God bless you, been on version 1.01 and was scared to update because of the horror stories, and even gave up trying to even update completely but am so glad I came across your video randomly thanks mate.
Jason you are a marvel! I am one of those technically challenged old guys and Sony's instructions are beyond my brain's capabilties. Thank you so much for making it plain for someone who is used to step by step. Honestly mate I followed you in the early days and am so glad you are still being helpful, bless you! I will still get my son to walk through it with me but it will now be fine.
Bases were well covered, Jason. Ran the 2 stage process w/no issues. The only thing folks might not find intuitive (as I did) is the need to scroll through the camera on-board instruction box before the “Execute” button activates. The “scroll bar” on the right, inside the text box, is very thin. Sony makes you do the complete scroll down, even if you’ve done the process many times before.
LIFE SAVER. Jason, you completely solved my problem and I just wanted to thank you personally. I had a very big shoot today and unfortunately, my new camera was not formatted correctly with the new firmware. I spent an entire day having completely out-of-focus images and panicking throughout. Anyway, I did some research, and I happened upon your video, which really helped me walk through this issue. I have another full-day shoot tomorrow, and it's too important to have this kind of a mess. I really appreciate people like you who just show exactly what the hell needs to happen and solve problems for people. Many thanks!
Great thanks, I'm not quite so nervous about doing it now. Could I ask why we have to format the disk each time please, and why we can't just copy the firmware onto one that has images on it?
You can do that, but Sony recommends to format the card, because the file names for the firmware are the same. So, it can be easy to mistakenly apply the wrong one twice for example...

Hello friend, I hope you are well, do you have a link or how can I get version v1.10, it is no longer available and I have not been able to update my camera
What version is your camera at currently? When updating from Ver.1.01 or earlier, you need to update to Ver.1.05 before proceeding with the Ver.2.00 update. Thanks for the video instruction. My firmware version is 1.0. Can I follow the steps you shown in the video. Camera cannot read the downloaded file in the CF card. Appreciate your advise.
Thank you for the video instruction, always reassuring to see someone do it instead of just following the written instruction. A7IV is amazing BTW, made my Fuji X100V expendable because colors were equally good with little editing.
Yeah, I see what you are saying now after watching it back a few times. As it turns out the private folder just happened to be highlighted. I still dropped it on the root as you can see the outline of blue on the border of the window when I drop it over. At first I missed what you were saying I apologize. It turns out it went to the root as you can see after it copies over, but it does look like it goes into the private folder, I hear ya.

Hi Jason, many thanks for this. Do you know why I'm not able to simply drag and drop the update fail from my downloads to my SD card? (I've checked that the SD card isn't locked).
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it has something to do with permissions if you are using a Mac, Windows I have no idea sorry... If you google "enable permissions for external SD Card" you should be able to find something that will help...
Hi. Great video. Sso, I just tried to update my Sony A7IV. I currently have version 1.10 so I went to update straight to the latest update, is that correct? I've just tried to update to the latest 1.11 software but on the camera when I go to version, the 'Software update' option isn't lit up for me to click on. Any idea why this is? Thanks.
Interesting an no I do not know why... I am also at v1.10 and needed to update, but I heard a new update is coming soon so I figured I would wait. I'll look into it, thanks, Jay
Thanks for your reply. I’ve managed to update it since messaging you. I read somewhere of some other people having similar issues and I was advised to format the memory card on my computer/laptop instead of in camera and this worked a treat. Thanks.
Easy, great demo thanks, v1.01/1.05/1.11 no problems. Poor form from Sony not to provide a new video themselves for the new cameras, not a great sign for customer support :( I backed up my custom A74 settings to PC prior, but was not required, looks like that is all retained post the firmware upgrades, including my metadata copyright info. There was a question in this thread about "do you delete the SD card firmware file after updates complete". Yes, it's no longer required, re-format card or delete the file from your PC card reader.

The only thing that could be the cause that i can think of is that when i download the file on my mac, the file icon did not have the cone icon like in your video was was just blank.
I wonder if the download did not complete? Files size correct? The icon I believe on a mac just shows what program is most likely going to be used to open it, but I could be wrong on that...
Hey! Great tutorial! Thanks to you I was able to update my new Sony A7iv! 😃 I have a question though! Can you playback videos on your mac by hit the space key when you record 4:2:2 10bit?
@@Jason_Hermann unfortunately I can't. I don't know why. I can hear the audio but not the image. When I double click it says incompatible file for Quicktime For 4:2:0 I am able to preview.
I'm not sure why it is not working for you. I have not updated my mac to Ventura yet, because over the years I have learned to wait a while. I'm still running Monterey 12.3.1, so perhaps it is that?

Hey Jason, Im REALLY struggling with my new a7iv... I can't figure out the workflow needed to go from these darn XAVC files to a Mac compatible MOV file! I can't seem to find any answers online and its absolutely discouraging me from getting out and shooting. I am trying to use Premiere Pro to edit, but I can't even preview my work on my computer! I have downloaded Catalyst Browse, but the exporting doesn't really make sense! Any help from anyone would be super appreciated!
I think I royally screwed my update up. I used a new memory card that I deleted few pic from but didn’t format the card. When I click update the camera says there’s no media inserted in slot 1, no update file in the media or the file is damaged. I downloaded update twice. Second time after I went back and formatted card. Tried twice. Have I ruined a new 256gb card or the ability to update or both? Help. The only thing I’m not sure about is I dragged and dropped the update file directly into mroot.
TC, sorry to hear this! Did you format the card in the camera? You don't want to do it on the computer.. If the camera is not seeing the card at all then something went wrong for sure with memory card... You might be able to send card back if you purchased from Amazon... I'm sure you will still be able to update once you get a card that works in the camera.
@@Jason_Hermann Thank you for responding. Since I write this I tried two different cards one fairly new not used much and another older one. I did reformat the cards after the first time not reformatting. I tried several different times, using a computer to download the update then onto my card. Tried about 5 times actually. It showed it was on my card when card in computer but the camera wouldn’t recognize the card. I’ve used one of the cards for years. Deleted everything then reformatted it. The only thing I can think of it I might not be putting the update at the right place on the card. Tried multiple times to do that successfully I thought. Thank you so much for helping me trouble shoot.
@@epicframe_ I haven’t ruined anything but I never could get it to update firmware. I gave up after many tries and never tried again. I tried every thing I could think of and it working work for me. I’ve been able to update firmware on several cameras previously and even a couple times on this one. But not the last or maybe even another since then.
@@Jason_Hermann must have card in a card reader and connect that to pc, it seems. Dont have card reader for my express card, but used an sd card instead, and that worked fine. So - no cable transfer - only through card/pc.
You didn't have to re-format the card! I did this from a MAC also. All you had to do was to drag and drop to an existing card, even with photos or videos on the card and it doesn't require you to delete them through a new format and you get of course to keep your files! It's not like old days where you had to format to a blank sd card.
Still Trying to update latest 24-105f4 firmware… I downloaded a .dat file so I m guessing need to use memory card method to install the firmware instead of connecting cable from camera to laptop. Anybody able to do it?
Hi John, I have not tried updating this lens, but according to Sony it looks like it updates via the older method unfortunately... When i checked the verson it was still at 1.01. Im gona keep it there, thanks for the video but im not taking any more risks.
@@Jason_Hermann was about 800 megabytes
That sounds about right in size... So you downloaded the first update correct? the V1.05 update?
Hey! Great tutorial! Thanks to you I was able to update my new Sony A7iv! 😃
I have a question though! Can you playback videos on your mac by hit the space key when you record 4:2:2 10bit?
Yes I can with my mac, so I assume you will be able to also ;)
@@Jason_Hermann unfortunately I can't. I don't know why. I can hear the audio but not the image. When I double click it says incompatible file for Quicktime For 4:2:0 I am able to preview.
I'm not sure why it is not working for you. I have not updated my mac to Ventura yet, because over the years I have learned to wait a while. I'm still running Monterey 12.3.1, so perhaps it is that?
i have v1.0 what ishoold do help pls
Update to 1.05 then V1.11 which replaced 1.10 like I used in this video...
Thanks
Welcome 👍
im still hestitant to update, what benefits for the upgrade
I did not really cover that in this video, because I wanted to make it as short as possible... Here is what you get: Allows you to select M and S sizes in addition to L when using the RAW recording lossless compression method
The shutter speed and ISO sensitivity settings dedicated for flash photography can be retained
Adds the Touch Shutter function
Improves the accuracy of the Eye AF feature
The camera's serial number can be recorded in the metadata in the movie files
Note: Where the Write Serial Number option was set to On before the update, the Write Serial Number (still image/movie) will be set to Off after the update.
Improves operability of Wi-Fi connections
Adds a 1 minute setting to the Power Save by Monitor menu
Fixes an issue where the viewfinder display may not be brightened according to the ambient brightness
Improves the operational stability of the camera
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks, I just asked this ? before reading this. You don’t have to answer mine. 😊
need help. i updated my sony a7iv and now it shuts down in 15 minutes. would it be possible to downgrade?
Why is it shutting down? Is it overheating?
@@Jason_Hermann overheating
You need to set the Auto Power OFF Temp back to HIGH: MENU → (Setup) → [Power Setting Option] → [Auto Power OFF Temp.] → HIGH
@@Jason_Hermann I already did this
@@TVPALOTINA What mode are you recording in and are you 100% sure it is set to HIGH? 60p will overheat, but unless it's hot where your filming should last longer than that. What is the ambient temp where you are filming?
@tc7486 did you find the solution?
@@epicframe_ I haven’t ruined anything but I never could get it to update firmware. I gave up after many tries and never tried again. I tried every thing I could think of and it working work for me. I’ve been able to update firmware on several cameras previously and even a couple times on this one. But not the last or maybe even another since then.
@tc7486 i tried it from my phone and it did work , u have to try
link downalod 1.10?
Cant copy firmware from pc to cf express card in my camera :(
Weird, I wonder why your PC is not allowing that? Prolly something to do with permissions I would guess?
@@Jason_Hermann must have card in a card reader and connect that to pc, it seems. Dont have card reader for my express card, but used an sd card instead, and that worked fine. So - no cable transfer - only through card/pc.
@@TomatenDK Oh, I had no idea you were trying to use the cable to do that, sorry...
You didn't have to re-format the card! I did this from a MAC also. All you had to do was to drag and drop to an existing card, even with photos or videos on the card and it doesn't require you to delete them through a new format and you get of course to keep your files! It's not like old days where you had to format to a blank sd card.
Thanks for the info!
Safer to format.
As luck would have it I now have a brick…….and I have to bring it in to Sony service….not happy!!!
It's only an update for the A7RV, so I'm assuming you just got that camera and want to update the lens? If you scroll down a bit the instructions are here: www.sony.com/electronics/support/lenses-e-mount-lenses/sel24105g/software/00284661
@@Jason_Hermann Thks.. will give it another shot
In the end i bootcamp my MacBook and updated the lens successfully using windows
👍👍👍👍✌
Didn’t work with proper steps.says there’s no media in slot, no update in media or the file is damaged.
Are you certain the file name did not change?
@@Jason_Hermann its happening the same with me, the name did not change
version 1.11 is already out
Thanks!
Thanks!
Thank you very much and your welcome :)
