  • Sissel Kyrkjebø performing the Norwegian national anthem "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" ("Yes, we love this country") at a TV-concert in Norway on May 17, 2020. Originally a patriotic song, it came to be commonly regarded as the de facto national anthem of Norway in the early 20th century, after being used alongside "Sønner av Norge" ("Sons of Norway") since the 1860s. It was officially adopted in 2019. The lyrics were written by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson between 1859 and 1868, and the melody was written by his cousin Rikard Nordraak sometime during the winter of 1863 and 1864. It was first performed publicly on 17 May 1864 in connection with the 50th anniversary of the constitution. Usually only the first and the last two verses are sung.
Sissel, the international singing sensation and national treasure of Norway, is established as one of the world’s leading crossover sopranos. Her angelic and powerful voice has made Sissel a national institution and she has sung all over the world, selling over ten million solo albums. She has contributed haunting vocal tracks for the soundtrack to Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, and has been performing duets with singers like Charles Aznavour, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Mario Frangoulis, Josh Groban, Brian May, Neil Sedaka, Bryn Terfel and Russell Watson. In 2005, she was knighted by the King of Norway, as the youngest ever to receive this honour. And in 2006, her album 'The Spirit of the Season' with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir went to number-one on the Billboard Classical Charts, and received a Grammy nomination. A very remarkable voice that only comes once in our lifetime.

Beautiful. I don't understand Norwegian, but I wouldn't most likely understand the words when angels sing either. I don't understand what makes the patterns on flowers, but I can certainly admire their beauty. Understanding not required.

I only lived in Norway for a few month. Looking back 50 years now...the best few months of my life perhaps. But one does not know until after. Hindsight is 20/20.

I am 'born and bred' from the United Kingdom.... It would be virtually unheard of to sing 'God Save the Queen' so proudly on national television....In our country, our National Anthem is mumbled in the corner of rooms, indeed, most people don't even know the words! It has become an embarrassment to sing it loud and proud, like this lady does with her anthem....Well done, and a beautiful voice too 😊😊😊👍👍👍

I cannot even imagine something like that. My entire life, all of Norway has sung this song and many others like it. proudly every 17th of May. Here it would be an embarrassment to not know the lyrics

I am obviously not norwegian, but each year i look forward to 17 may to see if there is a good rendition of norwegian national anthem. A lot of time i was disappointed by the same arrangements all over, but this version is one of the most beautiful rendition, but the most beautiful one is the one which was sang during the ship launching. First verse was by sissel, second by ylvis (if i am not mistaken). Recording was bad, but that was the most beautiful ever. Would be glad if it is remade or if someone has a good recording of it.

Denne sagen gir fred, jeg er 14 år og er etnisk norsk, som vil si at familien min ikke er fra Norge, men jeg elsker denne sangen, jeg synes Norge er et fint land:) Glad jeg forstår dette.
Translation: This song gives peace, i’m 14 years old and i’m ethnic Norwegian, that means my family is not from Norway (but i am born and raised in Norway), but still i love this song, i mean Norway is a nice country:) Happy i understand this.
This is in another dialect, that’s why it might sounds weird for someone;) Maybe u’ve heard it in a other dialect?, Norway contains different dialects, haha.

I believe Sissel was lip-synching this national anthem! Pay close attention to 2:16 through 2:17 to see what I mean. In other words, she was not singing this live but a pre-recorded track of her singing this is actually what we are hearing. If true, 👎.

Yes, that's right. Norwegian is very similar to Danish, especially when it comes to words. However, the pronunciation is slightly different. - I once learned some Danish, so it was pretty easy for me to be able to read Norwegian text. - Languages are always interesting. Greetings, Eckard

Sissel is from Bergen and sings in that dialect. Notably, most dialects from the South West and South of Norway feature the guttural R, as opposed to the alveolar tap/trill common in the rest of the country. The guttural R is also found in Danish. Bear in mind that the lyrics were written in 1859, a time when Norwegians basically wrote in Danish.
