There are many messaging apps that bill themselves as being "private", but which ones actually are?
We dig into Whatsapp, iMessage, Telegram, Signal, Session, Threema, Wire, and Matrix to tell you what's what. (TLDR: Not all of these "privacy apps" are actually private!!!)

Anything associated with facebook should be considered as malware and spyware by default.

I use Signal. But as you stated, it can be difficult to convince others to download and use the platform. That has, for me, been the toughest part of private messaging.
Keep trying, it can take a while but there are tricks you can use
@@NaomiBrockwellTV Hi Naomi, any tips? After changing to Android from iPhone texting with my girlfriend has been miserable lol.
@@NaomiBrockwellTV Signal's SMS messaging stopped yesterday on Android. I'm looking for an alternative to Signal without going to Google's native messaging app. I knew you spoke about Threema before, but I just saw bad comments about its security.
I preferred threema but had that issue, switched to signal
This wasn't a problem with signal until they dropped the backward compatibility SMS support. Which makes it difficult to use and requires another possible vulnerable app
This channel deserves at least a million subscribers. Naomi's videos are always informative and entertaining, love those funny catches.
That is your personal opinion. Others make their own choices. The amount of followers and likes has nothing to do with quality.
Jack Dorsey praising Signal. Oh, the hypocrisy.
In a more literal sense, you wouldn't expect the CEO of McDonalds to eat the garbage his company sells.
Signal is NSA's. Just like ProtonMail was owned by the FBI.
In 1983, when I bought my first pc, whe starter to talk about the right way to manage encription and password.
40 years seem blown away...
If its not open source, then none of the other stuff matters. It's just marketing.
Actually free software
Session's decentralized approach for the long run win.
no, bc. of blockchain, and lack of PFS
@@climatechangedoesntbargain9140 which one would you suggest?
Naomi, you are my fav channel to watch. Great information, but you deliver like 1000%. An amazing treat... hooked :)
Really appreciate you!
Thanks for this! I recently switched to signal but trying to get my friends to do the same is proving difficult. I’m sending them the link to this video! Perhaps then they’ll get it :) I really think people should be more aware than they appear to be.
Simple, short and informative. Thanks Naomi!
Interesting, thanks. What I learned from this: 1. The smaller my digital footprint, the better. 2. There is a false notion that your choices drive the market and that this is the only control you have of how this all goes. 3. I am right not to use a smartphone and/or apps. 4. the future - in a sane world - would be analogue
You completely forgot Briar, it has all the requirements and it is trusted by journalists in conflict zones. No centralized server, open source, no identifiable personal data and NO phone number required. All its comms are routed through Tor. Without it the rest of the world would not know what is going on in Madagascar, in Haiti, in Myanmar, in South Africa, in Cuba, in Ethiopia, in Afghanistan, China or in Nigeria. Even Mohammad IV of Morocco trembles at the thought of Briar. 😅
@CZARFACE Not so. Try to NOT get your news from social sites. 🙄
All these could have just been avoided if they left the 3G signal alone and everyone was content with a regular phone and the internet separate! The devil is within!
Do you use Briar,, no phone to access ?
Yet it isn't available on iOS.
Briar is texting only which sucks.
The handy part of signal I find is the desk top program. So I dont have to use the phone when I am on the PC. Makes sending pics and links easy peasy.
WhatsApp problem was never the tech, but the untrustworthy parent company. If you trust someone with Mark's track record, you deserve to be screwed. Same with Apple. Common people, use your brains!
People: "no, I don't want to, take info and anything else"
You are very good.
The two videos of yours I just watched will be invaluable and have kind of a poetic justice as I'm one of the most monitored and shadow banned people on the planet.
Thank you Naomi, a really thorough explanation along with clarity and useful brevity.
Thank you for saying so!
Yeah, there is nothing else to add.

Great video. Thank you so much, Naomi.
Absolutely excellent video ! I enjoyed it and learned from it a lot !
Thank you very much and may God bless you always !
Thank you!!
Outdated though.
So well presented ... Happy Element was mentioned and Wire. Less popular... Way more safe
Ok, this is the 4th or 5ft very informative video I watched from this channel, guess it's a "signal" to subscribe. Well done.👍
Welcome aboard!
I am one of the ones that dumped WhatsApp and switched to Signal but nobody I know uses it they prefer giving all their info to Zuck!
Idiots 👍
Invite them.
Gr8 review , it’s very educative.Thank you
An excellent messenger, I advise everyone to watch the video who knows English ...
Great video... Keep it up.. Waiting for more interesting videos from you

Excellent video.
wow thank you naomi :)
What a minefield Naomi. Thank you.
Люблю смотреть ваши видео очень интересно спасибо жду новых выпусков
To me, Element/Matrix is my favorite, I also think its signup process is way easier than it is with signal as you don't need a donor phone number.
Threema is also killer. $5 USD for it though.
@@awilywolf No it is not! if it requires to register at 3rd party to do a payment to get an ID. Also threemas server is closed source!
@@fnordpol Session?
I use Signal exclusively. I didn't hear Naomi mention that Signal can also replace your phone's SMS/text app. I use Signal as both a messenger and for SMS. Nice to have both in the same app.
That’s a great point
signal has proven itself over and not to mention its illegal in china. just a couple things you have to remember in signal unless you enable disappearing messages and never use archive and dont do backups.
i do same but dont have a single friend on signal. still think using it better than what comes with phone
@@bobjeandulac2797 I'm pretty sure that not EVERY (or any) app can replace the stock SMS app, but that was NOT my point. My point was that I can ALSO use Signal as my SMS app. And I don't think anyone is being "fooled by that" SMS texts on Signal are not encrypted, but nor are texts on stock SMS apps encrypted. Using Signal as my messaaging app and SMS app are just a matter of convenience. Thanks!
@@bobjeandulac2797 am i at least a little more protected using signal for SMS vs stock texting app in some way?
Thank you!!!!!
So now I have Signal, how do I message you Naomi?
Haha, another great video!
Session is the best
Why do they have the backdoor open for the ausie government?🤔😂
Ooh! Ice cream truck!
How do you deal with people who say "Oh, I have nothing to hide, so let them read my data" 😱
I try telling them that just because you want privacy doesn't mean you're hiding something. But it's a tough sell.!
Tell thrm to share their purchase history& account name & pass
@@AcidiFy574 They probably would do that too.
@@junaid2606 bank accounts??
@Junaid Tell them it's like saying you are against free speech just because you have nothing to say. It's like having a shower and allowing the creep to take pics of you without your permission.
It's not that I have anything to hide, I just have nothing I wish you to see 🙂

I will try Wire now that Signal doesn't support SMS. It would be nice to get a report update on this industry ❤
Naomi can you do a vid on most private/best password manager?
Telegram fixed described problem right after it appears during Hong Kong protest. Information not actual anymore, video is long outdated despite it's a three days old only.
It's important to understand that Signal segregates messages from any messages that you've sent with other apps. If you stop using Signal, you have to keep it installed to see the messages sent and received with it. You cannot integrate those messages back into the main body of your non-Signal messages. Signal also stores messages in a location on the phone different from the normal one, so backup apps that send your messages to an email inbox for long-term storage and access will not work with it.
Good! Why would anyone want to save a message anyway?
@@me4654 It's not good, because they do not make this clear when you install the app. And many people actually do save their messages, often to an email server, but this ability is broken when you install the Signal app. As to the why, I would venture that there are nearly as many reasons as there are people who do it.
Kinda the point of apps like signal is to make messages disappear after a time. Not save them. Like a IRL conversation.
@@MostlyInteresting No, the point of apps like Signal is to stop others from being able to read your communications. Automatic deletion is a possible feature with obvious utility, but not the main point. And regardless of their intentions, app developers should always make it crystal clear when their apps break existing functionality in Android.
it's not a bad thing to do, it does make it more private, but I do think they should make that clear when setting it up.
I wish you had also mentioned XMPP
good shot
Good content, thanks and keep up the good job!
I have a question: how Signal and all of the other apps sustain the costs if they're not collecting data? Servers, electricity, developers, support and so on is a lot of money
Signal is a non profit, they’re funded by a giant donation from Acton (see my update on signal video) and now users can also support the foundation. I am a paying user
Buy Signal Sustainer, me & my brother have it so we look cool I'm group chats.
all very good applications
very interesting

Signal is great.
You can activate e-t-e encryption an iCloud now

Thanks for the useful infos! What about Viber? I use it daily, but there are more and more hiccups every day like not being able to send msgs or they dont get them. So Im thinking about changing.
I recommend Signal
Thanks
Virtually all FREE apps sell your person information including your habits and places you visit (location)
Props to you for having Edward Snowden's picture on the wall. Mad respect.
For important conversations i always use Digital radio (walkie-talkie) with encryption. No one can hear what we talking and even if they manage to decode it will be too late. :D :D
If I was sitting next to you I would be able to hear what you are saying. Or if someone was sitting next to your recipient they could also hear you. Digital Walkie is nothing more than E2E voice chat. Its basically using a normal phone but one-way two-way comms. Meaning you talk and the other person has to wait until you send and they respond, etc. Its basically vent or TS3 or (now discord) but the other person cannot interrupt you while you are talking because it records a compressed audio file with low bitrate, sends it, then deletes it. True walkies use real time on the bandwidth that everyone can use unless opsec us using a secure channel, but secure channels can still be decrypted - but real time radio channel decryption is harder than it used to be. Its probably best to just use a text-based E2EE program/app that has zero to little metadata and doesnt req. a phone number. There are a few out there, but its very hard to find good ones.
@@alfredharrison597 That why i say: It will be too late when someone find what we talk about.
You should do a piece on other popular apps and break it down like that. Even though it may be obvious, but still nice to be able to show that to people about apps like Snapchat, Instagram, tiktok, etc. etc.
@Naomi Brockwell ••• The joke is on you, fake Naomi account: I don't use whatsapp anymore.
signal cant be used it requires a phone to begin with .. not just for security reasons for many others too i dont have or own any phone any longer for like 20 years now i stopped using phones
so what is the non-phone number version of Signal? if they change that requirement than anonymous accounts can and another layer of privacy.
Hey Naomi - how about a blockchain-based messenger?
You advacate using a differant phonumber for Signal. So pay for anothar cellular contract just for Signale messaging? Or can the cellulars provide an alturnate number for your contract on request?
Yeah how does one get a phone number anonymously?
@@scotter You don't.
Moreover, everything with a phone number is subject to CALEA and PATRIOT Act legislation which facilitate warrantless wiretapping.
I can cite court transcripts with Signal logs submitted as evidence. I wouldn't trust it, at all.

Telegram is the best. My god, how many & how good the stickers are. Normal and animated, also cool gifs in it's pool. Telegram have the most features. Probably all the features. And it has no ads as viber and doesn't belong to disgusting facebook as whatsapp. Also a looot of settings and even animated user photos, actually short videos. I really love it.
Another fantastic video

What about SMS apps?
Sometimes I need to send message to friends who doesn't have Signal, only whatsapp. The SMS app installed on my phone is from Google.
What another alternative and private app to send SMS/MMS?
What about the keyboard you use to write your messages? They collect metadata so no matter what app permissions these apps have, they still collect the data depending on your keyboard app
A very important point that's mostly overlooked.
