Let's be honest, the fanbase dogged on Mai just as badly as the writers did. After all, no one forgets to mention that _Joey_ actually beat Marik, but Mai almost never gets mentioned in that same discussion.

    • @mariowarion
      @mariowarion 4 місяці тому +23

People also forgot that odion would have beaten jounochi.
In yami malik's case I would argue that he did not take mai serious at any point. He took jounochi serious once he was still standing after ra's attack which was when yami malik had no influence anymore. Even if any of those characters would have won, it would not have been a big win. Yami malik has this issue that he loved torturing his opponents to much and that he suffers from hubris. We saw him going all out vs yami yugi and he was outplaying him consistently. Yami malik in the final duel was the only time where he was at full power.

@@mariowarionWhat a silly excuse, might as well claim that Mai never took Joey serious enough and that's the only reason why he could win 😂, the only reason why Marik not literally got wrecked by his own god-card against Mai was that he just pulled some ancient egyptian plot armour out of his butt.

@@mariowarion Yeah, he was a good antagonist, and a good duelist in the one dual that we saw him go all out. His weakness was that he only tried when he felt like he had to, and it cost him once in the case of his order to Odion to play the fake Ra, and it should have cost him twice because of his duels with Joey and Mai.

Most of these do sound pretty bad, but you could justify the Duelist Kingdom example as her trying to give Yugi some tough love, which does eventually work, and isn't totally left field for her. And she ultimately throws the game out of that desire to help him, and also not sicourage Tea.

Mai gave him tough love, she doesn’t have the personality to be gentle…And while she maybe didn’t know the WHOLE situation, she was basically mocking him to make him understand how stupid it really sounded out loud: How he needs to grow up, stop over exaggerating one loss, what a crybaby, etc. she was hoping he’d hear her and think to himself “wow maybe it really is dumb of me to be thinking like that “😭

Right now in season 3 Yuamu is kidnapped and may turn out to be the main villain of the arc if the writers have guts, but we don't know yet. The third season is about the two male leads going into space with pretty much a new main female lead to search for her.

Honestly I say that Mai's arc could have been really great if her giving Yugi the Star Chips more closely followed the manga's version of the events, and that her end in the Doma filler arc was a bit more conclusive. She definitely should have come back and properly apologized for everything that she did instead of being delegated to a blink and you miss it background character. I actually really like her negative character arc in the Doma arc to show that her torture and defeat at the hands of Yami Marik had serious, long-lasting effects on her, but she definitely shouldn't have been offscreened.

She beats Marik in their duel but Marik sends her to the Shadow Realm anyways when he goes to kill Odion. He then takes Mai to his rare hunter base where Yugi, Kaiba and Joey battle through to Marik, Joey plucks up courage and takes him down.
The Battle City finals resume, with the finals being between Yugi and Joey.
Then in Waking the Dragons, Bandit Keith takes Mai's role getting revenge on Pegasus and then later Joey who is with Mai at the time, in a fit of rage Mai decimates Keith only to lose her soul to Raphael.
Series 5 would mostly just play the same as normal, Mai's had enough of duelling for now so maybe an interesting conflict with Joey about PTSD and burnout too.

I largely disagree with two of the three points here.
    1) Duellist Kingdom is more of an issue of dub vs sub. In the sub, her intentions are much clearer than in the dub. She doesn't say it directly like she does in the manga, but she does say quietly to herself or in her thoughts that her intention is to remind Yugi of his purpose here and of the game he enjoys by coaxing Tea/Anzu into a duel so their passion can break through Yugis shock. It's designed to show that Mai, while somewhat harsh on the surface, is a genuinely good person with a lot of empathy and cunning.
    2) In the anime continuity, she wasn't taking Ra for flair, it was her actual strategy to take it from him from the start, but equally some have argued that Holding Arms effect was described as "invincible" for three turns, meaning she couldn't do damage without either waiting it out or destroying it, so summon Ra would have enough removed Holding Arms from the board or cemented her board state until she had an answer. Even if it wasn't the best move and she could have won with the sisters, she was basically in a position where, if plot armour didn't happen, she was guaranteed to win, so did it with style.
I do agree, however, that it would have been nice to see a more full end for her character. At the same time, I kind of feel like it was right for it to end that way, where she goes on her own again but this time feeling more secure in her relationships with the others and ready to process her trauma more healthily. Her final words were optimistic if apologetic, and felt in line with her "lone wolf" character for her to come back to her friends when she felt it was time to do so.
I personally love Mai in the show due to her arc and desire to be self-sufficient, yet subtle in her ways of showing care for her friends that others barely pick up on.

  • @lpfan4491
    @lpfan4491 4 місяці тому +4

Mai's fate sucks. She really had nothing major to show beyond some decent moments in Duelist Kingdom and essencially being the girl in distress in Battle City and was then thrown out of the story, without addressing her mental state after all that shenanagans. The anime actually does. And gives her a lot of well-crafted attention actually. And then sets up a redemption arc to fix her having lost her way, this rocks.
Then she got assassinated hard next episode for some reason, this doesn't rock. And thrown out of the story again because "Kaiba Corp couldn't find her" for Grand Prix? Wat? But why tho? (Yes, she literally shows up for the crowd later. Makes it even more dumb.)
Yeah, there is er...a reason why I want a remake of the anime that is handled competently? Like, I also want an actual adaptation of the Manga too, of course, but there are a lot of things unique to the anime that are great ideas but handled really poorly that deserve their own careful treatment. Especially considering it's not like the anime is a throwaway production that can be scrubbed from history and nothing is lost. It has its own sequels, spinoffs, videogames, etc. It is for all intends and purposes its own thing.
3:36 I don't think the card would actually work afterwards, they kinda destroyed its powersource. I feel as though it would make more sense to have her discard it to handtrap-negate one of dartz's vital cards to cap off that redemption arc. Yes, I took that effect from the weird Upperdeck Employee version, it feels appropriate enough considering one of the plotpoints in the arc is that the Orichalcos is capable of destroying itself, why shouldn't it have an omni-negate destruct?

The YGO anime and the manga are 2 different continuitys. So Waking the Dragons technically is not a filler arc within the anime continuity. It's even called back to later, and fills in the plot holes left by a lack of season 0 being localized.
So nobody can use the "its filler" argument to defend Mai.
Also she kills Jonochi cuz she had a skill issue in a card game and got so jealous over being in someone elses shadow that even Kaiba would shake his head from secondhand embarrassment.

Mai was a sign of things to come.
The treatment of Aoi Zaizen in VRAINS is the culmination of all those signs.
If you wanna keep on this route on the fenale Duelists, please talk about how VRAINS not just destroyed Aoi as a Duelist and character, but also how every single one of her loses ended in some form of physical humiliation.
Also, apparently a major factor in this overall issue was the original director (who was replaced after VRAINS when they changed studios) was incredibly sexist. Like the director is almost infamous for how poorly he writes and handles female in every project he is involved in.

Which is why he actually didn't significantly touch Mai in DM, even when episodes in Season 4 focussed on her(those episodes were written by someone else, iirc a woman)...and it still ended up poorly in the second half. Heck, bro was not even part of the ArcV anime at all and that turned out worse than anything else pre-Vrains.
Studio Gallop was just cursed and could not keep a female character in the green if their life depended on it.

I disagree with at least some of this analysis. I actually loved her 4kids battle with Tea, it showed Mai had her own unique and valid way of motivating Yugi. She has a hard time showing care outright, but she really desperately wanted to help. She motivated him like a bratty big sister, which fit her character at the time, who previously was a solo cholo. This was a more gradual character arc sure, but one I thought was actually sweet, and really was one of the moments that endeared me to her character. And a character being the victim of Hubris isn't a character assassination, it's actually having a plot. She had gotten far with the heart of the cards, but it showed that in the heat of the moment, the spotlight can get the better of anyone. She has a hard time separating her identity as that person and the woman she's becoming because of the scooby gang. And this finally erupts in the orichalcos arc, where in the absence of the gang, completely loses her identity. She wants to be that "heart of the cards, best friends forever" kind of girl, but her friends, like many friend groups, have sort of gone their separate ways. And while maybe they were ready for it, she wasn't, and that was a very isolating feeling, and the next group of people she falls in with are pretty much the worst. We can see the promise of the orichalcos as a metaphor for drugs and other wreckless behaviors. And even though her friends get her through that time, she still has a lot of shame to deal with. My only beef is not revisiting her in either the last season of DM or in the movie, because there a redemption arc was so well deserved.

The biggest thing that ruined Mai is that her Harpie Lady deck just stayed perpetually weak. Throughout all of her duels, she never had any new boss monster(s). I love my Harpie Lady build, but the "First Waifu Deck" is nothing more than a punching bag deck.

The only woman treated worse by the franchise was Mai’s original va. She brought an irreplaceable personality to the character and I was always confused why she never voiced Mai in any yugioh project since. A part of the reason I love rangiku some much is because it literally feels like they plucked out her character and put her in the Bleach universe

      Aoi had the hardest matchups.

@@apollojustice5589 you act like sevens duelists are as skilled as vrains ones. Many people consider vrains duels to be boring because of all anime they are the closest to the meta. The meta played by real life players who are much superior to the anime duelists. You completely dismiss that competition matters. The characters of shows vary compared to other shows duelists in terms of strength. Or are DM duelists as good as Zexal ones? Are GX duelists as good as arc v ones? Can judai now beat reiji?
Your win record argument is very bad.
shark has a worse win record than kaito. Kaito barely got past mizael. It was a very close duel on the moon with kaito even getting a new number by a exterior force which ended up making the difference. Nasch's level meanwhile was very close to zexal III in his final duel vs yuma. Let's rank the barian emperors. 1. nasch. 2. vector. Had the power of 5 barians + don thousands powers. 3. mizael. Kaito would have lost in season 1 if yuma used zexal. Kaito won with 200 life points after all. Kaito is nowhere near nasch or yuma if he uses zexal III. Both duelists have worse win records than kaito, yet they left him in the dust in season 2.
Yusei has a amazing win record. Z-one is still the strongest duelist in 5D's. You now say that yusei defeated z-one. What did yusei have help wise? Aporia gave him data on z-one's deck. Aporia made it possible for yusei to duel z-one in a riding duel format which yusei is at his strongest. Riding duels give yusei a lot of drawing power. Shooting star dragon can only be summoned in a riding duel with yusei heavily relying on it after he obtained it. Antinomy gave him a hint that there is something beyond accel synchro. Yusei knowing that z-one is basically himself, made it possible for him to predict z-one's attack patterns. Z-one could do that as well but only to a certain point because of yusei's development coming into fruition in this duel. Yusei's friends gave him a total of 6 extra deck monsters while also lending him their signer powers. The crimson dragon helped him, a god with omnipotence and omnipresence. Despite all of that yusei was about to give up with his father literally punching sense into him. So 8 people and a god who makes the egypt god trio look like fodder. Put that help away and z-one would have destroyed yusei. But I guess anzu and rin having a better win record than z-one makes them superior to him according to your logic. Reira is now stronger than reiji I guess. She never lost after all. Reiji meanwhile lost to zarc and yuya.
Playmaker has a perfect win record onscreen. He was powerless vs peak bohman. Ai had to sacrifice his original self, Ghost girl had to, akira had to and the remaining three members of hanoi as well. All to just destroy bohman's neuron network which was so op that playmaker himself said that he is powerless against bohman as long as he had it. So 6 outsiders had to lay down their life/consciousnesses for playmaker to win. Bohman already tied with playmaker before his upgrade and on top of that absorbing 5 ignises.
Yami bakura has a really bad winning record. He won like one duel against fodder. Is jounochi now stronger than yami bakura? Yami bakura overwhelmed kaiba and nearly defeated yugi muto in the final arc.
You tell me romin can beat ghost girl in a master duel? Luke is a S tier duelist in sevens and he said himself that he does not peform well in master duels. But yes romin does. You also act like rush duels are as complex as master duels. It's not like yugioh's master duel format is among the hardest cardgames to get into. Who did ghost girl face? Playmaker, revolver, blood sheppard (lightning said his team would probably lose if he would join team playmaker) and ropoppi (would have beaten soulburner if it wasn't for a malfunction). Like Aoi she faced strong competition. Again. Competition matters. Izayoi gets praised to hell for beating fodder in season 1 and misty in season 2. those duelists are fodder compared to the duelists aoi and ghost girl faced. Or do you want to tell me that misty has a shot at beating Revolver and playmaker? In which universe?
Win record barely matters in terms of ranking the strongest duelists. If I rank the 5D's duelists yusei will not be in the top 3 because there is no way he beats z-one, paradox and aporia in a 1v1. Paradox completely destroyed yusei in a riding duel despite using no of his cards we later see (yusei did not recognize them) and he needed two other protagonsists to win. Aporia nearly won a 1v3 vs jack, rua and ruka. Jack was already close to yusei's level. Rua also evolved into a signer in this duel. Heck I even rank jack above yusei given how he dominated yuseininnthe final duel with yusei heavuly relying on luck. Jack's training clearly came into fruition. You could even consider ranking godwin higher than yusei because yusei's growth does not make up for two duelists on jack's and crow's level. That's like saying that yami yugi can beat dartz if he had the gods. Like that could compensate for kaiba. Crow has a great win record. He is 10th at best
Ghost girl destroys everyone in sevens. It's not even close. Heck, even gx duelists are stronger than sevens duelists. We talk about a show where even pegasus is very strong. It's not like mai defeated him so hard that the duel did not satisfy her. Major dm duelists are literally god tier in GX.

Like vrains duelists are obviously better than DM ones. You dismiss that the master duel format is different from rush duels. The master duel format is more complex. Luke is a S tier duelist in sevens and he himself said that he does not perform well in master duels.
Ghost girl faced playmaker, revolver, blood sheppard and ropoppi. Ropoppi could have beaten soulburner if it wasn't for malfunction. Are yuga and luke as strong as playmaker, ropoppi and revolver? Ghost girl faced strong competition, much stronger one than romin. Put ghost girl in sevens and she destroys everyone.
To give you a exampe, why win record barely matters. Kaito has a great win record in zexal. Shark has a worse one. Same for yuma. Who is stronger? Nasch who was close to zexal III level or kaito who barely got past mizael? Who is stronger? Zexal III yuma or kaito? Kaito barely won vs yuma in season 1 with 200 life points. Yuma would have won with zexal I.
Another example. Yusei needed aporia's, antinomy's, his father's, 5 other signers and the crimson dragons power to beat z-one. Would he have won without all this help? No. Yusei has the better win record. Are anzu and rin now stronger than z-one because they have a better win record?

This arc treated him like the character development he had up to the end of Battle City didn't happen. What's worse is that he played the Seal of Orichalcos when there was nothing at stake other than losing.
At least with Duelist Kingdom, Yugi's Grandpa's soul was at stake which is why there is _some_ justification for throwing Kaiba under the bus, but with this arc, he played it just because he didn't want to lose and put one of their souls at risk for no good reason.

I think orichalcos was necessary for his character notice most of the time when yugi/atem lost yugi was the one in control with Rebecca yugi was the one dueling when Joey was under mind control of marik it was yugi heck yugi had to pretty much stop atem from landing the attack in duelist kingdom because it would have killed Kaiba point is atem seems like he hates losing and waking the dragons was pretty much atem learning to take a lost

As I said, Atem ALREADY went through his character arc when Yugi wouldn't let him play back in Duelist Kingdom. The Orichalcos arc ignored that and it ALSO ignored the significance of the Millennium items.
The 7 Items were powerful Mystical artifacts that could only be countered by each other. Dartz's gang literally insulted the Millennium Puzzle and then followed that up by saying that their little pebble (the Orichacos stone) was more powerful than an item. So you're telling me that a small pebble is more powerful than Artifacts crafted from magecraft? That's the writers of the arc just disrespecting the writing that existed up to that point.
What the arc COULD have done was explain that the Orichalcos and its stones had to be countered by a SPECIFIC magic that was wielded by Atlantis just as the Millennium items had to be countered by other items. The stones aren't more powerful than the items, but it's just that Egyptian magic isn't compatible with Atlantean magic and therefore aren't viable counters to the Orichalcos stones. They could have done that, but didn't and even added insult to injury by making the Items a laughing stock during the arc.
The arc has a good concept, but poor execution. If they wanted Atem to become corrupted by the Seal of Orichalcos, there should have been actual stakes such as holding someone hostage and guaranteeing their safety ONLY if Atem played it. Instead, there were NO stakes and he put one of their souls at risk for NO GOOD reason.
You can like the arc if you want, but don't pretend that it doesn't have its flaws and it could have done better.

I disagree with your take on the anime version at duelest kingdom. That was her trying to snap Yugi out of it. Don't forget, she let Tai win.

I think in the anime she actually would've beat Atem in Duelist Kingdom

They could've shortened Battle City HUGELY, which would've helped the story.

Regardless of the flaws in the writing Mai valentine is iconic and a cool character. Only problem is not being as kind to yugi in giving her star chips and losing to tea should have just let her win. The filler was really like bad for her character but her design was cool and she was using evil magic

I hate how when people make Mai decks, it is always a combo of Harpie Lady and Amazoness

I really hate how badly she was written. I thunk it could have been such a neat twist in season 4 if it turns out that the 3rd dragon was Mai and not Joey as everyone expected and she has an active role in beating Dartz.

Bit off topic, but when I first saw Mai's design, I thought she was just yugi disguised as a girl.

Your far too harsh, I never read the manga so I’ve only watched the tv series yet I still thought mai was awesome, do I think she involved enough? No, but in terms of what they did with her on screen while she was there I don’t have any complaints.
