So crazy that would be having to deal with snow. Here in sunny QLD Australia it's mostly the sun and cyclones that tend to mess our solar systems up. I thought being a furnace bloke you might have to weight up is it also worth heating the panels to make them generate electricity a little quicker. Have to love what Starlink did with their dish putting a heater on it for your colder climates, I have to keep mine away from the roof because of the heat lol.
I went with bifacials for my ground mount partially due to snow. The panels get light from behind and produce power, which warms them up and the snow melts and rolls off faster. I've not looked to see if the back faces of the panels frost or if it's just the fronts... if it's just the fronts I'd imagine they defrost faster too. I don't think bifacial panesl would help much flat against a roof though.
There is a new study showing that vertically mounted bifacial panels are more efficient due to lower losses from heat. Either the Netherlands or Denmark, can't recall.
Gary your roof is medal and holds the temp and keeps the unit from warming up as the ground level ones you will always produce less power in the winter than in the summer if the roof was black you would find the frost and snow would melt faster
Why is everyone so engaged with solar panels and lithium batteries. They are so detrimental to our environment. We should be using ac generators running on banks of capacitors; I have built three so far. The battery in my older systems were used to start the generator. And later were replaced with electronics. If you are interested I could drawl you a basic schematic for my generators. They are very simple machines, no batteries required unless it shuts down and all the capacitors in the system are depleted. But with a jump or a crank handle they can be restarted easily. Or a battery can be added to start the system but I dispise batteries and prefer not to use them at all ..
@PrivateOrdover - no such thing as environmentally benign electricity generation be it renewable or conventional. only way i know of to save the environment is to consume less.

The solution to your problem is to move south to where the weather is better.
