I think it really is case of style. They tried to go for a much more crisp and vibrant look than the original which (while limited in technology) went for a more realistic dull look in most places (that sea part with the ship sailing was fucking awful on the remasters part). It really does feel like they decided to be more cartoony with this, im sure the fact that they didn't update the models doesn't help much either
Its actually not a downgrade. They remastered the lighting and a lot of other stuff, but most of the models they have left the same, the new lighting and upgraded textures make those 2012 graphics of the models stand out like a sore thumb.

Do note some engines of a game cannot simply retain the same lighting and shading process when being ported to a new system, sometimes it does work when the devs decide to implement or rework the source code or make a decision that will drastically change things overall. Sometimes it cant be helped

They have improved the mechanics of the gameplay that were not there before, but which now have also brought here, namely being able to whistle even in the bushes, double stealth kills with the blade hidden in low profile, being able to change weapons when you want and not go every time in the shops, improved some secondary objectives, in short they tried to make it look more modern, the only thing they didn't have to do I repeat, is the change of lighting that does not reflect well with the models of the characters, and the textures of all the characters, NPCs that used to really give the effect of fabric, now look like they are made of plastic except Connor's.

they didn't even bother to change the shader to match the updated lighting. that's probably the reason why they focus too much on the environment in the remaster trailer because they know the characters look bad in it.
Yeah, it is a very strange "remaster". The foliage may look better, but the outdoor lighting and shading doesn't match at all. And look at the clouds. Even the water is strange although Ubisoft is very good at simulating water (see other Creed titles and Far Cry).

They made the lighting better but swapped out the face textures which had painted on shadows before. That's why it looks worse, they used current Gen textures on an outdated engine
It's like how fable anniversary looks worse than fable. Although fable's remaster lowered the brightness compared to the original ... obviously this remaster did the opposite lol
It helps if you adjust game brightness to 4 in the Options menu instead of the default 5. It doesn't fix it completely, of course, but trust me, IT DOES HELP! It makes most cutscenes look less weird and makes the game look a little bit like a "remaster". All things considered, I'm actually enjoying replaying it. 👍

R.U.S.E had beautiful graphics back when it was in VIP beta (probs Closed beta) in 2009, Ubisoft fucked it up and downgraded it, probs one of its first victims. edit: in VIP Beta you were able to zoom in to the ground to the point where can you see a whole tank in extreme detail, fires looked WAY BETTER in CB than in the RELEASE VERSION. Just watch some VIP Beta videos of R.U.S.E then compare it with the release version.
It's probably because they assumed that watch dogs will never be playable enough for 90% of computers in our houses. They downgraded cuz hardware requirements was too big for most computers.
They downgraded it because M$ and Sony told them to so people wouldn’t realise how weak PS4 and XBO graphic power is compared to a gaming pc. You could actually change some settings in a confit file and it already looked much better. Not as good as the presentation and trailers but it was a strong improvement (game was still boring as heck though)

The issue is they remasteredthe lighting in the game without remastering the textures to accommodate for the change in lighting. So we have textures/character models that looks weird because of it.

The remaster looks way better except in cutscenes. The actual game itself, the lighting, the textures, the foliage and the environments look way better. They just messed up the faces in cutscenes
The lighting is definitely better, but OH GOD the original models are not adapting well to the modern light effects

R.U.S.E had beautiful graphics back when it was in VIP beta (probs Closed beta) in 2009, Ubisoft fucked it up and downgraded it, probs one of its first victims.
edit: in VIP Beta you were able to zoom in to the ground to the point where can you see a whole tank in extreme detail, fires looked WAY BETTER in CB than in the RELEASE VERSION.
Just watch some VIP Beta videos of R.U.S.E then compare it with the release version.

It's probably because they assumed that watch dogs will never be playable enough for 90% of computers in our houses. They downgraded cuz hardware requirements was too big for most computers.
They downgraded it because M$ and Sony told them to so people wouldn’t realise how weak PS4 and XBO graphic power is compared to a gaming pc. You could actually change some settings in a confit file and it already looked much better. Not as good as the presentation and trailers but it was a strong improvement (game was still boring as heck though)

The issue is they remasteredthe lighting in the game without remastering the textures to accommodate for the change in lighting. So we have textures/character models that looks weird because of it.
