is groundbreaking imo. Extreme Lighting, interesting editing, dream-like lens flares . Never boring . Probably the best Nicolas Cage performance ive seen since Leaving Las Vegas.

I enjoyed Beyond The Black Rainbow and it sounds like Mandy is very similar. BTBR starts out so psychological and ends as a slasher film. Mike and Jay talk about a switch for Mandy as well between the first and second acts, it sounds like a Director's signature. I can't wait to see what Panos Cosmatos does in the future. Also, I see that Elijah Wood is listed as a Producer, he is really pushing a lot of indie stuff now a days.

I like how in that bathroom scene in Mandy there was just a wide shot with no cuts. From a movie so stylized such a scene would get a lot more focus, lights, quick cuts and him looking into the mirror and shit but i think on purpose it had nothing but him thrashing around! The emptiness and the stillness was nice!

Predator is a classic film something we can all agree on. Predator 2 and Predators were better than they had any right to be - both were decent sequels. The Predator looked terrible from the trailers and I'm not shocked or surprised by the critical reaction.

Can we talk about Nicolas Cage for a sec? Because he’s genuinely still an incredibly talented actor. He just has to take a lot of bad roles to pay off his debts. Watch Joe, Bad Lieutenant and of course Adaptation and Leaving Las Vegas.

Nobody doubts that. He is great. But yeah, he has to take literally almost any job offered willing to pay due to the debts. Often the problem is this means he is not available for the big roles even if they did want him to be like Superman. DC isn't going to sit around waiting for you to finish your shit tier horror movie.
Honestly a tragedy. When allowed to do his own thing he makes characters memorable.
Same thing with Brendan Frasier. Poor guy is locked in a never ending crappy movie stream till he pays his greedy ex-wife.

My friend had a Nice Cage theme birthday party early this year where we watched Cage movies the whole time. A birthday cake with Cage's face on it, mask party favors for us all to wear, and movie posters all over the living room. We had a decent mix of weird cage and good cage. Snake Eyes, Vampires Kiss, and that one with Michael Being where Cage wears sunglasses and a moustache lol.
Thank you for showing my favorite movie of all time Apocalypse Now. Any time I can get a glimpse, I'm happy. Even if it's the half naked, drunk, bleeding Martin Sheen scene.
