First and foremost, nobody has been complicit in anything. Rishi Sunak can’t have any say over what happened when he wasn’t present as an important UK parliament member or UK prime minister during the Sri Lankan civil war. Nobody could’ve had any control over it. The UK did have an indirect role to play in the conflict between the Tamils and Sinhalese in Sri Lanka and the current persecution of Tamils by fueling tensions between the two communities during their rule of the island. But they were only capitalizing on a conflict that went back centuries to Kalinga Magda’s invasion of Sri Lanka. Second of all, the Tamils are an indispensable part of India as history shows. India, as a country and a civilization, has the Tamil people playing an important part of it. The Tamils in history, have always been a part of Indian civilization and Indian culture. They are, by all standards, Indians. Countries like Singapore and Malaysia, where a large number of Tamil people reside, have “Indians” as one of the three main races - which have a specific meaning as an ethnic community and not a nationality. This means that the Tamil people have a sense that they are a part and parcel of India and not a separate ethnic community. Tamils should try to ask for a place where they can pursue their culture freely and slowly, gradually and eventually, make themselves a part and parcel of India. Even Pongal is an Indian festival, as it is the Tamil version of Makar Sankranti.
