Making a Little Apothecary Wall Cabinet
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2019
- Hi! This cabinet is made of solid quartersawn sapele that I had left from my first apothecary cabinet build almost two years ago. The dimensions are about 40" x 20" x 7". The joinery for the outer case uses dowels while the inner dividers use stopped dados. I used AutoCAD to model the drawing but usually measure off my workpiece to get the exact fit right.
The drawers are made of maple but feature a walnut book match running vertically. The drawer hardware along with the hooks had conflicting finishes so I painted them to match. The finish on the wood is danish oil.
The fabric was picked out from a local fabric store and is stapled to a 1/2" plywood pack panel. Behind that panel is a 1/2" French cleat which mates with another cleat on the wall.

It looks very modern, clean and stylish. The little cubby drawers give it that expensive designer flare. Very impressive and makes me want to start one right now (but as it's 02.17 a.m. I don't think the neighbors would be too happy if I did).
Thank you! :)
Really nice build. Great fabric. 👍👍
I love this. Very handy in an entrance way.
I think I consistently want to make the things I see you build more than any other channel. Just amazing design and craftsmanship.
I also really appreciate that you use a dowling jig rather than a Festool domino for joinery. Just makes the projects seem more accessible.
That's cool to hear, thank you. I'm glad you appreciate the use of dowels; I like using them for the exact reason you stated.
One of my favorite projects ive seen in a long while. Wonderful design
Thanks so much!
Great work! Your apothecary pieces are some of my favorite examples of painting with grain.
Thank you Ian. That’s a cool way to phrase it, thanks.
Ungh that gradient-effect white-dark grain on the draws... makes this look like some kind of delicious Italian dessert that I want to eat. That is a truly stunning bit of design.
Lol thank you Alex!
The book match with the drawers is awesome 👍 the fabric as well :)
Thank you!!
Love the fabric backer and that grain matching is magnifico!
Love the way the drawer-fronts turned out.
simply magnificent
I Love this wall cabinet! Great job on your build!
The fabric really sets it off-way cool--
Looks great. I love the fabric and the choise of wood for the drawer fronts. Amazing work!
Really lovely piece of furniture.
Loved it man.
I liked the fabric a lot more then expected.
That's something very special you built there. I can only hope to have such good inspirations in the future of my woodworking life.
wow! I love the grain continuity on those drawers! thanks for the video
Great job dude!
Good job! I really like your videos. Keep making them.

@@parillaworks One of the interesting principals for a bonsai is the pot must NOT detract from the tree. Your fabric detracts from your craftmanship. It is to busy.
Very nice 👌
Beautiful build!! This really turned out nice!
Thanks Donny!
Beautiful work once again! I’m a huge fan of apothecary cabinets. 👍
Thanks! I might have another big cabinet in the works soon.
I like this piece of furniture so much!!!! Great grain on the drawers and that touch that reminds mek woodworks!

Thanks David ;)
Really nice work!
Thanks Blake! I'm excited to see the finished bar cart you have in the works.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail my first thought was "this dude is a 52 boxes fan!" lol Beautiful work my man, and I love the sapwood walnut drawer fronts!
Thank you! Big fan of Matt and his work. He plays with scale and lines really well.
Awesome
Very beautiful. I think you out did yourself this time!
Thank you Bekim!
wonderful job...i wish we had the tools of today when i was learning...keep up the good work in teaching the next generation
Thank you!
I like the fabric! Beautiful build mate. The drawer made me chuckle.
Thanks Bennie!
Beautiful as always! That is a great trick with the double sided tape to secure your routing guide - seems much simpler than fighting clamps and angles like I do now. love it.
Thank you! I use double sided tape any time I can. Jigs, CNC work, you name it!
Beautiful, never thought of a fabric covered backing.
Thank you!
I think ornate wallpaper could be good alternative to material for covering the plywood back pice.
Great video man
Thanks Dwight!
this is so cute!!!!!!!!!!!! i've used wallpaper before in the back of cabinets before but using fabric is much less destructive......you could change the fabric out too or get rid of it if you got bored with it.....what a cool idea.
Thanks Elle! That's exactly what we were thinking! If the look wears on us we can just swap is out for something else.
13:22 OCD sufferers look away now. It'll give you nightmares for days!!!
Not true!!!
My obsession is the 2 1 2 2 pattern so thank you for pointing this out
My only reaction was "WHY!"
my brain: drawer sideways, don’t like that
People who write shit like this usually don't suffer from what they describe.
Love the fabric. Makes me think that wallpaper over plywood would work too.
Thanks Neil! It definitely would.
I am blown away by this one. I was worried that the fabric would distract too much from the shelves or those eye catcher drawers but seeing it filled I don't think that is an issue. While the pattern is noticable it doesn't take away at all, the blue is muted and a very nice contrast to the overall color of the piece itself.
Perhaps if you ever do a project like this again you could use contact paper or glue on wallpaper as a backdrop, those in my mind would be a bit more durable while offering a similar variety that the fabric gives.
Thank you! I appreciate take from this project. I agree wholeheartedly. Also, I'm sure the wallpaper would work well too.
Looks nice! I'm a fan of the M.K. Fabric technique...
Thank you!
Another awesome build John! 👍🏻 That walnut set it off and that fabric was a cool idea! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Bill!
parillaworks You’re welcome John!
Great result, very nice combination of pleasing esthetics and functionality. I particularly like the wood grain pattern on the boxes and the fabric back. Well designed and well made. If you would ask me.
Thanks a lot!!
Great piece! I’ve voted for the grain pattern that you chose on your Instagram page. I agree the fabric is a love or hate thing. I’m on the not in love with side. I think a fabric is a cool idea, that pattern is just a bit busy for my taste. Not that it really matters, it’s at your house not mine LOL! I love the sideways draw shot!
Thank you Tom!
Dude u are awesome.
Thanks Sarian!
Wow, what a beautiful piece~!! I love how well your casework went together. You're definitely challenging me to step up my game. That sap wood stripe orientation on the drawer fronts looks fantastic~! When my wife sees me watching this video build (again), I'm sure that she will want one of these to match the apothecary cabinet I made for her. I too like the look of the fabric over the back, as well as the Matt Kenney-inspired polka dot box sitting on the top shelf~! ;-)
Great work~!!
Thanks a lot Andrew!
13:22 made me laugh. This piece turned out awesome and I do agree that not using the through-dados made it look a lot sharper. I also really like the fabric in the back. Great idea.
Thank you Matthew! I think I'll stay with the stopped dados from now on.
That looks really nice Parilla! Love working wit9get the dowel max jig. orded it like 2 days ago! Gonna have fun destroying the cheapo harbor freight jig I got a few years ago
Thanks Joe! It’s a great jig!
crips, nice
I really thought those drawer pulls were going to take away from the contrasting sapwood and walnut, but it actually looks great!
Thanks David. My initial plan was to do a subtle little pull made of a dark wood but I ended up going with the label pulls to match the other cabinet. Glad I did!
Очень круто!!
wow..
Great work! Wondering how you come up with your spacer size to get even drawers or a given length. I have a project in progress and can’t figure out how to measure for size.
Thanks Brad. It's usually trial and error but I typically start with the rough drawer size and work up from there. In this case I wanted the drawers in the neighborhood of 4" x 4". That size made the overall cabinet feel too small so I upped them to 4.25" x 4.25" which gave me the 9" x 9" squares I mentioned (4.25" drawer + 4.25" drawer + 1/2" divider). And finally, when I altered the material thicknesses of the case and dividers, I had to adjust the drawers to 4.3125". All that to say, it's a lot of back and forth to find a happy medium. I run into similar issues with larger apothecary cabinets when a client wants different width drawers. Hope that helps.
Very nice, I always look forward too your new video's. Are you still pleased with the Scorpion jointer/planer?
Thank you Darren! It's holding up well and doing its job. I haven't had any hiccups with it though I think I need to get a stronger DC to keep up with some of the wider boards I plane.
Very nice👍. I hope you don't need it
Looks great - how do you get the cabinet to sit so flush to the wall despite the french cleat? It doesn't look as though it's 1/2 inch proud of the wall that it should be with the cleat, if you know what I mean?
Thanks Toby! The French cleat is recessed in the back of the cabinet. The rabbet in the back is 1" wide and the 1/2" back panel occupies half of that. The other half is the French cleat.
👍
Great Job! I am inspired to create something similar! Anyone notice drawer sideways at 13:20
Thanks Richard!
Beautiful! I'm a little concerned about a heavy purse prying the bottom hooks loose given the screw layout, though.
Thanks! I was a little worried too but the screws are #6 or #8 so they're decently big.
@@parillaworks No concern about the vertical forces against the dowels? If the cabinet was on the floor, the forces would be pushing down, keeping the dowels in place, whereas here the forces look to be pulling against your dowels. I know dowels are generally considered to be stronger than screws, but I'm wondering if that holds in this environment. Do you find they hold up okay?
Really nice piece - the fabric idea is not something I'd seen, and I like it a lot for the right space and client/spouse. Dumb question - how do you deal with glue getting on the surface - do you wipe it off wet, or deal with it after it dries - I have mixed results either way, and sanding it out of tight spaces after glue-up like that is not fun.
Thanks Lawrence. In most cases I mask the surface with tape but I forgot to do that this time around. I try not to use too much glue but in the event of squeeze out I either wipe it away immediately with a chisel and wet towel or let it skin over a bit and scrape away. In areas like the drawer cubbies I don't have to be as careful because they won't be seen. You can also pre-finish your parts so that glue doesn't get absorbed as easily.
Thanks for the helpful answer! The piece is so beautiful that it didn’t occur to me that those areas wouldn’t be seen. I’m just starting to learn CNCing, and have masked off areas that I am cutting that will later need to be painted- same concept as masking before gluing. With paint, though, I have to spray with shellac before I and after I cut to keep the paint from wicking into the surrounding area. Not an issue with glue. Thanks again - really beautiful piece!
When your plunging the router down and your guide bushing isn't yet touching the wood, how do make sure it goes in properly
Thats a great question. Luckily the bearing was able to ride the template before the cutter hit the workpiece, but it was a little too close for comfort. Next time I'll make the template thicker to avoid that problem.
Pretty good build. But I wanted to see this cabinet with the white-cream color fabric more...
Thank you! Picking the fabric was one of the hardest parts.
13:22 argh!!!!!
What dowel jig do you use?
It's called the Dowelmax.
13:23 drawer is messed up i'll take it off your hands...... haha. Seriously nice work love the look of the final piece.
Good catch ;) I’ll have it shipped out ASAP!!
Those drawers tho
13:23 - did you do that on purpose to see if anyone pay attention to your video? 🤔😀
Possibly ;)
13:22 You did that on purpose, did you! 😜
Maybe ;)
One of the interesting principals for a bonsai is the pot must NOT detract from the tree. Your fabric detracts from your craftmanship. It is to busy.
That’s a fun way to put it. We knew it would be a bit of a polarizing choice.
wrong choice in fabric....it looks too busy
Thanks Greg, I agree its a little busy but that's almost the best part of it you know? I agree it could be a bit much though.
I've been routering the hell out of stuff lately. And doing it way more ghetto than you.
Too much color with the fabric, your pieces don’t shine. Sorry
