  • Mk1 Skoda Octavia vRS - Hot Hatch Bargain! [Cheap Thrills Ep. 2] (feat. Dreams2Drive)
Hello guys, welcome back to Car Obsession, and welcome to another episode of Cheap Thrills, the series in which I sniff out fun that cars that don't cost the earth. More specifically, they need to be £5,000 or under, and need to be able to paint a smile on your face.
Episode 2 brings sensible performance from the Czech Republic, courtesy of the Skoda Octavia vRS. The model used for this video is the Mk1, although a Mk2 is also available for under £5,000. The Mk1 uses a 1.8 litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine which produces 180hp and 235Nm of torque, meaning 0-62mph comes in 7.9 seconds, and the top speed is 144mph.
Thanks to its reserved looks and turn of speed, not only was it the fastest production car Skoda had made, but it was also one of the weapons of choice the UK's police force. Nowadays you can pick them up for almost silly money, but should you? I got behind the wheel to find out, thanks to fellow UA-camr and Mk1 Octy owner, Chris from Dreams2Drive - check out his channel here: / @dreams2drive450

Good evening guys, and welcome to episode 2 of 'Cheap Thrills', the series in which I prove you don't need to break the bank to have fun. This time I feature a Mk1 Octavia vRS, which may just be of the biggest hot hatch bargains out there.

Had mine 6 years now, paid £1600 for it back then. Plenty of poke, cheap maintenance. I like the old school look of them. Whats not to like

I had a vRS for around 2 and half years, only just sold it for £1000 to fund an E39 530i. Always wanted to own one since seeing them back in the mid 2000s in the WRC. Bargain for the new owner, fitted 3 MTB in the back with the seats down whilst shocking a few Fiesta ST and MX5 drivers on the B roads. Get one whilst they are cheap, you wont be disappointed.

I've always liked the look of them & would like to take one out for a spin. I have a 2003 mk4 golf 1.8t 180bhp 6 speed. I fitted a set of leather Recaros to it the other day & it's made such a difference to the driving experience.

Yeah quite roomy cars almost as roomy as Mondeos I was driving over a decade but suspension, refinement and supportive seats are much better in the Mondeo.

I've always loved this gen and the mk3. You get decent performance and plenty of practicality. That mpg on a run is surprising I've watched few of these guys videos before

There was a great crying out, and they did say "Dual Mass Flywheel" 😂😂😂

Yeah, which turned out to be pointless as Chris had already said what a DMF was before that and I hadn't realised 😅🤦‍♂️. Thanks for watching David 👍🏽.

Was the best 4 cylinder i ever owned. Now onto larger and quicker things. Paid 1200 for mine. Had a few mods that took it to 230bhp. Sounded great.

When u panned to the back at the beginning, the spoiler looked like it had a bad repair in the middle?? Also drive it with traction control off cause its a lot better

The spoiler has got a bad repair, it happened not too long before the filming day and Chris hadn't been able to get it sorted. Thanks for watching.

I'm driving a 16 plate diesel Octavia at 145,000miles the electric water pump stopped working so I just keep the internal heater metrix open to make sure it doesn't overheat with fan on low.

Nice review . I'm on my 2nd one. My favourite car I've owned, had all sorts including stuff supposedly much better. Best blend of performance, space, economy, comfort, affordability out there for me. I even prefer it to the MK2 LE I had! Mines std, but tempted to get another one and put some nice appropriate mods on it.

150mph or 150k 😂 when I saw this video I started going through the classifieds. I had a mk1 Leon fr 1.9 TDI so I'm familiar with that era of VAG. What extra servicing is needed apart from the cambelt and water pump.?

    • @CarObsession

Just make sure it's been serviced at the correct times. Door latches can be an issue as they are common fault on VAG cars. Beyond that, nothing else that springs to mind. Thanks for watching pal.

@@superthierry1 I actually wanted to buy one years ago (I test drove it and everything) but couldn't get the finance to work. I then came close to buying one before I bought my Mk2 Leon Cupra, but I wanted something a bit more modern. I do really like the Mk1 Cupra Rs, though, especially the way how they look.

Great video love thee..the rear spoiler sets it off nicely gives it more presence. Two questions.
Can a 6 Speed gearbox be “easily” fitted and how much to parts and labour. 2nd k04 turbo upgrade again how much for parts and labour. Thanks for the responses..👍🏾

    • @dreams2drive450
      @dreams2drive450 2 роки тому +2

      1) Yes it can be fitted, the ease comes down to the skill set of the person carrying out the work. You'll the parts as well - clutch, flywheel, hubs, driveshafts etc.
      2) the downpipe and exhaust will need upgrading. It's hard to give an exact figure as it comes down to the parts you're using. I've seen replica K04 turbos for £250, can't comment on their longevity though.
Ultimately, it is possible on both counts, but it comes down to how much you're prepared to spend or the time you want to put in.

    • @superthierry1

@@dreams2drive450 ah great many thanks. I owned a Mk1 Leon TDI fr 150 and I'm so accustomed to a 6 speed manual. The extra gear at 70mph makes the difference. Maybe make a video on the above mentioned of what one can do with the Octavia Vrs as it seems like a great project for "little" outlay. Thanks again 👍🏿👍🏿😎
