Richard Engle Completely disagree. The Runaways were a much harder edged band. Just listen to Joan Jett and Lita Ford with their guitar work. Not even remotely close to the Go Gos. The Go Gos were much more poppier sounding. The other big difference is that the Runaways started as a rock band and wanted to move in a punk direction (at least Joan Jett did). That’s actually what broke the band up. Sandy & Lita wanted to keep playing hard rock while Joan wanted to move towards punk music. The Go Gos on the other hand, started as a punk band and moved towards more lighter, melodic pop music. Both are different sounding bands, but they both kicked ass.
@@UA-cam.Algorithmic.Nonsense those two AFTER the runaways yeah...but not with the runaways. they had a bit more edge but lita and joan didn't get that hard edge till they split and went their own ways.
Gogos were punk for about a minute and then abaonded that sound for pop. Nothing wrong with it...made a boat load of money that punk wouldn't have given them
@@devilfan2k Yes, WITH the Runaways. Have you even listened to any Runaways albums? Not even close to the Go Gos. I could rattle off 10-15 Runaways songs that are far harder than anything the Go Gos did. If you don't believe me just listen to their first album and compare it to the Go Gos. One is a rock & roll band. The other is a pop band.

Back in '81, LA was a hotbed of punk and new wave. Best shows were at the local high schools. My band had songs on KROQ, and KLOS, but preferred playing at Palos Verdes, Crespi, Westlake and other schools. We even got to play at Belienda's alma mater, Newbury Park High. Unlike the Hollywood clubs - the bands got paid real well - and we were able to put on a full 3-hour show.
Anybody else notice the alternate/extra verse in the song that didn’t make it in the recorded version?? 00:47 Careless talk Through paper walls We can't stop them Only laugh at them Spreading rumors So far from true Dragged up from the underworld Just like some precious pearl
There was so much mystery about this missing verse as it was listed on the inner sleeve of the album, but not recorded. In reality I'm guessing '60s writer/producer Richard Gotherrer cut it to make a tighter pop single, which apparently worked well. He would know: the first #1 he wrote was "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels.
On this day in 1982 {Jan. 23rd} the Go-Go's performed "Our Lips Are Sealed" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand' Five months earlier on Aug. 29th, 1981 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it peaked at #20 & spent over a half-year on the Top 100 {30 weeks} It reached #2 on the Australian ARIA Singles chart, #4 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart, and #47 in the U.K. Was their debut record; between 1981 to 1984 they had six Top 100 entries with two Top 10s RIP Mr. Clark {1929-2012}
The Go-Go's may not have been the most consistent band, but they were still a damn good one. Whatever anyone has to say about their sloppinness, I don't need to hear. This shit is beautiful! And so is this song. ...and if you've got a problem with the pop...... sorry.
This was when "The 80s" began. All female power pop band with catchy danceable songs. Written by Jane (guitar player with red headband) and the lead singer of The Specials, in May or June of 1980 when Go-Go's toured UK opening for The Specials. It is about the short time they dated during that tour.
Madonna looks so young in this! I didn't know she was with this band before she went solo!!! She looks great here!!! My grandma says she used to dress like Madonna in high school!!!
@@suburban60sKidI know that, but they didn't get popular until Madonna joined the group and they did videos like this one - she was really beautiful early on compared to how she looks today
No one wanted to sign them because of the all-female thing, even tho they had a complete album ready to go. So until 1982 when they finally got signed, they played gigs like this.
The Go-Go's signed to I.R.S. Records in April 1981, this performance was booked just before they exploded in popularity. And yes Palos Verdes is an affluent area
@van wray That's just it - the Jam were never popular over here. But Perkins Palace (the old Raymond Theater) was a great venue and many well-known musical acts played there. By the way, the Jam played three nights in a row at Perkins.
Hugh Mongus ... This is that one time when Jeff Spicoli saved Brooke Shields from drowing. He blew some of the reward money hiring The Go-Go’s to play his Birthday party.

I have to laugh when I see post on here about the girls looks. I'm talking about those who bitch about how they look these days. You gotta remember that this was back in the 80s some 30 years ago. Lets see how YOU look some 30 years from now. Its called ageing. It catches up to ALL of us. Including dare I say it, the Go-Go's to. Like I said, father time catches up to ALL of us. Lets see how good those doing the complaining looks like in 30 years. Just saying.
You know who hasn't aged well? Charlotte! She just looks ragged the last couple times I saw them a couple years back and more recently in the bootleg concert video's....too bad cause she was cute up there with Belinda
