This is the same game engine used to build Morrowind back in 1998. That is 20 years ago.
Sure, they added new features and renamed it to Gamebryo for Oblivion. Then added more features to the same base core and used it for Fallout 3. Then they used the exact same core with more duct tape holding on new features like two handed combat and called it Creation Kit for Skyrim. Then once more with duct tape to add in settlement building and used it for Fallout 4.
It is literally the same core engine with features glued on as they decided on something new. It is bloated, unoptimized, and showing its age.
Hell, it was showing its age with the expansions for Morrowind. It took community effort to create an unofficial patch it fix over 2000 mistakes Bethesda made.

There's a card-sharing system where you can share a perk with your entire party, and is limited by your Charisma. For every 3 points in Charisma, you can share 1 point's worth of perk cards. Meaning, at the max of 15 Charisma, you can share the benefits of a 5-point card with your entire party.
Also, you need higher Charisma to equip Charisma-related perks in the first place, such as extra experience when traveling with a team or better prices at vendors.

Yes. People say Bethesda are bad. But so is Digital Homicide. The reason Digital Homicide isn't an industry leader is because it doesn't have millions of fanboys who will buy the shit it cranks out multiple times and then sing it's praises to the high hills.
Bethesda is bad because we, as gamers, let it get bad. Sure we all complain about it's dated engine and graphics, and the gameplay that gets shallower with every release, but we still buy the games. When we do that, our criticisms are meaningless. Why should they bother listening to us when the game is already making them millions if not billions of dollars?
It will take a true failure for Bethesda to change it's ways. This MAY be that failure, but I doubt it since Bethesda fanboys would literally pay $60 for a game that has no purpose other than to crash on launch. They would still call it GOTY

How has Bethesda not yet realized that Fallout is more than just walking around the wasteland killing Fallout themed enemies and collecting guns named after puns. The whole deal of creating a roleplaying engine in a specific setting was to explore the storytelling possibilities of said settings, altering our perception of what would character interactions be in a completely different world than the one we as humans are used to, and using that to create all sorts of fun scenarios, like what would it be like to have the Roman empire in a post apocalyptic wasteland.
This game just further evidences that Bethesda just copy pasted their elder scrolls formula over a setting they had no idea how to exploit, while also copy pasting the recognizable elements from the old games into different time periods of the setting where they don't really make sense, and the few new things they come up with are always new types of things to shoot at or shoot with, rather than complex reconstructions of quirky micro societies like the ones from the old games. This concept of Fallout 76 relies on the Skinnerbox nature of this engine and doesn't realize that what you find is never more interesting that the why and how you found them, in RPGs the journey should always be more interesting than the destination because their open-ended nature allows for the player to seamlessly create stories within the stories that the game has to tell.

FO3, FO4 and FO76 have nothing to do with lore of FO1 and FO2. when Bethesda bought the IP, they threw all materials into trash can and made their own mash-up of things they liked (including out-of-lore things from FO:T, like Brotherhood splitting up and the liberal fraction travelling to the East Coast). FO:NV is actually, give or take, what Black Isle wanted for FO3 (story wise). Obsidian, at that time, consisted of a lot of people working at Black Isle during FO3 development - that's why FO:NV feels like the real third (and so far final) entry to the series. Don't get me wrong - I liked FO3, it was a good game, but it just wasn't the world we loved back in 90's. I always think about it as an alternative universe.

    • @Khanemis
      @Khanemis 6 років тому +59

Unfortunately Bethesda thinks that a proper Fallout game is made only by recycling the same themes (super-mutants, brotherhood, ghouls, vault-tec) over and over again no matter what the lore actually says. So everytime they force one of those things in their game they use some half-baked excuse to justify that.
That's one of the things that made New Vegas so great - it was a fresh perspective on the world that honored its lore (even that appearance of supermtutants was limited and well grounded).
I really wish that Bethesda would hire someone who can come up with an original expansion of Fallout's world instead of repeating everythingg like a broken record.

Fallout 76 is proof that Bethesda doesn't understand what Fallout is. Fallout is a character driven series, the plot is always about various different interests butting heads and the player reacting to these interests. In both Fallout 3 and 4, every character was a plot device. The game wasn't about the individuals, it was about Bethesda's story. Fallout 76 is the natural conclusion of this misunderstanding of Fallout. The removal of NPCs is quite literally the antithesis of what Fallout always tried to be. Fallout's story is the story of humanity, not some pathetic zombie disease story about the Scorch.

    • @libaf5471
      @libaf5471 6 років тому +37

Fallout 76 is literally the logical continuation of bethesda's way of making fallout. 3 and 4 both had an on-rails main quest with isolated side quest storylets, that have nothing to do with the main one and some of which just act as a spawning pool for radiant quests. 76 just took it one step further and removed the need for a story as a vehicle to deliver the mmo style radiant quests. Now they focus on what they've always done well with fallout: create a large, open space and fill it with wacky stuff. I just hope someone picks up the mantle of obsidian and makes a story driven single player game on bethesda's engine again, so I can get some more fallout to play. It's clear bethesda has no intention of ever doing that again.

Frankly, I am not sure how long Bethesda can keep this up. They are using up all their good will and people don't even expect good games from Bethesda anymore. Fallout 4 sold incredibly well off the backs of the fandom hyping up the game based on the quality of the previous ones, the fanbase is no longer willing to do that. Even the critics who gave Fallout 4 a (much underserved) 10/10 have turned on them with 76. Bethesda is cashing out their good will and this is going to have long term consequences for them. I preordered the collector's edition for both Skyrim and Fallout 4, yet I haven't even bought 76 yet. I know many people who have done the same. I have no trust left to give this company.

    • @CatacombD
      @CatacombD 6 років тому +3

@@mattbenz99 Honestly, I think you guys are missing out on some perspective.
Part of the reason why fallout 4 sold well is because the core gameplay loop of explore, gather, craft, was extremely enjoyable to myself and a lot of folks. I was let down by the story, but I still put a ton of hours into 4, treating it like a gimpy loot lust game. (basically modding the game to hell, and focusing on hunting legendary enemies) Fallout 76 scratches that itch for me perfectly, and I've been playing it obsessively since launch.
My personal hope is that 76 serves the loot lust audience, and that will free up the main line to focus heavily on dialgoue, choice, and story. (because, I love both of those types of games)

Anytime a game like this comes along, I worry. Not so much about microtransactions or bugs or shit gameplay- though I worry on that a lot- but what I stress the most on is that the company, in this case Bethesda, will learn the wrong lesson. They already learned a wrong lesson in fans "wanting multiplayer" to mean changing the genre instead of "let me invite 1 to 3 of my friends to tackle this otherwise enriching single player campaign"... leading to ESO instead of multiplayer Skyrim. But it can potentially be much worse...
I worry that instead of saying "oh, the game style is not good. Let's go back to what makes Fallout a Fallout game and tighten that up", they will instead say "hmmm, guess players don't like Fallout anymore. Let's shutter it."
It is the path EA went down Star Wars and the single player game fans crave. It is the path X-Com almost went down. It is the road being walked with mobile versions of Dungeon Keeper, C&C, and *possibly* Diablo (yeah, they are supposedly working on 4, but SquareEnix is supposedly working on that Final Fantasy remake that's been hinted at since that Sony tech demo... I'll believe it when it actually releases).
I am a HUGE Fallout mark. Ever since I played the PC demo two decades ago, I was hooked. I played EVERYTHING. Even Brotherhood of Steel. I got a copy of Wasteland from some magazine compilation disk after learning about the connection. But this is the first time I was thoroughly uninterested. Not because of everything it is, but because of what it isn't. Fans want a follow-up to New Vegas. Not necessarily because of geography, gameplay, or graphics alone (all of that adds to why), but because that was the best evolution of the "Post Apocalyptic Role Playing Game". This is a decidedly "not that" direction. This is a bland shooter with FO skin and iconography. And if I were certain this was just a side project and there were a NV2 or FO5 coming that gets back to basics, I wouldn't feel so dismal about the future of the franchise.
I'm more stoked for Wasteland 3, and hopefully that path will not be hindered by the recent acquisition.

So now we have an online game that they are going to bail on once they realize online games actually require updates........yay.

Flying Toaster People hoped that Bethesda was aware that they were not on very good standings after fallout 4 and knew that a game that literally doubled down on the elements that fans didn't like (base building, streamlined down dialogue systems, less rpg mechanics), would further escalate the issue if they didn't do something to subvert those expectations. Should've hired rian johnson, he still would've made a more compelling narrative than a literal fucking treasure hunt.

@@FieryShaverdian here's where they failed I think: Fallout has NEVER had great combat. It had decent enough combat but the game is built entirely on the setting and the narrative.
When you decide to build an online version of Fallout, you're sacrificing some of that story/world building. But the core gameplay of Fallout isn't good enough to carry the multiplayer experience. A game like Monster Hunter World has nailed core gameplay. It doesn't need story or world building in order to be fun because the act of playing the game itself is rewarding enough.
That isn't the case with Fallout games where the combat is a means to an end rather than a fun experience in and of itself. So making their entire game built on that alone is a recipe for disaster.

Maybe they just don't care anymore after feeling 'betrayed' with the fallout 4 critical reception or this is just some elaborate survey to see what elements or game genres people would want in a future Bethesda project, just like Fallout 4 could of been a texture pack for a future borderlands/minecraft inspired IP. Instead of the elder scrolls 6 we've had ESO and skyrim released again and again for eight years, why work on better games when you can just make money with a service that's boring and doesn't work. The single player games aren't dead of course, we've had really good ones. It just annoys me.

I feel the same way. I tried to have a conversation with another person at work last night who plays games, and every game they wanted to talk about was an online multiplayer one, usually with microctransactions.
Me: "You excited about the MediEvil remake? I am!"
Them: "What's that? Oh, old stuff. No. But I'm hyped PUBG is finally coming to PS4."
Me: "Oh. Umm . . . do you play anything where you're not shooting other people?"
      Them: "No. Why?"
People nowadays are so obsessed with accomplishing things in games that they no longer care if the game itself is fun: they just want to get rewarded for playing it in the first place, and if that means dropping money on loot boxes and other microtransactions to get their reward fix then they'll do it.

See how he's looting everything? That will last until level 5. Then your stash caps out and you end up playing "Inventory Management 76" for the rest of the game. Remember being able to loot everything in FO4 to make awesome and impressive settlements you could be proud of? Kiss that goodbye unless you are willing to pass up every lootable thing while questing (except adhesive and screws) and then going back later to pick up building supplies piecemeal to make your CAMP. Which has a building limit size that is further restricted by your level. No more selling extra loot to vendors either. All of the vendors are linked to other vendors in their area and have a caps limit of 200. So no point in running around to different vendors to sell, unless you want to spend hours running to each area or spending money to fast travel to those locations-assuming you have discovered them. Once that 200 is gone from one, it's gone from them all. For 24 hours of real time. Maybe. If it doesn't bug out and doesn't replenish at all. Questing and drops gives legendary gear which is usually several levels above your current level. So you can't use it and have no room to store it, best to just drop it on the ground. Especially if it's not something you'll use for your current build-no saving gear for alts with different builds. Nothing is more fun than playing an online game and being rewarded with legendary gear and then being forced to drop it on the ground to rot, right? Remember power armor? Don't even bother picking it up when you find it. Each piece weighs 10 lbs + the 10 lb frame, and you can't even use the lowest pieces until level 30. Plus the cores to run one weighs 3 lbs each. Heavy guns? Again, don't bother. The weight of the gun + the ammo you need to carry to make it viable means you'll be running at your max weight limit most of the game.
They basically made every single MMO mistake that Blizzard did with WoW. Back in 2004. And that they have already fixed (usable loot for your build, being able to save epic gear for later use, having a player auction house-especially since Bethesda stated they wanted to create a player driven economy) You would hope that Bethesda would have at least learned something from the last 20 years of MMO gaming.

This sounds far worse. Classic warcraft had easily obtainable 16 slot bags, plus a bank which you could put up to 6 additional bags into, and not to mention that you could make alts to get more of all of this. Most people had at least 1 bank alt. Guild storages would have several. Furthermore, you could abuse the mailbox system for only 30c per letter for even more storage. An item in the mailbox doesn't count towards an item limit (aka librams), and could sit on as many letters as you wanted to send. Also, unlike later MMOs, they did not have a cash shop selling bags or any kind of space. Back then, there was no cash shop of any kind. All you could buy was THE GAME, and THE SUB. Of course today they have a huge booming store that sells everything under the sun, in addition to still selling the game and the sub...

I get some features are tedious and annoying, however alot of the problems you are complaining about can be easily fixed, such as weight problems being solved via perk cards. Or the fact you can leave power armor pieces on the chassis which the weight will remain 10lb( btw found lv 15 power armor pieces). Sure I found plenty of gear over leveled for me, but I've only been able to find just 2 legendary weapons and they were the right levels for me so I guess I was just lucky. I mean even if it is useless to you, you could always scrap whatever... Instead of just leaving crap on the ground.

Diamond City, while sadly empty, still had interesting charcters in it. Goodneighbour was a great place to go and KLEO still makes me smile though I've heard her dialogue a million times (slight hyperbole there).
Even if you don't like the NPCs in FO4 you still have to admit that losing them is gonna make the world a barren and empty place.
Also losing them means everything bad about this godawful engine is now the primary focus. It could be forgiven when there were decent quests and decent stories and pushed aside when the quests began to suck, but the story was still there. Now the quests suck and the story is hidden so what else are we supposed to focus on? The combat, well that's never been good in a Bethesda game. So we're left with graphics, animations and such. Which are being rendered in a decade old engine... no wonder this game looks like hot garbage, becuase by stripping out what made their Fallout series playable, they've left us with the unplayable remains. Well done Bethesda.
I in no way direct that last part at you Fall, it just occured to me as I was typing out the first paragraph.

      Several reasons:
      1. Games "journalists" have been completely compromised in the last decade or two and they're now just corporate mouthpieces - this has hugely immunised Bethesda and EA from deserved backlash for a long time. Next time you see a "AAA" game come out check out the User Score versus the Critic Reviews. Critic Reviews only drop to about 65% absolute minimum for big releases, even if they're total shite. Indie games get reviewed much more harshly. I don't know how publishers are influencing journos so much but it's clear something is very wrong with the system.
      2. Bethesda have spent huge amounts of money on PR and marketing to sell crap games like this and people keep buying it out of some sort of deranged "loyalty". Then they get buyer's remorse and start trying to defend the game.
      3. Unfortunately a large number of stupid gamers with more money than brain cells are _happy_ paying $14 for blue power armour. This means Bethesda and EA construct these games purely to milk these fools.

You're right when you say that Fallout 76 is a bad concept. No sense of a living, breathing world, or even a hopeful world that can be redeemed, since there are no people. You're not fighting for anything.
Why they didn't just make a game where the players play as lackeys of the FO4 factions is mind boggling. That's easy, and everyone liked them. Then you can keep settlements and people.

The protagonists of all the Fallouts except 4 are voiceless blank slates, how are characters like that going to breath life into this world? I know that you are supposed to provide your own objectives but that is limited by the game itself. In Fallout 4, you fight, explore, build, and engage in whacky conversations and follow the crazy lives of the NPCs. In Fallout games you enter into a world with people affected by the harshness of the world who have recreated civilization after nuclear annihilation. But in Fallout 76 I just don't see where the retention time is going to come from, perhaps 24 players band together and create a mission to fight for something, or perhaps Bethesda could add competitive levels to equipment so that there is an ever-present yearning for better gear, like Destiny. Maybe make the player count higher, especially since they made the map bigger. But once again, I just don't know where the retention time is going to come from.

The Creation Engine is essentially a revamped version of the Gamebryo engine, which Bethesda used on projects dating back as far as Morrowind. Each successive game Bethesda released relied on a tweaked and expanded Gamebryo engine. In 2011, they basically rewrote the graphics pipeline for the Gamebryo engine for Skyrim. This is what is known as the Creation engine. They tweaked and expanded the engine for Fallout 4, and now Fallout 76. Bethesda is notable for releasing... buggy games, and this is largely ignored due to the typical quality of those games. The problem comes when you realize that each new version of their game engine introduced new bugs, and little work was done to remove these as time went on. The thought that Bethesda could make a stable online game using this mess is laughable. It would require a complete rewrite (which obviously didn't happen) or a completely different engine (which also did not happen). Honestly, it looks like they just took the Creation Engine as it was for FO4, plugged in some netcode, told it to call home every once and a while and called it a day. Considering the reputation of the company for releasing broken products, the result is predictable.

Generally they're either completely incapable of grasping the concept that MOST people don't put 40 hours a week into a single video game, or, they consider anyone that doesn't put in 40 hours a week to be a filthy casual pleb that doesn't deserve to make any progress at all.
Due to the fact they actually have that much free time to burn they're also the most prolific posters in the development forum for the game. After the game is released any thread in which a person who plays 1/4 as much as them expresses frustration about it taking 10 months of their free time to achieve minute levels of progress will get a reply from 40-hour a week guy smugly saying "I don't find it hard to progress."

That’s basically what nearly all video games have become. The focus on competition, multiplayer, and monetization has absolutely DESTROYED most video games for me.
I like falling into a game and getting immersed in its world. And I don’t mean needing to spend 8+ hours a day on it-immersed, I mean just falling in love with the fun of it-immersed.
I remember playing a game like oh, idk, Mark of Kri for PS2, and picking it up for a few hours every couple of days, and being absolutely head over heels for that thing, and feeling like I’m inside that world. It wasn’t trying to sell me something. It wasn’t asking me to compete online against children and hardcore gamers. It had unlockables that were actually fun to go after and not shoehorned into the experience because “achievement/trophy hunters” demanded them.
There have only been a generously large handful of truly fun video games in the last generation and a half. Hell, even games like Elder Scrolls are fucking abysmal.
Everyone tells me how AMAZING a game like Skyrim is. It’s really not. It’s a job. Yeah, it’s a silly physics engine, and if you get to level 10 you’re basically playing godmode for the rest of the game which can be a source of minor enjoyment when used sparingly. But good lord, I essentially never had fun playing Skyrim. I’ve played it a number of times with new builds and play styles, and every time it’s the same damn thing. Grind your ass off for no reason, get over-encumbered, do math to figure out what has the best resale to weight ratio, watch a glitchy animation here or there, hear the same five people speak, and do actual work for NPCs that are usually cunts to you and will actively agitate you.
People find this enjoyable? Chopping wood and being an errand boy? Getting chastised daily for not getting to the cloud district often enough? Having creepy court wizards robotically recite a script at you about how great they are and how much you stink? Mistakingly touching something you weren’t supposed to, being chased down by the law, get forced to pay a fine, go to a loading screen, and get transported to the front of a castle after processing?
If you want to live a peasantry feudal life just join a medieval faire and get on with it.
I feel like crowd mentality has just totally fucked everything. Everybody expects it/wants it to be the best thing ever, and this bugged out glitchy mess gets all these free passes and praise because nobody wants to be the person that points out how boring and dull and bland it all is.

Fallout 76 has major flaws in addition to what Jim says here. Firstly, there's a 400 pound limit on storage for your character, and now that everything weighs something, it quickly becomes counter-productive to gather materials past a certain point or to store anything besides Junk in your storage. This means you have to seriously consider if storing that 20+ pound legendary Fat Man is worth it when you also have to keep mini-nukes that weigh 3 pounds each on hand. This coupled with the fact that as items get stronger, they generally weigh more, and you quickly find yourself extremely limited in terms of the options you have for playing your character.
Power armor frames can be found at early levels, but the gear is normally unwearable at the level range they're found in. This coupled with the fact that you can only store 1 Power Armor frame at a time (granted, I couldn't imagine storing more than 1), will mean that it's pretty pointless to get them prior to when they're actually useful.
Vendors always have 200 caps, and whenever you buy something from them, they only get a fraction of the caps that you pay out. This makes the "Better prices" perk useless since a lot of times you end up just dropping items you don't currently need due to how limited your storage is. Also keep in mind that despite being able to buy ammo, you can't sell it, meaning that it's pointless to pick up ammo for weapons you don't currently have.
Trading is currently bugged, and if you offer up an item and close the window out before you go to the acceptance screen, there's a chance that the items you offered up are just gone. It also doesn't function well as a way for people to actually purchase goods from one another, since other players aren't exactly willing to purchase all of your useless weapons and armor, especially when they can see the good stuff.
Workshops, besides being a "better" C.A.M.P., can glitch out and cause either the resources you're trying to farm to stop working, or your turrets to go crazy and attack a random structure in the area for no reason. Opposing players can also try to take over your base, but none of your turrets or defenses will try to protect your base from them while they do so. While the act of claiming does open players up to PvP for the short time that they are claiming the workshop, they won't actually become Wanted unless they destroy something in your area. The player trying to take over the workshop is also at a major disadvantage if the area isn't vacant since anyone can come up and shoot them similar to how it works against a Wanted character.
Stealth inside of buildings is non-existent in this game. Groups of enemies have been tied together and God help you if you walk into an area with multiple floors. Sure, you can get the sneak attack on the first enemy, but you'll wish you ignored them when you see the horde of his friends coming from every corner of the map.

I like Jim -- he is one of the only people who stands up against AAA publishers and has the gall to call them out. However, sometimes he misses the point. I have been playing Fallout since '02 when I first played Fallout 2. I enjoy the take on the game that Bethesda created and all of it's trappings. Running around, exploring the world, shooting SuperMutants, leveling up your toon. Going back to Fallout 3 95% of the game are these activities that some consider mundane. Jim, in his SpiderMan review, stated that leveling up Peter, exploring the world, and swinging around are so much fun to do. Just playing the game makes the character progression system worthwhile. I guess if you are not a fan of a game and how it plays it can effect how seemingly mundane tasks are viewed as not fun.
Picking up bottles might be boring for some, but I've enjoyed the scavenging for resources spin that Bethesda introduced with Fallout 3 and expanded on with the crafting elements of Fallout 4. I am enjoying the game on PC. Most of what I enjoyed about Fallout 4 came from these elements that some would consider mundane, since the story and writing (aside from the terrific companions) were a step backwards. I honestly believe Bethesda missed the mark by omitting NPCs, but to say that all the quests are dog shit is not true.
If you are on the fence about 76 I would hold off for a while until Bethesda makes some changes to the game. The most glaring thing other than the lack of NPCs is the 400lb storage in your settlements which gets maxed fairly quickly. I think they will probably be adding human NPCs in the future in a narrative arc, but Jim is right when he says the game seems a bit empty without them.
