- Ralph Waldo Emerson discusses the importance of self-reliance, to the individual, society, and all of humanity.
*Note, this is a re-take of a previous narration I created for this Emerson essay.
What an incredible work. Its unfortunate western societies have moved far away from the idea of the virtuous self and more towards materialism as the measure of personal worth.
Well said. My Grandfather's generation lived much more in line with these concepts.

If I had to pick one writer who shaped my thinking more than any other it would be Emerson, along with his compadres, Whitman and Thoreau. He’s so eminently quotable and here are my Top 10 favourites of his:
1. *Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.*
2. *Make your own Bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.*
3. *It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.*
4. *Once you make a decision, the Universe conspires to make it happen*
5. *Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.*
6. *A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day.*
7. *You become what you think about all day long.*
8. *The good news is that the moment you decide that what you know is more important than what you have been taught to believe, you will have shifted gears in your quest for abundance. Success comes from within, not from without.*
9. *Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.*
10. *There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried.*
Like the stars ✨ in the firmament there are countless others, but perhaps I should end with this, thereby not taking Emerson’s advice: *I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.*
God will not have his work done by cowards, if I had to pick 1 at this point
From his heart, to yours then mine, we wun be for we begun. To be a man cleaver is my forever endeavor
N I G E R L Y N O T W I T H L O V E
To be great is to be misunderstood. There is an entire novel in that sentence.
There’s an entire library within this relatively short essay. Most of it goes completely ignored.
I understand you.
I hate that quote. Misused by many who just belief they are great
I love your thinking. We are on a similar vibration.

The work of the transcendentalists is the best American literature and one of the highest productions of the human mind on earth.

"It's self-relyin' time" -Ralph Waldo Emerson
"The gods loved him because man hated him." I have been made a fan of Emerson. This was perfect to set my focus for the day. I'll certainly look more into his work.
"Imitation is suicide" lightning bolt
Wow. This book touched me in the ways no other book did, not that I read many... I've found lots of passages here making a lot of intuitive sense to me, and I could relate them to my life experience.
I’m glad you enjoyed this, and thanks for the positive comment. This is my most favorite piece of writing, ever.
What a jam! Such an amazing resource to have as an audiobook. Thanks for putting this together! 💪📚
I really like some of the points he’s making here and then he says being virtuous is a deceitful apology and I kinda think he’s just projecting again
I think some people are obviously better than others but at the same time every person is in some ways better than any other therefore we need to create a culture in which people are self reliant . We need an education system in which kids discover their strengths and those strengths are cultivated and also kids need to be taught how to think critically.
Beyond perfect timing.

This book and Henry David Thoreau's Walden are two of my favorite reads of all time. Thanks for creating this. I'm enjoying listening to it.

Great job Gregg 💪🏾 I am very appreciated 👑. I am the center 😃☀️☀️
Thank you... what a sage
No matter how many times I hear/read Self Reliance, I still get that same electric charge.
By any chance did he write this when Thoreau was squatting in his cabin in his backyard and eating dinner at his house every night? Because that would be an epic level of shade.
Thank you SOOO much for your uploads :) You're doing great work!!!

Great Job!
Emerson walked so Nietzsche could run
It's funny. This analogy works in two waytsince he's sort of like a laid back Nietzsche.
Both were full of crap.
Still just his opinion and by his own standard we must not live by his words but by our own truths!
Men in American society should all take a good hard listen to this.
I was recommended this but I didn't realize it was poetry. I'm afraid I don't have a grasp of this kind of writing needless to say I won't get the message either.

1) man, there is a lot of wisdom in this essay. It looks as though this essay in itself is a particle of life. Thank God for old school wisdom
2)It is a shame
That today's younger folk wouldn't take the time to read this essay.
3) instead, younger folks seem to like stories about witches, dragons...
Perhaps the 2 Biggest problems in modern day is the glorification of victim hood & that someone must be guilty

Emerson was the Eminem of his time. All he did was talk about doing gangsta shit, but he never actually did it. All they did was talk.
@one co-workers? it's funny how people think others find themselves in similar employment situations. You're addressing a young boss who creates others reality's.
@one yes, the same nobles that fancied quartering with young boys. Weak gentlemen who feared strong truths. Good night "noble" one.

I adore his words but not narrated by this person
I agree that people should value their own thoughts and conscience, but to say that you shouldn't agree with or adopt the opinions of others is ignorant. How can a society or an individual progress unless they build upon the thoughts and opinions of past generations (assuming those thoughts and opinions are for the most part true)? I don't believe that people should listen to every thought that they have. What if a murderer believes he is right for wanting to murder? Is his thought correct just because it is his thought? I don't believe so.
What Emerson is saying is that there is an order to life, an order to the universe that we are not privy to. By enacting the words and actions brought forth by our instinct, we stay true to that universal order. The plan that nature intends for us is bigger and grander than any idea of morality or sin that we have as conscious thinkers.
This sort of explanation will sound vague or even like wishful thinking to anyone who has not read extensively on such topics. Not saying there is a right or wrong here but his message makes a lot more sense the more context you have.
Bottom line is you need to do everything you can to go two or three layers deeper if you wish to really understand Self Reliance

Couldn’t listen to 5 mins of this cuz they way u pause between ever period and comma is just so freakin dry. Try to add some emotion rather than using exact same tone pattern for ever sentence.
Your comment is typical of today’s pampered millenials...always needing everything just perfect. You should just go watch girly videos and leave the more intellectual stuff to the grown-ups.
Illogical, no wonder everyone likes it
Lies. U can’t tell me that You understand this or this is an easy read. This should be translated in modern English. And yes I am educated and well versed in English. This book is irritating as hell
