- A Guide to Improving Playback on your Synology NAS Drive nascompares.co...
One of the most popular reasons that many users invest in a compact desktop Synology NAS solution is for use as a private Plex media server. The appeal of Plex as an alternative to paid subscription streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime video is fairly evident, giving you the ability to watch all of your lovely movies and box sets, but still enjoy the slick graphical user interface and background polish (such as trailers, reviews descriptions, thumbnails, watchlists, recommendations and artwork) afforded to those online streaming platforms. The new generation of Synology diskstation NAS' that arrived in summer 2020 (DS920+, DS220+, DS420+ and DS720+) are all solid solutions for use as a Plex media server NAS, however lately many users have identified a recurring playback problem on these recent Intel Celeron powered NAS'. Namely, the fact that they seem to be having difficulty playing H.265 (also known as HEVC) in even rather simple files even as low as 480p and 720p, despite the fact that the CPU and memory are not what being hit very hard. This is a playback issue that is not apparent in the Synology Video Station app (happily playing and converting these files without issue). So, what gives? I am pleased to confirm though that it CAN BE SOLVED! Just follow the guide below, spare 5 minutes to go through the steps and you will be able to play those pesky H.265 / HEVC files, even at 8bit and 10bit.

Your posts on Plex and Synology are great. I am using them to set up my Synology 220+ and Plex. This post was easy to follow. Thank you for being very basic in your explanations, for those of us that need to be "baby stepped". Kudos to you!
Thank you! this fixed the buffering issue on my synology NAS DS920+
I had the same problem on my qnap TS-653d. I followed your guide its pretty similar doing it on qnap it made a massive difference to HD transcoding. When I played one of the old carry on movies I got breakup it's now perfect Cheers great guide
Thank you so much!! This fixed the issue with my DS220+
Does this issue still apply, or has it been fixed in updated Synology DSM 7.0/7.1? Or an updated version of Plex Media Server (currently at 1.26)
I've got a DS220+ on order and wondered if this manual workaround is still needed to be implemented
Did you find an answer?
I have a DS218+, hoping that this fix would work but unfortunately my 10 bit HEVC videos are struggling to playback. Do you think that's because the Celeron J3355 struggles with 10-bit HEVC regardless of the driver?
When in my DS920 + in the / PlexMediaServer / AppData / Plex Media Server folder (this is the only folder I have), after entering the data into the Preferences file and clicking save, the following message appears: "Sorry, this account does not have the appropriate permissions to perform this operation". I am the administrator of my DS920 + and I have enabled full permissions for the application. What to do?
I was able to get around this by downloading the file, editing it in VSCode (or whatever text editor) and then re-uploading through File Station).
That being said, though, as of today on the latest Plex and latest DSM it really made no difference when it comes to transcoding on my 6GB 220+ trying to intentionally convert down X265 10Bit content to Convert Automatically.
First Class as usual, one important question, will any future Plex update have an impact on this change of driver?
I gave up on Plex. Videos would play one day but not the next. I now use Emby, works all the time. I don’t have the time to fool around with buggy software.
Why can't Synology add USB Ethernet support? I bought the DS220+ when it first came out and its great. But the transfer speeds are so slow.
If I'm looking to stream via Plex two streams on the home network with one transcoded stream over the internet outside my network, should I buy a Synology 220 plus or the 720 plus. I only need to watch 1080p Blu-ray videos and lower not 4K. Thank you
My line has two more sections after this to the right. One is transponder H 264 background preset and the other is cloud sync needs updated. When I placed the copy where you say I get an error when trying to save
Would you please illustrate how to implement this driver on a QNAP NAS?
Great video! As always.
Btw you accidently put “HEVC 256” and not “HEVC 265” in the titel.
Would you also perform this fix on the 920+ or is it only for 220+?
this fix is really for DS920+ (on reddit other user showed this fix), but he tried it on DS220+ and seem work properly
Great Video Robbie!
So this fix will not work on a DS918+?
I would like to know this as well
I'm looking to get the DS220+ and would like to know if Video Station can easily play and transcode 4K HEVC video, if Plex struggles..
Thanks for this vid. Is this limitation only the case when trying to playback HEVC media when not on the local network? I'm not interested in playing back content while I'm outside my home, but I want to be able to stream 10bit HEVC 4K to a nVidia Shield TV. My understanding is that since the Shield TV can play HEVC, this transcoding of HEVC shouldn't be an issue. Is that correct?
Would these steps be same on different symbology model like 918+?
I can’t locate the part where the portion should be pasted.
Thank you
I did the following steps and the system responded with: the user account has not been assigned proper privileges to perform this action ... any steps to fix this?
I have previously done this successfully but i upgraded my nas and this time i have the same issue cant work it out
This still relevant in 2023 or has been patched ?
For some reason when i try to open the file it says this user does not have permission but i checked the user account and it does its the admin account any ideas?
I was able to get around this by downloading the file, editing it in VSCode (or whatever text editor) and then re-uploading through File Station).
That being said, though, as of today on the latest Plex and latest DSM it really made no difference when it comes to transcoding on my 6GB 220+ trying to intentionally convert down X265 10Bit content to Convert Automatically.
i got a samsung tv 55qe95T and i can read all videos by direct streaming them, but what kind of utilisation can be improved with your modification ?? only when transcoding 4K to a smaller resolution on 1080p tv or smartphone etc ? Thx for your answer
Hi, I have the exactly same TV, do I need a app or how it work on Samsung?
Has Plex corrected the driver yet?
I tried this on the 3/15/2023 version of plex and the server could not be loaded by the browser. Restoring the original file and the browser loaded plex OK.
How do you do this on a pc server?
I have a DS220+ and DSM7 installed but I can't apply this fix because I don't see all the foler to access to the performences.xml file when I look by using file station in the plex folder it is empty. Ho can I do to fix this issue ? @ Today when I start a movie in H265/HEVC it won't work. Help please.
Did you work this out? I don't have any folders in the Plex folder either!
@@Hekyeh Hello, no I didn't solve this issue.
What consumer NAS would you advise to stream 4K h265 then?
If you are direct streaming, you really don't need to worry. The J4125 will do it perfectly.
@@GregoryCunningham but..... the j4125 is not in this device. It’s the 2 core little brother
@@oldgamersunite2486 Thanks for the correction, but the dual core variant is also perfectly suited for direct streaming.
Can you do this on QNAP? (TS-452A)
I did that on the TS-453D and it worked well.
Same here done it on qnap TS 653D made massive difference
Nas is far too loud to be a plex server by hdmi into your tv.
