How To Make a Canister Filter For Aquarium

- Опубліковано 25 лют 2021
- Do you have a small tank and can't find an adequate size filter to clean the water? Why not build your own filter. I have built a 1.7 liter canister filter that runs with a 200L/H aquarium pump attached to the inside of the canister filter. My home made canister filter is made of a glass storage container and after watching today's upload you will know how to make a canister filter for aquarium. Before starting this project, test your container for any water leakage. A canister won't work if pressure can't be build inside the container.
After buying a glass container from Ikea, I bough vinyl tubing, water pump, joiner and other supplies from Bunnings warehouse. Two holes are drilled in the container lid for filter inlet/outlet connection. I drilled another hole for the wire of water pump. Everything is sealed with aquarium safe silicone.
Two types of mechanical filter media is used in this DIY canister filter, a coarse foam and a medium foam. Biological filtration consists of ceramic rings which is highly porous media to colonize beneficial bacteria and maintain clean water in the aquarium.
In response to comments on my other videos, I have held the canister filter side ways and upside down to show that if you chose the right container then there shouldn't be any leaks and water level shouldn't drop inside the canister.
If you enjoy this video, then please give it a big like. Sharing this video on social media will increase the reach and would be highly appreciated. Thank you for reading this description and watching video. If you have any questions then please post in the comment section below and I would do the best I can to reply on time.

Amazing. Your canister filters keep getting better and better mate
Thanks MB, really appreciate it mate
Nice work on this diy canister filter. Looks amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
That's dope, pretty good idea using clear container so you can see exactly what's going on and when it needs cleaning, I don't know why all canister filters are not transparent as they are normally out of view anyway.
Thanks Heap, I usually clean filter foam in my canister filter for 4 feet tank once a month but won't know how dirty it is till I open the canister.
I've actually found young fish in my canisters before now when I've opened them up.
During my last cleanup I would have put 10 to 15 baby shrimps back in the tank from the canister. I guess they would be safe in the filter than in the tank though.
Clear containers promote Algae growth soooo yea
Wow so cool great work mate! Never have to buy a canister filter again :)
Thanks Genie, appreciate it mate. Have a good weekend
Nice and interesting video,i really enjoyed it
Thanks mate, appreciate it

Happy Friday my friend
Stay safe

Happy Friday to you too friend, thank you for watching
Whats the motor item you used and is therr a link for it? Im thinking of making my own as stuff is too expensive.
What brand and model is the water pump? I'd love to find something that has a quick disconnect for the power cable like yours does but can't find anything.
Will it work with straight perpendicular pipe which dont not bemd
Sir apne jo jo chis istemal kiya hai project me jai se nipil ka nam size ea sab batai ea hamko....
Ese filtro esta bien para un acuario de 1metro 3 de largo x 28 de cm de ancho x 35 cm de altura
Ese canister esta bien para un acuario de de 100 litros
👍👍👍👍👍💥
Thanks mate
What's the terminology for that electric socket you have attached to the lid to pass the wire
Hi mate, apologies for late reply. Aim was to make the connection air tight. As turning the knob squeezes the foam around the wire. I ended up putting some silicone around the socket to be on the safe side
Hey mate, where did you buy your pump from? I had an over the back filter that fell apart and caught on fire while I wasn't home. (Lucky it didn't do more damage). So want to move to canister filters
Hi Thor, pump for the filter was purchased from Bunnings warehouse. You can find quite a few mini pumps for around $20.
Yeah, I know short and sweet is generally good. But some commentary/narrative would of been helpful! What do you do if the cord of your pump doesn't come apart with the connection used in the video? Make a hole big enough for the entire plug to pass through? How would you seal that?
Cut it. It's two wires to resolder\connect and water proof with shrink tubing.
Silicone it all the same.
Will it work if i use lily pipe for the water inlet and outlet?
It should work fine as pump i have used is only 200LPH
if you want it done right make it yourself mate!
Cheers mate, have a nice weekend
i have a small project, im doing now, but where did you buy the pump? I don't want to cut the cord, for my build
Hi Chris, i bought this pump from Bunnings warehouse.
@@Fishaholic amazing! Thank you so much for the information and speedy reply! Much appreciated! 👊 😎
Do you have a video on your 15 gallon globes??
Hey mate, I have pasted links to both of the fish bowl setups. Aquascaping is different in both.

@@Fishaholic Thank you!!! I'll be binge watching today🦈🦈🦈
@@coastalcouple Appreciate it Mandy, hope you will like the videos.
What about inlet, will it automatically suks water in?
Hi Kishore, fill the filter with water prior to turning on the pump. It will automatically take the water through inlet and keep pumping it out through outlet. As long as container is air tight.
Wow, does it need to be an airtight container??
Hi Simone, it will leak or won't pump water if the container is not air tight
Yes
Hey mate can I use m seal clay instead of silicone
Not too sure as I have never used it but if feel like it would work then why not give it a go.
@@Fishaholic sure
My water intake tube has no suction. Any pointers?
If you have prefilled the container with water and the pump is fully submerged and there is no suction, then position the filter lowered then the aquarium and give it a go again. If it still doesn't work, then the container is not air-tight.
Where does one find a 15 gallon bowl?
I could find it at a variety store I Hoppers Crossing, Victoria
do i need an air pump too or the filter is enough ??
U need air pump
Bro I use my coco pouder box for a filter
Any air tight container would do a good job for diy filters, thank you for sharing your experience
What kind of pump was that?
Aqua one pump, don't remember the model
this will work with small powerheads or cooler pumps provided the intake fits the pipe
Hi..Nice video..
But won't it be a problem if you have small fish in the aquarium? I mean they might be sucked to the canister yeah?
You could always use a strainer at the end of inlet so small fish stays protected.
@@Fishaholic yeah that would be an good idea. Have to think of a way to put it nicely though. Thanks mate
I know this is random🤣 but what kind of plant the outside?
Hi John, its a bonsai in the ceramic pot next to the fish bowl.
What kind of bonsai? Do you have a video on that?
Its a Juniper bonsai, a Christmas gift i got last year. Thank you
Product links?
Where do we get this pump ? What's the name
Its aquapro 200LPH pump which i purchased from Bunnings warehouse
You can also purchase it from Amazon shopping app.
@@jangranitin28 thanks
I’ve spent over $150 on materials and countless tries trying to build a canister filter and every time my lid has leaked. I’ve upgraded containers 4 times I’m about to give up. How to I make sure it’s sealed good enough I’ve went to every store in my area and I really don’t wanna use a 5 gallon bucket or a thermos
Usa elastil o melhor
fishtank safe silicone the crap out of it
@@MC4l247 the one I made before was leaking at the lid seal not the holes for the tubing and wire. And I wanted to be able to clean it without resealing
@@codyshubin1073 there are special tapes for that so that it'll take extra place and not leak
I made it out of pvc pipe lol , sucessfully
Please mention list of products required in details... Not everyone know the name
Hi Gautam, I won't remember exactly what I have used in this diy. Description of the video might be helpful
Ok. I mean name of the accessories used. Like I have to sbow thr images to shopkeeper because I don't know the name of the product.
Hey Bud ! , Does it work for 16 gallon turtle tank ?
It would be okay for a 16 gallon since pump flow rate is 200LPH.
@@Fishaholic ok thx... will it successfully filter my turtle tank ? Turtles produce a lot of waste
It should but you will have to keep cleaning the filter. Internal filter like SOBO would do a good job.
@@Fishaholic so I Should use sobo filter instead of urs ?
Hi Shourya, if you like diy then go with your own design or copy mine. Otherwise there are quite a few powerhead filters available in the market
Is it work for 5-6 small aquariums?
It should work for aquarium up to 40 liters. Higher flow rate would be needed for anything bigger than 40 litres. Appreciate your time Riswan
Nice!! Thx for your answer mate. I'll try it for my betta rack
@@XrngrX wish you best of luck, let me know how you go.
what's the size of pipe & connectors?
Its a 12mm hose both for inlet and outlet
what size pipe does it use?
10mm to 12mm will work well, since it is a small canister filter.
My fish were seized to the canister hole, and he died instantly
Sorry to hear that mate. I have had quite a few shrimps in my bigger canister filter, few of them could be rescued and some of them died too.
Can I use glue gun instead of silicone
Shouldn't be any issue as long as it is aquarium safe and stick well to plastic.
I wouldn't recommend glue gun with water purposes. The glue easily loses its stickiness when it stays under water just after a day or two, just use 100% silicone
How does it pull water from the tank to canister?
Hey mate, it works exactly like a store bought canister filter. Please ensure container is air tight and fill it with water prior to turning it on.
@@Fishaholic I wanted to put the canister at the bottom of the tank. Would there be a problem when power goes off and restarts?
Hey mate, there won't be any issue. Canister will stop working if there is no power. Ensure your container is airtight or it won't work and also pump should be able to lift water up to the required height.
@@Fishaholic if there is no power, the inlet water to canister will keep coming right? Is that why you suggest air right container so that water will stop filling untill power is on?
Hi mate, that's one of the reason canister needs to be air tight. It won't function properly and will leak if its not air tight.
Sponge filter > canister filter
Appreciate your feedback
