  • Warning: This episode contains descriptions of violence.
The relationship between two democratic allies fell to its lowest point in history this week, after Canada accused India of assassinating a Sikh community leader in British Columbia in June.
Mujib Mashal, The Times’s South Asia bureau chief, explains this stunning accusation - and what India’s reaction to it tells us about the era of its leader, Narendra Modi.
Guest: Mujib Mashal (www.nytimes.com/by/mujib-mashal), The New York Times’s bureau chief for South Asia.
    Background reading:
    • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada said agents of India (www.nytimes.com/2023/09/18/wo...) had assassinated a Sikh community leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was fatally shot in British Columbia in June.
    • Mr. Nijar was a prominent advocate (www.nytimes.com/2023/09/19/wo...) of the creation of an independent Sikh nation that would include parts of India’s Punjab State.
    • The charge, which the Indian government has strongly rejected, may fuel a rift (www.nytimes.com/2023/09/20/wo...) between Canada’s Sikhs and Hindus.

It's deeply unsettling to witness the sheer audacity with which Canada, a nation that prides itself on its moral high ground, has been harboring and providing a safe haven to individuals with a notorious track record of terrorism. Hardeep Singh Nijjar was not just an "activist" as some Western media outlets would have you believe. He was a leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force, an organization banned in India due to its involvement in heinous acts of terror. The Khalistan movement has been responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians in India, including the tragic bombing of Air India Flight 182 in 1985, which resulted in the loss of 329 innocent lives.
India has, on multiple occasions, requested Canada to extradite such Khalistani terrorists. Yet, Canada has consistently turned a blind eye, prioritizing vote bank politics over global security. It's a blatant disregard for the countless lives lost to the terror perpetrated by these individuals. The question arises: Why does Canada, which claims to champion human rights and global peace, allow its soil to be used as a breeding ground for extremism?
The narrative that Nijjar was merely an activist is not only misleading but also a gross misrepresentation of the truth. It's high time Canada introspects its policies and stops its double standards. Sheltering individuals with blood on their hands, all while preaching righteousness, is a hypocrisy that cannot and should not be ignored.

      Five Eyes intelligence.
US intelligence actually worked with Canadian intelligence on this. And this is also why you see UK, Aus, NZ, and US talking about this matter first, rather than other allies of Canada like in NATO. Five Eyes is much closer, and they’ll trust Canada over India every time since it’s their own agents who likely know of this.
And if you think they’ll reveal their assets and informants to India, then you’re dreaming.
EDIT: Now even timesofindia admits the Five Eyes involvement in this now. Even they admit that Canada got sigint from "an unnamed ally" (obviously the USA for anyone with a functioning brain). Maybe now the Indian nationalist propagandists can shut up now since their own state-controlled media isn't even bothering denying it now.

For example, went into detail about Nijjar’s political activities which is what Canadians want to highlight but for the Indian side all the accusations were put under umbrella of criminal activities. He also seemed to paint Nijjar as upstanding Canadian citizen while failing to mention he was repeatedly rejected for citizenship and no one knows how he finally got his citizenship.

To my all dear friends in canada.
    1. Every 5 years elections happen in Punjab state, and this year 1/117 seats have been won by pro khalistani.
    2. They make claims of land which was under Sikh empire in 18th century. If such claims are made then neither America nor Canada must exist and earlier natives must be given the land. Also the empire was spread significantly to Pakistan with capital being in Lahore. There was population of 1.67 million sikhs in Pakistan Punjab which now is only 21000. Yet these people dont ask for that Punjab. This shows who supports them.
    3. We Indians do support freedom of speech, but its clear that this movement is supported by Pakistan and perhaps China. Pakistan is host of terrorism, hence for India it becomes more than freedom of speech issue. Just imagine the consequences if USA starts supporting Anti Canada things. I would be even more worried than what China is currently doing and freedom of speech may go down the drain.
    4. Hence, i just wish that India Canada relations are not jeopardized by some 3rd country.

Fully agree with what you are saying except for #3. I'm a big fan of Modi's economy and anti-corruption. But c'mon, he has severe issues with free speech. There is no evidence at all to suggest the Khalistani movement is supported by Pakistan and China. As you yourself said Khalistan barely exists in India. Modi government has arrested people who call themselves separatists even without committing a crime. IT SHOULD NOT BE A CRIME TO JUST SUPPORT KHALISTAN MOVEMENT. That is part of free speech. Allow people to say what they want, even when you disagree with them or think them stupid.
Modi was severely anti-free speech during the farmer's protests. Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, admitted he had 100s of emails from the Modi government to suppress speech during this time. If he didn't comply his offices and employees in Delhi would get raids committed to them.
And they banned the BBC documentary. It is not the government's duty to decide what is misinformation or disinformation. Indians are smart enough to decide for ourselves.
In all PM Modi has lots of strengths. Free speech is not one of them.

If Trudo wanted to sleep with terrorists for his electoral gain, that is his problem and the fate of Canada. But if he patronise them and protect them in the guise of freedom and free speech and in turn these terrorists threaten balkanisation of India, attck hindus and temples in canada, attack its embassy and diplomats, threaten assassination of Indian leaders, that is totally unacceptable. Sikhs in India are very peaceful and dignified people who indulge in no violence. But under Trudos patronage, atleast a minority of Sikhs has turned to extremism. Terrorists are like Frankenstein,it will turn against its patrons eventually, that is what happened in Pakistan. All nation has responsibilty to eleminate terrorists as there are no good terrorists or bad terrorists. Trudo does not understand it as his minority govt will fall if Khalistani withdraw support. Trudo interfered in Indias internal matter when he made a political statement supporting farmers agitation two years back. And the same Trudo is accusing other countries of interfering in Canadas internal affairs. What a hypocrite.

My comment in NYT on the subject, hope this will be helpful to those who tend to be biased either way, please read, thanks.
Read carefully JT's words as reported: "Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar," The PM's statement is carefully worded and reflects unproven accusations of the isolated pro-separatist Khalistan forces operating in Canada. JT only says his govt intelligence is 'pursuing' 'allegations' that could only be 'credible.' He apparently seeks cooperation of the Indian govt too, to get to the bottom of this accusation. Seeing his leadership of the party threatened, his coalition precariously dependent on the support of Jagmeet Singh's NDP and repeatedly snubbed by the Modi govt for allowing anti-India activities on the soil of Canada, JT is in a bind. He wants to forge a permanent link with JS and lock it into an abiding political alliance. One sure way is to serenade the separatist Sikh supporters of JS. Jagmeet himself has extended veiled support to the cause of Khalistan incurring displeasure of the Canadian Sikhs who aren't sold on separatism. Politicians in a democracy make unproven allegations against anyone if this action attracts a sizable chunk of voters. This is not new. JT has done a good job of cheering up the pro-Khalistan elements in Canada at the same time keeping his allegation against India vague. He knows a clear accusation of this nature could drag him into the ICJ where he would have to prove the charges.

    [1 Recommend]
Binoy Shanker Prasad @Anwar In this case, Justin Trudeau is not accused of lying in parliament, although politicians in high positions lie all the time. He was simply amplifying "fears" of a section of Sikh Canadians who suspected a "potential" link between the assassination of Mr Nijjar and the Indian intelligence agencies. It wasn't a definitive finding of the Canadian intelligence and that's the reason Justin Trudeau's govt "would pressure India to cooperate with the investigation into the killing.."

The Canadian Government is not as innocent as portrayed in the media. Recently, there was a massive protest in India funded by the Canadian government. There is always another side to the story, but Western media often only presents one side of the story and history. Regarding the issue of immigration from India, Indian immigrants play a crucial role in driving Canada’s economy, which would have collapsed without them. Additionally, Canada’s real estate-based economy would have experienced a significant decline.
The Canadian government lacks sufficient evidence to support its case. In contrast, in India, we have abundant evidence and proof of Canada’s involvement in our domestic affairs, masked behind the veil of freedom of speech

After going through this message, “my children’s planning to go for higher study in Canada has been cancelled…,”
If my money is being used to disturb my mother land by Canada political administration, I don’t want to send my kids to Canada..,
The study loan may be more than 1.5 crores. If this money is going there. The part of money will be or may be used against my nation’s integrity. My mother land is more important than my children’s studies at nonsense country..,
My country is more important for me than my children’s studies..,
Let every Indian parents should rethink before sending their kids to Canada for higher studies.
    Jai Hind..,🙏😊

Interesting and even discussion. Canada has opened its arms to not only Sihks but many indians and itvis always sad to see the violent and prejudicial bebaviour brought to our shores. Believing in a safe place for those left behind shoyld never include violence. Modi is certainly pumping this up to his own warped benefit
